    You see a man like Snake Plissken, you know his life (not all of it) has been horror and chaos. That changes a person profoundly. He's quiet but intense. He is stoic but unforgivingly blunt. And he's also relentless. There's a reason he is like that.

    I think the post-Viet Nam/Watergate zeitgeist heavily influenced this film as well. Snake being a soldier who no longer believes in the system...the depiction of the president as someone motivated by self interest rather than serving the public.

    Also in the final shot in the video where Plisken walks away from the air force base you can see the US flag reversed and upside down in the puddles reflection, this must have been on purpose and shows that the film actually had some thought put into it's mis en scene rather than just being a generic bland action flick

    And Lead paint, don't forget the lead in paint and the air of poor neighborhoods. Many environmental factors than were part of the increase of violent crime. Aside the war on the poor, aka on drugs, terror, etc.

      There is strong correlational between removing lead from gasoline (and by extension car exhaust and urban air quality) and the reduction of violent crimes.

    6:45 The reason why Plissken became a criminal is explained in prequel comics where it is revealed that Snake's family were killed in the middle of a operation carried by the military when he was still in the special forces and that's why he come to hate the political system and the police and military force by equal

  • @retrosquadchannel2.050
    @retrosquadchannel2.050 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    IN novel "Escape from New York" it was plainly said, that Snake Plissken left army after operation in covertop Leningrad, ended in slaughter of his unit. Job was to infiltrate city and retrieve intelligence officer, but in fact that was a total lie. That officer was to give russians misleading data, but all was in vain - those russians were too smart to buy it.
    Also in novel it is said, that WWIII is waged, but chemical weapons are used.
    Why Plissken was breaking the law? It all began after his service. He returned home and learnt that his home with his parents was burnt by police. Some psychos took his parents as hostages, and police had no intention to save people - they sent for flamethrower. After purge Snake's parents were declared psychos themselves and all their money was taken by government as colaterial damage.
    Also it was explained that new police officers were former military, but during the war their minds became twisted.

      Yes, the metal gear solid creator, Hideo Kojima was made to watch one new movie every day and he loved Escape from New York and Solid Snake as a result is heavily inspired by him. In Metal Gear Solid 2, Solid Snake takes the code name "Plissken" as a reference.

    Regarding Plisken's past and his crimes, on the SE DVD I have, they include bonus material of the heist that Plisken was involved in which gets him arrested. It was cut from the final film, and for good reason, it was just not necessary. However, it does add some insight into Snake Plisken's situation at the beginning of the movie.
    Also, Plisken having an eyepatch... I guess that makes him a 'One-Eyed Snake'?

    • @asylumwhispers9964
      @asylumwhispers9964 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Strongblade 69 If you listen to the commentary, Carpenter states he cut the scene due to not wanting to give Snake too much humanity. I thought it was a good scene if just to show why he just doesn't care anymore due to the last person he had any type of feelings for died in front of him. He technically has not loose his eye, just the use of it. It still gives him pain on occasion.

      Yes, the problem is largely as no-one ever lowers sentencing. Reaction to the drug crisis in the 80's was more sentencing, then was the three strikes and mandatory sentencing etc, but at the same time no-one has had the balls to say If we raise THIS, then lets at least lower THAT or we end up with 2 million prisoners...
