Hi TMRG, that's going to be a great layout when you have it's fully scenic, nice work. Glad you found the fix for the voltage drop, what I would add, if you have not already done it, is to wire EVERY piece of track that you want to use for Live Steam.... forget relying on ANY fishplate joiner. I would also say you can improve the 'Driving' experience, by buying and building a OO Live Steam Club 'Live Drive' controller, as these give you 'Instant' response control. You seem a competent modeller, so making the kit would be easy for you. Enjoy the Live Steam fun. it's addictive ! Joe
Hi there, this video is a few years old now and the layout is actually fully complete from a scenic point of view. The layout does already have dropper wires on. each section as I use DCC when running normal locomotives. The controller is definitely something I've looked at in the past. Maybe now that the layout is finished it's something I'll have time for in the future. Thanks for watching 😃

I so glad you have made a live steam video. They are such a different way of running a model railway. You have to be a mini steam engine engineer. I have just serviced my own live steam Mallard and it was a bit scary taking it apart for the first time but i learnt a lot in the process. And for your next challenge try stopping it at the station .

I have a Live Steam Mallard and Seagull. I was a bit disappointed, as I wanted the Live Steam Papyrus insteal of a second A4 but they are gorgeous locomotive models. Makes me happy to see this!

Very nice video, well done! It would be nice to get more of the sound of the locomotive. An action cam with a decent microphone on a platform car coupled to the steamer would be a nice thing to see this steam action in close up. Great video.I have 2 A4 live steam loco,s.Run them on a large circular layout in loft.I had just one feed for the whole of the circle.I also had a lift up section with just one feed to the lift up bit.Fine on DC but on the live steam as it came off the lift up bit it suddenly went into reverse.Put another feed on the other end of the lift up section and everthing is fine.Just goe,s to show that the smallest break in the power supply will cause chaos Jim

Hi there! As others have mentioned already this isn't a smoke generator, it's an actual working miniature steam locomotive so adding glycerine would probably damage the internals. Even tap water can be damaging in the long run so these live steam locos are pretty delicate. Thanks for watching 😃

And I suppose you would need to keep it clean to keep running and at that scale, deposits are going to occur exponentially with tap water, even de mineralised I would avoid. Mind you, I think a pure mix wouldn't cause harm as it all evaporates off at low temperatures. Might be an issue building a head of steam , or than again it might work better at scale. You do have to account for the scale of it all as things change by powers of when scaling down and physics changes a lot. Be interesting to try with one of the simple steam engine designs around and see it it all worked.
Great video. :) Just a question. have you tried rail joiners for the joints to help alignment?? Also, a good thing to have with a modular system is a good electrical system that has decent connections between modules if you already haven't ::D
Hey Geoff, I use rail joiners/fishplates for all the other track joints but over the baseboards joints it's not feasible as they would get damaged too easily. I've shown the the wiring system in more detail in some of my layout build videos as well if you're interested. Thanks for watching 😃

i love my Hornby live steam Mallard. wish hornby would put out a new free manual for all hornby live steamers to show how to get to the input working voltage switch inside the transformer so americans would know how to get to the said switch and flip said switch so americans would not have trouble running their live steam locos from the get go
I believe if you contact the Hornby Customer Service department they still offer help and support with these locos, despite them being discontinued for well over a decade now. Thanks for watching 👍

Bet you're glad you got that sorted and the Mallard finally running. The Mallard is both my wife's and mine favourite train. My main concern is whether it would manage 1st radius curves. My Hogwarts Express is similar; 4-6-0 with tender and manages them ok. Do you have any 1st Radius curves on your circuit ??
Hi Richard, I can't speak for the normal A4 Mallard model but certainly for the live steam version Hornby recommend 3rd Radius as the minimum and that's what they supply in the set. I'm inclined to agree with them on this one, the live steam engines are tricky to control and if they go round a bend at any kind of speed they are likely to come off. It's happened to me multiple times so I wouldn't want to try it on 1st Radius personally. Hope that helps 😃

