Staggering. You never hear this because no one can play it! Volodin giving it a Russian blast off right here. Bravo!!

I ve played it for my examination. Yes, it is underrated - a wonderful Masterpiece. The sonata op.11 is heard much more often.

The technical demands of this piece are no greater than any other large-scale work of the period. The Liszt sonata and the Chopin 2nd and 3rd have passages that are much more difficult than anything here. The reason you never hear it is because the verdict seems to be that Schumann was not successful in handling large forms. That's why everyone plays the cycles (Kreisleriana, etc) and not the sonatas. (the Fantasy is a notable exception) It was the same with the symphonies for a long time. That seems to be changing and hopefully the same will happen with the piano sonatas.

Потрясающее исполнение произведения, которое исполняется в принципе редко. Даже и не мечтал, что третью сонату Шумана Алексей играл и играл ТАК! Спасибо! В сокровищницу однозначно - наряду с интерпретацией Горовица.

maybe Schumann just heard Chopin play because this is the most Chopin-like of all Schumann's works. imo he didn't need to compete with anyone even Chopin.

Sounds pretty Schumannesque to me, unless you’re mainly talking about the slow movement, then I can kinda see it.

This is no we’re near Chopin this is as Schumann as it gets

It could all only be Schumann! Though he was, of course, aware of Chopin and much else as well, he was always himself.
On a different note, I wonder how this would sound on a more warmly voiced instrument, such as a Bösendorfer or Blüthner.

    Plot twist:
21:00 It's a screen recording and the player is buffering.
