Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet Hope 'Ammonite' Will Normalize LGBTQ Love Stories

- In "Ammonite" the Kate Winslet plays Mary Anning, real life fossil collector and palaeontologist who was overlooked for her contributions to history. Meanwhile Saoirse Ronan portrays Charlotte, a wealthy younger woman grieving over having lost a baby. After Charlotte’s thoughtless husband, Roderick (James McArdle), pays the penniless Mary to watch over Charlotte while he goes abroad, a grudging Mary and the mourning Charlotte fall in love on the rocky, windswept coastline as they hunt for fossils.
Winslet noted that the relationship is never discussed in the movie between the characters, much less as a same-sex one. “It just is,” she said at Variety's Virtual studio at the Toronto International Film Festival, presented by Canada Goose. “And so for me, the fact that this story is just about two people who fall in love was quite exceptional.”
“It made me feel that surely, by telling this story in that way, we were in some way contributing to the way that LGBTQ films are interpreted on film, and normalized - without hesitation, without fear,” Winslet continued. “And it was such a joyful experience for me to play a character like that.”

Irony is that if Saoirse would be nominated in Oscars for 5th time, she will be breaking Kate s record for being the youngest to have 5 nominations. Rooting for both to have Oscar nods for Ammonite.

I'm just grateful this movie didn't end with one of the characters dying, since most iconic GLBTQ films tend to use death as happy endings, which totally defeat the purpose.

If you want to see a powerful gaze watch portrait of a lady on fire. A movie from a 19th century painter who has a romantic relationship with her subject, both women. The OG, and one of the best movies I’ve ever watched in every sense, aesthetics, sound, script, direction. Freaking masterpiece.

I love this movie, once I saw it, it became one of my all time favorites. So naturally beautiful and real.
I’m so glad to see Kate nodding on everything that Saoirse has to say in the end. On most interviews, when other people talks, She just normally listens diligently with no reactions at all.

Mary Anning was one of the first paleontologists and found incredible specimens. It's impossible to confirm that she was a lesbian, but it seems probable. But either way, her being a lesbian is not what's important about her. I wish they had focused on her scientific achievements instead of her sexuality. She is important for so much more than sex.

Older kate winslet kind of looks like Saorse Ronan ( facial features) but younger kate winslet doesn't look like Saorse Ronan ( I would say she was more beautiful )
I noticed that as saoirse ages, she gets more beautiful (i didnt think she's beautiful then as someone comments , shes weird looking hahah) whereas thats the opposite for kate....

This was a real person who made significant contributions, hence this kind of fictional narrative without a shred of evidence just reeks of exploitation to me for the sake of winning awards...not 'art' in any sense.

Yes it has lots of emotional inaccuracies. I love Kate Winslet but she played this part very well up until ssaoirse Ronan left in the carriage. Then she made bad acting choices that spoiled the film. Saorse Then came alive at that point with her acting. We did not like Mary by the end and just wanted her to go home. Played dead pan, no emotion. Plus my lesbian partner and I felt there was not enough dialogue in order to develop the characters relationship further through the whole middle part we just didn't really believe these two REALLY loved each other. Due to lack of dialogue we felt that it contributed to the two characters not being fully explored. It was too slow and boring tbh

Just rented the movie and unfortunately I didn’t like it at all. A good period LGBT love story is Portrait of a Woman on Fire. Ammoinite was slow and boring than all of sudden they’re all over each other. Not a fan, sorry Kate and Saoirse, you are both great actresses this was not the role for either of you.
