    Talk about a light bulb moment! I’ve spent days looking for the “chimney” component for my DIY lamps and never thought of a lightbulb . You’re the man !!❤️

    It's a pretty lamp! how long does that alcohol last? I think I will try with k1 kerosene instead of alcohol,since it's $11 gallon where I live in North NJ USA.Alcohol very expensive here.
    The lamp wick is perfect for kerosene but won't work with olive oil.i have tried many times to experiment,but maybe a 100% cotton wick from a mop would work with used oil. For those of you that can't afford alcohol or kerosene.
    People throw lamps away all the time,you can take those apart instead of buying parts.

      Lamp oil is much safer than using rubbing alcohol in this design anyways!

    Muy bueno! La parte mas dificil es la del vidrio de la lampara es muy fino y delicado , hay que tener paciencia y delicadeza, ( usar guantes) para la terminacion del agujero, lo mismo, gracias.

    and, if your name is Angus Macgyver, you would save the filament wires to be able to pick the lock on your cage. LoL. this is a great way to repurpose/reuse light bulbs. Like another writer stated, use a dremel tool to help make the hole so you can make a neater and smoother hole.

  • @jupiterfive1331
    @jupiterfive1331 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Instead of using the sandpaper to that degree you could use a dremel with the appropriate stone attached to widen the hole as soon as it becomes a dot, or use the dremel from the beginning, in this way there isn't a large area of sanded glass that looks cloudy at the top around the hole and detracts from the appearance, also it can make a nice smooth rounded hole.

      Very unlikely - An incandescent lamp is designed with glass that's engineered to tolerate the high temperature of the tungsten filament glowing white hot.

    Very genius idea. Excellent.
    Just two concerns. 1. How does one stop the wick from burning? Quenching the flame. 2. The globe would logically become too hot to touch.
    I've got boxes of burned bulbs and plenty of glass jars. Guess I have my work cut out for me.

    Also, how much burning time does the lantern lamp have? Is alcohol the only accelerant that can be used?

    • @fixitsamo
      @fixitsamo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used alcohol because its the cleanest the quantity that i used lasted around 3hrs usually a 60 Watt light bulb could generate a lot of heat
      100 or 120 watt light bulb could resist even more high temperature

    First of all I like your idea of making a lamp out of an old light bulb and the result is very pretty and functional. Well done at that part.
    BUT there is a HUGE SAFETY ISSUE WITH USING RUBBING ALCOHOL (99% Isopropanol aka IPA 99.9%) Please do not suggest to use rubbing alcohol in this design to your viewers.
    Rubbing alcohol is pretty dangerous to use in such a lamp. Because isopropyl alcohol is considered a highly flammable liquid.
    It has a flash point of 53°F, which means it can catch fire very easily and ignite at a relatively low temperature. It will burn even without a wick and the alcohol vapors could also explode in your lower glas reservoir.
    A MUCH SAFER alternative would be to use a very clean LAMP OIL because it has a much safer flash point *(usually flash point of lamp oil is between 130-150° F) and it normally can not burn on its own without a wick. Also on safety it would be better to use a pretty thick round wick in this design because that would prevent the liquid from leaking out in case you accidental bump over the lamp.

    Nice job, nice video ! But please practice speaking without saying "gonna" in every sentence. It sounds somewhat uneducated to talk that way, because "gonna" is not even a word. Instead of saying, "I'm gonna make a hole," say "I will make a hole." American schoolkids say "gonna" a lot because they are too lazy to inflect the verbs properly, and their lazy teachers do not correct them... it sounds awful. My guess is that you picked up "gonna" from them. You do nice videos... Keep up the good work !
