    I had a 1968 Yamaha 200 in about the late 70s.It was fast but kept fouling plugs.Dad was going to help I was eager to ride at 16 I could ride any displacement.The Yamaha shop failed.Dad said sell it to me.i didn't realize he wanted me off that 2 stroke it was only 200cc bud would do 95 mph with 2 of us and I had no idea he already had a coil he fixed it in a few minutes.

    Absolute gold. So many incomplete coil resistance videos with endless fluff wasting time....this is the goat. Nice job!

    2003 Arctic Cat Pantera 550. Set at 20k my fluke is reading 18.05 ohms between the plug wires. Bad coil?

      On the 20K setting on your meter, this would likely mean 18k ohms. That is reasonable for the secondary of the coil, if a little high. Not necessarily bad. I would check your service manual for exact testing specs for your coil.

    best testing video ever..others dont explain or dont show the switching of wires and settings

    You know your videos are absolutely amazing but you never show/explain what it would be like of something went bad in your videos. It would be really really really fucking helpful if you also stated what stuff does when it goes bad would be awesome

    some sparkplug caps have their own built-in resistor.

    the problem with that test is this you measuing a copper wire i maesure the same whither its wound in a coil or stretched outit does not tell any ting about shorted turns of the coili have seen coils with a hole burned in still woriking some but meter will tell you this only good test for any one if in dought change it out , coils and condencers usually condenser (capisitors ) are the first to go the effect your spark more than the coils ---------im 88 i have seen a few-------- lol

    Great video , I've found over the years that the best way to test coils in while they are in circuit and under stress. Manufactures want you to test the resistance of coils while not taking into account that a coil can simply be weak and still firing but just not to its full potential . I've seen coils "ohm out" but then when looked at more closely using an Oscilloscope and ignition pick up probe it was not able to fire at high enough Kv to jump the gap while under load in the cylinder .
    Ohm meter testing is ok if the coil is just simply fried but if you have winding that are shorted to its self effectively allowing the current to bypass some or most of the winding it will diminish its Kv rating but still test within that broad range that OEs give you .
    But I agree your way will catch the majority of failures as most the time the coil just simply fails completely but I've just seen to many cases of "in range failures " to completely trust a resistance test

    Just ordered todays 4 stick coils ,stator ,and rectifier for 09 yamaha fz1 from rm …you keep saying check website for specs but only specs I see on the coil page are length diameter etc…nothing about resistance ….is there a spec page separate from the part{coil} itself ?

    This is the one that answered my question. Everyones testing dual packs the same way as single and i couldnt get a reading. This is why you need to test between the plugs on dual packs. Many thanks 🙏🏼

    I check my dual plug boat coil and started on 200 on primary and it was .3 which was good I reset meter to 20k and got 6.43 does this mean my coil is good ??

    When testing a dual spark coil it reads 0 ohms, does that mean the coil is bad?

    Can a person buy a coil based on the resistance they need? Vintage snowmobile parts are obsolete and the universal ones I can get have too much resistance!

    • @Rmstatorinc
      @Rmstatorinc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are positive the physical size of the coil will fit your stator plate, then you can buy it based on resistance. It's hard to be sure it will fit fine without confirming measurements.

      RMSTATOR it’s the external ignition coils like the blue one in the video. Who can I contact? I tried calling the 800 number on your website but didn’t have luck, more customer service than tech support. Vintage stuff is always nice and roomy and easy to work on/modify =)

    But what do you set your multimeter to? All these videos are helpful I get it than kn s but please make it complete by telling me what to set the multimeter at. You can say set it for resistance ok but show me you have it right in front of you, you're already doing it but leaving g that part out as is all the other video's I've seen. Not to down you, hell no I learned big time from watching your videos I humbly ask that in the future consider the thought for those of us who are not mechanically trained.

    The single wore coil does this have to be grounded

    • @Rmstatorinc
      @Rmstatorinc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A single wire ignition coil is generally grounded through the mounting bolt to the frame.
