Hey Tom, Longtime listener, first-time caller. Home Skoolin' makes me feel like the kid from "The Ballad of Curtis Loew." True, you're not quite the wizened dobro player of my imagination, but beggars can't be choosers in these trying times. Speaking of Skynyrd, in an early video you offered Steve Gaines as the most underrated guitar player in rock and roll, and that's a great shout, but for my money, it's Paul Kossoff; dude had a savage vibrato and guitar face that puts yours to shame. Anyway, these videos have helped me push past a long, frustrating plateau in my own playing. Turns out mindset is everything! Thanks.
I'm working my way through your videos. I'm back on HS 12 at this time. Two things: 1. Tulsa Native so I dig the shout outs to The Guitar House. 2. After 40+ years, with an axe in my hands every day, I hit a wall. I stopped wanting to play months ago. Wasn't feeling it. You sir have single-handedly rekindled my desire. I got out the guitar for the first time since an outdoor gig 6 weeks ago. Plugged in and the ground wire on the input jack came loose. I'm still going to play damn it as soon as I can find my soldering iron. Anyway, thanks for pulling me out of my funk. -Mike
Hey Tom, I've been playing lead guitar in a folk/bluegrass group for a while now and just found my way in to being the rhythm (and only) guitarist in a 10-piece brass band, along with bass+drums keepin' the beat. G*d damn is rhythm hard. I've been very humbled. I've learned that keeping the time on "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" by the Blues Brothers without making a mistake is nothing short of a miracle. TB inspired progression: Bm7 (7th fret) | Dm7 (10th fret) | Fm7 (13th fret) - (diminished sound) | F#7 b2/C# in the bass (9th fret) - the b2 is the G on the 8th fret/2nd string - this last chord is a C7 shape with C# in the bass. Direct TB influence on that last chord. Appreciate the learnin' Doctor!

Hey Tom, holy shit man...that was something special! What blows me away is not your flipping awesome soloing, but the mesmerizing chord sequences, and then you segway into something like another key and sequence. How do u develop those chord sequences. , writing tunes I get stuck in a cool 3 or 4 chord loop and trying any other sequence or Segway just is like banging your head against a cheesy door trying to find something that compliments. I'm still playing catch up on the vids, randomly watching ones I haven't seen. This was a favorite by far because it illustrates an important truth about contemporary guitar playing. I'm 55 and have been playing for 40+ years. On a good day I can solo pretty well over about any progression (within reason). Where I am lacking is CHORD KNOWLEDGE. Spent so many of my formative years learning the riffs and licks and feel but I neglected an expansive CHORD KNOWLEDGE. So, if you're young(er) and learning guitar , take it from this old geezer and be like Tom. Study the chords! Once you learn that, the places you can go, making music with your guitar will be endless. Did you notice how he grabbed those complex versions of chords without even looking? You don't learn that by just copying an artist's riffs and licks all the time. Thanks for teaching REAL guitar, Uncle Larry!

Tom! Tommy!! Uncle Larry!!! You is so endlessly clever with them chord voicings, innit? I've been using lockdown to really expand my knowledge chords. Then you come along and it's like someone has opened a jar of caviare after I've pigged out on fish fingers. You just wipe that big fat greasy smile off my face (in a good way). It's a bitter-sweet moment of realization that I'm just scratching the surface.
Thanks as always! The way you describe listening and playing like a producer makes so much sense to me. I am a writer, singer, and guitarist in that order. I'm watching in part because I would like to be a better guitarist, but the way you described that mindset is the way I have always felt. I am almost compusively thinking about the audience experience, worrying they are getting bored, overwhelmed, or getting some other bad taste in their mouth and working to prevent that. If I get too far in my own head it's bad, but I think it has made me a better writer and performer.
Everytime I pull out my pedal steel I'm reminded of how much work you have to put in to keep it up. Very same thing happens when I plug in my wah. It is definitely a skill that has to be maintained.

The way you describe listening and playing like a producer makes so much sense to me. I am a writer, singer, and guitarist in that order. I'm watching in part because I would like to be a better guitarist, but the way you described that mindset is the way I have always felt. I am almost compusively thinking about the audience experience, worrying they are getting bored, overwhelmed, or getting some other bad taste in their mouth and working to prevent that. If I get too far in my own head it's bad, but I think it has made me a better writer and performer.

Everytime I pull out my pedal steel I'm reminded of how much work you have to put in to keep it up. Very same thing happens when I plug in my wah. It is definitely a skill that has to be maintained.
