You put the stylus in opposite the number you want and push all the way down. The red numbers are for subtraction and you move the stylus all the way up.

Ooh, I was waiting for you to put in a number ending in 999999 and showing how all wheels roll over at the same time... Was really curious if that would be as smooth as the reset lever or if it would require considerable additional force.

Ah sorry! I have done that though and the amount of effort required is the same as if you're just turning one, I think the springs inside are doing a lot of work and all release at the same time, but it's no extra effort. This has to be my favourite car boot sale purchase...£4!

I wonder how it looks inside. It could be as simple as some gears and springs, where the 0 lets the spring move the next gear.
Since it "only" goes to the mil position I could see this being used in smaller accounting firms / departments. I bet somebody who has used them for a few years could be quite fast at using them.

I did try and get it open, but the plastic is really brittle and I didn't want to completely destroy it. Yes it's just a simple spring loaded gear I think, the same way an odometer works. The link in the description shows the guy opening it up.. Hey maybe if the accountancy firm went over a million, they could buy another!

@@weirdoldtech Yeah the plastic probably degraded on a chamical basis over the years.
Iirc an odometer work by adjusting the gear ratio by ten and the numbers are turning continuously.
I have to wonder if this was just more cost effective when it came out.

Very interesting. I wonder what utility this actually had. Adding 2 numbers is rather simple, at least it should be for an accountant 😅 Maybe it was for running tallies? Either way, its a cool piece of tech, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comment! I really wasn't sure if people would be interested in this or not, so your comment has made my day! Yes, I'm not sure how much these things were used but it's very satisfying to operate and reset, so for that alone every home should have one!
