FELONY & FAITH | Damon West’s Road to RECOVERY

  • This week's show is quite possibly the most incredible story I’ve ever heard. You are going to be riveted and you will never forget this conversation!
13 years ago to the day that we recorded this interview, my guest was sentenced to life in prison! Yes, life in prison for my guest Damon West.
Damon’s story will make you uncomfortable at times. But ultimately, his story is all about OVERCOMING EXTREME ADVERSITY, TRANSFORMATION, and REDEMPTION.
Do you want to learn how to turn your life around? This interview Is a master class!
At 20, Damon was the starting quarterback at the University of North Texas when he suffered a career-ending injury. A few years later while training to be a stockbroker, Damon got hooked on methamphetamines, and he became the mastermind of a burglary ring to support his addiction.
Eventually, he was arrested and sentenced to 65 years in a Texas maximum security prison.
In prison, Damon got SOBER, went through a SPIRITUAL AWAKENING, and started down his true life’s calling which he continued to build on after his parole more than 7 years later.
Today he is a much sought-after speaker and best-selling author including co-writing “The Coffee Bean: A Simple Lesson to Create Positive Change.” with JON GORDON.
Damon pulls no punches in a series of brutally HONEST stories when sharing his life and the mistakes he’s made.
You’ll hear first-hand exactly what it feels like to be found guilty of major crimes, how he fought to survive and eventually THRIVE in prison, and how Damon turned his time in prison into an OPPORTUNITY.
Be sure to listen to how he used the analogy of being like a COFFEE BEAN (yes, a coffee bean) as a critical part in changing his victim mindset to one of HOPE and redemption.
In one of my favorite parts of this episode, Damon reveals his thoughts about GRATITUDE, his mission to HELP OTHERS, and why RESILIENCE is essential to living your best life.
This week, pay attention to a man who has lived life on the edge in many ways, good and bad.
Damon’s past and present are filled with LESSONS that will make you STOP, THINK, and help you FIGURE OUT how you can lead a better life, too.

Remarkable person reading this.. It’s going to get better; all it is a season of opportunity to grow and be better than before. Challenging times are meant to strengthen us, not to break us. Success doesn’t define to what happened to us; it is how we choose to deal with our circumstances. The more you grow and develop as an incredible person as you are, the more things will change for the better. Forgive more (for you), be grateful for even the smallest things (we have it way better than someone else), choose love over ego, choose humility over ego (humility is strength), and finally, invest into new skills so that your future self will thank you. Our lives will change forever the more we grow. Be thankful for the challenges for we know something greater is coming. Love you always - Nathalie ✨❤️

Wow each week gets better and better. A true must listen with Damon West, absolute🔥🔥🔥. Fear is A liar, fear is not real, fear is perceived, while danger is real and Has to be respected but fear is not real and don’t give into it. You don’t have to win all your fights but you have to fight all your fights and when you lose, you have to make sure you get up. Imagine life is like a pot of boiling water. Anything we put in this pot of boiling water it’s gonna be changed by the pressure and the heat of the boiling water. I’m going to put 3 things in the pot of boiling water and watch how they change. a carrot, an egg, and a coffee bean. If I put a carrot in the boiling water it It goes from being hard and turns soft. If I put an egg in the boiling water it goes from being soft and turns hard. The egg symbolizes your heart if your heart hardens you’re unable to give and Receive love. But if I put a coffee bean in the water it keeps its form and changes the water because it’s power comes from within. Go out there and be a coffee bean. If you ever shut yourself off from people because of differences, You’re going to miss some of the biggest lessons and the best friendships in your life. The other side of your fear is the best version of you. The things that you’re most ashamed of does not disqualify you it actually qualifies you to help someone else. To be the best version of yourself you have to look to your higher power and it needs to be spiritual. Adversity is never as bad as you think it’s gonna be And I’m always way more capable of achieving things than I think I am. Learn to speak the language that the person in front of you speaks. Look at your adversity as an opportunity. Be receptive to the messengers that God puts in front of us. Be unselfish, honest, pure, & loving. I’m going to stop there and I encourage you to listen to the rest because it’s truly amazing. Much Love and Aloha. #EdMylett #MaxOut #KVibe808 #PACmentality

