I think both strength(weight) training and martial arts go together. I focused on martial arts more as a young man. Now I am a little bit older and I see a value in strength as well. Unless you're focused on something special you need to be well rounded and functional.
The smartest ppl have always added strength training they knew it was an advantage that’s why Bruce Lee did it despite the old false advise lifting is bad with old school boxing teachings ,even Foreman was to.d not to lift weights he had to sneak in his own sessions and he was the strongest puncher fir his time when he came back to boxing he incorporated strongman lifting and got even more impressive . My sensai lifted his entire life and competed in his 70”s he was always stronger then the others ( not including myself ) .

Rucking ,farmers carries are also good ... don't need to do tons deadlifts, squats or bench press...i combine punching bag training with heavy farmer carries
Bruce Lee/Steve Reeves/Reg Park/Stallone/Van Damme/Norris and so on We had heroes and role models right up to the early 90s Where are they now, where are those healthy looking heroes we look to inspire us to improve our life
i like to train 2 martial arts sessions for every 1 weightlifting session. If you lift heavy enough, it's not necessary to lift for any body part more than once per week..
Without some kind of strength training when you get old your body starts getting out of balance and losing mass as well. If fact I just got off my Chuck Norris Total Gym (no lie) which I LOVE and here's an interview with the great Richard Norton . All the old karate and kung fu schools had some form weight training
@@curtismitchell2618 I believe it . I'd never thought of getting one, mine was free from a painting client , I thought I'd just use it to mimic paddling a surfboard but next thing I know I'm hooked. Once you get on it you can go from position to position without adjusting the equipment itself . It's got attachments but I've never used them , the core unit is plenty .
When does the full interview come out? This was great! You’ve been an inspiration for me to constantly workout and hike since I subscribed to you, Viking! What method of weight training do you use? I like the Arthur Jones method
Yep back in 1991 I was the only white belt beating up everyone in the dojo in Shotokan Karate in sparring I was 18 and was the only one with a boxing background, I was also the strongest at 155 pounds , when I left ( didn’t really get along with the sensai in that lplace ) I heard they got a speed bag and a nautilus bench press machine to help out . Lifting weights is a must if one wants to actually reach their peak when dine correctly, lifting strengthens bones which will make a stronger punch itself .
You look bigger and better on film when your body is Ripped, then you do if your body is pumped? That is why when you was 170lbs on film you look 200lbs.
I think it should be a last resort option for guys. There are several things you can do to help your natural testosterone levels, simple things any one can do and also some natural supplements like magnesium , zinc, boron and herbs like Ashgawanda can help. Basic things like getting enough sun, staying properly hydrated, getting enough sleep, eating saturated fat in meat all go a long way. Once everything is exhausted and a guy is passed a certain age, it's worth having a talk with his doctor and seeing if it makes sense. I'll personally hold off as long as I can, my natural levels are still fine due to genetics and lifestyle.

I followed Richards career in the 80s and 90s and it was cool seeing his muscles grow in real time. Every film that came out, he was a little bigger.
I dont do martial arts..but I do workout. Id say do both and then do more of anything else you can do. Its healthy. Its good. Do it...

Richard Norton is an Aussie icon👍🏼
What a time that must have been. Men were still allowed to be men and didn't have to be shamed about it.
We are still allowed to bud. No one is stopping us.

There's a guy who reviews fitness equipment here on TH-cam and despite using tons of high-quality kit he loves his total gym.

Push/Pull/Legs is one of my favorite routines 5 days a week. 3 on 1 off, 2 on 1 off.

It's incredible that even today many masters of traditional martial arts are praying that lifting weights it's bad for a martial artist 🤦🏼♂️

What are your thoughts on TRT? Heard it is unsafe in the long run.
