  • Discover the extraordinary capabilities of hagfish, the slime-producing fish that has survived on Earth for over 300 million years.
    --
In 2017, a truck screeched to a halt. One of its containers slid off, hit a car, and spilled its contents- thousands of kilograms of hagfish. The result of this accident was an absolute mess: the highway was coated in a thick slime that took the fire department 7 hours to clear. How did these creatures create this stupendous supply of slime? Noah R. Bressman and Douglas Fudge investigate.
Lesson by Noah R. Bressman and Douglas Fudge, directed by Denys Spolitak.

I feel like more details about the hagfish's four hearts and ability to survive 36 hours of oxygen deprivation would also have been cool details, but I still really enjoyed this video! If people are watching a five-minute video on slimy fish they'll watch a 10 minute one.

The hagfish highway sliming incident occurred outside Depoe Bay on the Oregon coast. As an Oregonian I still remember that day in 2017 when my coworker asked me if I had heard about the massive slime spill. I had never imagined that this would be featured on TED-Ed one day. 😅👍

Not-so-fun-fact: did you know that one of the hagfishes main nutrition comes from whale corpses that sunk to the bottom. They feed on them in a special way, they make a sort of knot with their own body to gain extra leverage to rip out chunks of blubber.