Man the emotion and depth of the lessons here is intense! What a story and a life Damon has crafted after what some would have considered over once getting handed that 65 year sentence!
Today marks 3 years of zero alcohol for me! The fact that this podcast with this message was delivered to me on this date is unreal to me! That is not by chance, God’s plan is being exercised precisely as he has intended it to be 🙏
A favorite quote I took from Damon today is:
“An addict will give up their goals to meet their behavior!
A winner gives up their habits to meet their goals!!
I was once an addict that almost lost everything, and I gave it #OneMore and haven’t looked back! All of these messages and stories that I once thought disqualified me to make an impact, have now been shared, and I see and believe they are wht actually qualifies me to IMPACT lives and change the trajectory for many other people in the world!
    Powerful stuff!!!
God Bless you Damon and Ed 🙏❤️

This was a great conversation. I struggled with substance abuse, but I refuse to put myself or anyone else the box of an Addict-alcoholic There's a fundamental issue with identifying ourselves that way. It's damaging to self and others to identify by a thoughts, behavior or belief. Imagine if we were ALL identified by our flaws? It says we are the worst part of us and that's what we'll always be. I'm not who I or others say I am. I am who God says I am. Beautifully created to be uniquely me. My negative patterns were ways I adopted to navigate thru pain of past as I was unable to live in the present.

Wow! Just the message I needed to hear today. I have never been to jail or prison, never did drugs, not an alcoholic and not a perfect person either but I would say the entire message was for me. I couldn't stop listening. God always knows how to speak expressly to his children and He spoke to me clearly today. God is interested turning my mess to become my purpose. "I cannot control the world around me but can control the world within me. We have to die to self to become useful and not use-less".
Thanks brother Ed and blessings to you for this opportunity 🙏🙏

Ed, to a degree we all have a fear of change. However I truly believe that at a certain point the scales tilt the other way for all humans but especially addicts. "After a while the fear of staying the same becomes way more daunting than the fear of change"

This is one of the most touching, inspiring and spirituality profound conversations I’ve ever listened to. I told my young sons about Damon and his story in the car this morning on the way to their outdoor school. Last week I finally surrendered my life to God and felt the Holy Spirit fill my heart. I’m not religious and don’t go to church but I felt Jesus in my heart. Damon and Ed both inspire me to continue surrendering daily and seek ways to allow god to work through me. You guys are human beings at their best. Thank you so much.

When you are called, you are called. I am so energized by your story. Wishing you all the best, and those boys are blessed to have you guiding them and growing with them! Ed, Thank you. I seriously believe this is the most important podcast you've ever done. I've been motivated/inspired by a podcast before, but I'd never been spiritually moved by a podcast until now. I felt emotion in my HEART. I've been searching for God recently, and I seriously felt a presence while listening to this.
(Backstory) I recently turned off automatic downloads for every podcast show on my phone because of storage. Somehow your show was the only one that didn't, therefore this episode popped up while i was on a run. I was in the process of deleting the download, when i stopped & gave it a listen because you described it as the "most incredible story" you'd ever heard. Thank you for that. This has moved me beyond measure. God works in mysterious ways.