Hey Nick, it will run at a crawl just not with a set of coaches on the back combined with gradient in the room. After all these years the timing probably could be adjusted slightly but it’s not something I want to risk making worse considering it currently runs well enough for my purposes anyway. Since you use some cardboard buildings on this layout, I'd like to hear about your experience with Live Steam and cardboard. I have some Hornby Live Steam models. On my older layout which I built before getting into Live Steam, I had a lot of cardboard buildings. But when I started building my Live Steam layout, I decided not to use any cardboard there - at least not to close to the rails - since I was afraid the steam might damage the cardboard. So I'd like to know whether you had any problems with that.
Hey there, to be honest the cardboard buildings were just temporarily on the layout to make it look more interesting for filming. That said I didn't have any problems as the steam from the loco is quite wispy. The Metcalfe road bridge is a permanent fixture and the steam hasn't caused this to warp at all, though I try not to stop it directly under the bridge or in the tunnel. Really the only time the loco ejects large bursts of steam and water is when you're first getting it going, which I try to do in the fiddle yard anyway. If you really wanted to play it safe though I suppose what you could do is give your cardboard buildings a coat of matt spray varnish after building them. That would probably protect them from the worst of the steam but generally I don't find it to be too much of an issue. Great question though, thanks for watching 😃

Hi Vyasa, the Hornby Live Steam sets haven't been made for quite a while now. I think they ended production in 2012 so they're collectors items that aren't readily available anymore. That said you could check out eBay as there always seems to be a few on there but obviously the prices can vary somewhat. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Also, try using a glycerine/glycol mix for more steam . Vape juice basically. Would be more of a show

very nice! id recomend you turn of the lights and watch the front bogey to make sure it isn't arcing between the wheels and cylinders

@@alexsrailway5420 also it only happens on the right hand or starboard side of the loco as the chassis is polarised to the left or Port side rail.
Bet you're glad you got that sorted and the Mallard finally running. The Mallard is both my wife's and mine favourite train. My main concern is whether it would manage 1st radius curves. My Hogwarts Express is similar; 4-6-0 with tender and manages them ok. Do you have any 1st Radius curves on your circuit ??
Hi Richard, I can't speak for the normal A4 Mallard model but certainly for the live steam version Hornby recommend 3rd Radius as the minimum and that's what they supply in the set. I'm inclined to agree with them on this one, the live steam engines are tricky to control and if they go round a bend at any kind of speed they are likely to come off. It's happened to me multiple times so I wouldn't want to try it on 1st Radius personally. Hope that helps 😃
to wire the Modular railway ive use a ribbon connector or a db9 or brakeout pcb and a short cable
Hey Kieran, yeah that's a great way to do it if you have lots of wires to cross between boards. For me it's just the two power cables so I'm able to get away with something a bit more simple. Thanks for watching 😃
You should also be able to run it at a crawl. If not the forward timing needs tuning to get the best out of the loco.
Hey Nick, it will run at a crawl just not with a set of coaches on the back combined with gradient in the room. After all these years the timing probably could be adjusted slightly but it’s not something I want to risk making worse considering it currently runs well enough for my purposes anyway. Since you use some cardboard buildings on this layout, I'd like to hear about your experience with Live Steam and cardboard. I have some Hornby Live Steam models. On my older layout which I built before getting into Live Steam, I had a lot of cardboard buildings. But when I started building my Live Steam layout, I decided not to use any cardboard there - at least not to close to the rails - since I was afraid the steam might damage the cardboard. So I'd like to know whether you had any problems with that.
Hey there, to be honest the cardboard buildings were just temporarily on the layout to make it look more interesting for filming. That said I didn't have any problems as the steam from the loco is quite wispy. The Metcalfe road bridge is a permanent fixture and the steam hasn't caused this to warp at all, though I try not to stop it directly under the bridge or in the tunnel. Really the only time the loco ejects large bursts of steam and water is when you're first getting it going, which I try to do in the fiddle yard anyway.
If you really wanted to play it safe though I suppose what you could do is give your cardboard buildings a coat of matt spray varnish after building them. That would probably protect them from the worst of the steam but generally I don't find it to be too much of an issue. Great question though, thanks for watching 😃

Hi Vyasa, the Hornby Live Steam sets haven't been made for quite a while now. I think they ended production in 2012 so they're collectors items that aren't readily available anymore. That said you could check out eBay as there always seems to be a few on there but obviously the prices can vary somewhat. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