As always, I am looking forward to listening to this super special energetic interview!
I love how people change their lives around completely and take responsibility for their actions. Honestly, it sounds like his sentence was way over any logical expectation especially because he didn't hurt people physically (beyond stealing their security and physical things.
I had my house broken into twice which was traumatic but certainly I wouldn't think the robbers should get 65 years in prison! ) What his Mom said was so moving and definitely directly from G-d! There are defining moments that change who we are for good and for bad. He got introduced to adult behavior at a very young age which influenced his choices. He made some very bad choices in his life at a young age, but they didn't define who he was as a person. In prison, he was committed to his mother's advice of not joining a gang (and no tatoos) which saved him. Not to mention Mr. Jackson who was his guardian angel who gave him the most wise advice ever which actually saved him(prison is like a boiling pot and you can choose if to become a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean.)Damon West definitely chose to be the coffee bean. I have goose bumps listening to this. Everyone has to listen to this metaphor! His cellmate was also a guardian angel."Prison is an opportunity not a punishment." "I'm riding with G-d!" His spiritual awakening happened thanks to being in jail-his old self died so the best version of himself could come alive #MAXOUT from Israel

This man is so inspirational. The way he holds himself accountable and continues to make his sobriety a priority. It’s very dope. I hope anyone who is an addict can learn something. Blessing on your journey Damon

This year for me has been so hard and I always know if I press play and watch your show Ed that I will be encouraged and this episode did not disappoint. It was in God’s timing and I’m thankful for you both for sharing your life experiences to encourage others. Oh and I kept thinking the whole time during the interview that this needs to be a movie! I can’t wait to see it!

Wow, wow, wow! I always learn from every interview and this one with Damon West blew me away!!!! So much great stuff and the coffee bean is the perfect analogy for the new organization God has placed on my heart to create. I am the coffee bean and I have the ability to change the world just like both of you amazing men!!! Thank you Ed and Damon…serving is what I was made to do and you have affirmed that for me. 🥰

❤️Great story / testimony … God orchestrates things better than we could ever imagine. His mother was led by the Holy Spirit and had great wisdom in her advice to him after he was sentenced…. Ed’s dad’s sponsor & Mr. Jackson were divine appointments…
And I also like the swat team analogy that they rescued him.

I know one day God will bless me with an opportunity to share my story!! More than 10 years ago I walked away from my Meth addiction. I am told all the time I need to write a book on my experiences. I have some similar experiences to Damon, but I differ from not being involved in AA/NA I walked away from it. I agree with taking one day at a time, however, I am no longer an addict, God took that from me, so I don't agree for myself to continue to hold to that identity of being an addict. My name is Rebekah and I am a child of God!!! So I find the community and support from family and friends. So I have a different perspective than Damon when it comes to my path of recovery, but his testimony was beautiful and very motivational!! The most amazing thing is we all have our story and should share it because we never know who it will impact and help. Thank you Ed for the work you do by bringing us these amazing podcasts!! You are a blessing to myself and many others!

Ed, this interview was just so incredible and packed full of food for thought, especially the coffee bean illustration and the amazing breakdown of the Serenity Prayer. Since I discovered your channel through Lewis Howes School of Greatness, I have been blown away by the quality of your guests and your amazingly warm interview style. You have an insane skill of squeezing out of your guests absolute priceless strategies and thoughts. It's one hours treadmill workout that has become an insane habit for me each morning, plugging in my bluetooth earphones and listening to your show on Spotify. I'm so grateful for your ministry and just think you are one of the nicest, kindest and most genuine interviewers I have ever listened to. God Bless you my brother and MAX OUT!!

I was in prison for 3 years and gave my life to Christ. I found this man’s book and read his entire story and it gave me so much hope and motivation. I finally came home in 2021 and God has walked with me every step of the way but I’ve always kept this story with me. I have my own house, my job, my own cars, my relationship with my 7 year old daughter couldn’t be better and now expecting another(: Thank you God and thank you Damon.

This is probably one of the top five most inspiring TH-cam videos or interviews that I have watched and/or listened to. I do home health, so I have lots of opportunities in my car to listen to great interviews and books so this is saying a lot! I've listened to a lot of inspirational talks. My son is an addict in recovery. I'm going to pray to manifest a meeting between Ed, Damon and my son, Erik.🙏 Thank you for doing this and for sharing your story.❤
