  • Professor Francis Xavier Clooney (Parkman Professor of Divinity at the Harvard Divinity School) gives a discourse on the teachings of Sri Ramanuja who was the chief proponent of the Vishishtadvaita school of Vedanta.
Father Clooney joined the Harvard Divinity School faculty in 2005. After earning his doctorate in South Asian languages and civilizations (University of Chicago, 1984), he taught at Boston College for 21 years before coming to Harvard.
His primary areas of Indological scholarship are theological commentarial writings in the Sanskrit and Tamil traditions of Hindu India. He is also a leading figure globally in the developing field of comparative theology, a discipline distinguished by attentiveness to the dynamics of theological learning deepened through the study of traditions other than one’s own. He has also written on the Jesuit missionary tradition, particularly in India, on the early Jesuit pan-Asian discourse on reincarnation, and on the dynamics of dialogue and interreligious learning in the contemporary world.

    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Very well said. I can give literally thousands of (no exaggeration) examples of such kind from ancient to our modern times where religions favoured one another and recognised the Divine Truth in the other (without of course falling into the error of syncretism). These examples are counterintuitive to our contemporary paradigm of looking at religion. The sad irony is that in pre modern times religion was all pervasive and people very religious and saw the same Divinity in other traditions in contrast with today's world where there is loss of religion. Religion emptied of its Divine content is replaced by ideology. Hence there are clash of mere ideologies e.g. nationalism (which is erroneously reported in the media as clash of religions). In short it is absense of religion which produces clash.

@@dhananjaisamant895 you are made an excellent comment...it was enlighten me. Yes you seem correct, in past time there were a tolerance and respect for each other...recognize that God is something too perfect and divine to encase in book and politics...today not only is there a no religion at all, political idea is fashioned as religion...by people who brag that they are the "real religion".

Outstanding Presentation. You are truly gifted, to have read and understood deeply the works of Shri Ramanuja. My limitation is my vocabulary . In one word, if I have to say how you presented the theological aspect in a very easy way is just simply "Awesome".
The explanation, you gave for "Adiyen (அடியேன்)" ... To be at the feet of the lord and serve him. This one sentence will touch every vaishnav across the globe.
Your comment on meditation is nothing but a "A long loving look at God".
May God Bless You and Your Family.

I disagree with you about what India needs today . The various versions of Hinduism as preached by our past Spiritual leaders have not confrontational . They lived side by side till India was invaded by the 2 monotheistic evangelical religions . What we need in India today is for the invading foreign religions to shut up and not create schism in society . India was , is and will always be a Dharmic civilization. The problem is those of monotheistic religions .

Excellent, thank you! I've always appreciated Prof. Clooney's review statements in Swami Chetanananda's wonderful books. I would also like to comment that only Advaita can be true. How could omnipresence, infinity, oneness share existence with anything else? There's no 'room' for anything else - other than appearance. Of course, infinite reality must have infinite paths to the realization of that truth, with each path based on a (apparent) person's individual spiritual preference. PS - Very nice epilogue by Swamiji!

    • @chendaforest
      @chendaforest 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Swamiji was asked a similar question in his Chit Heads interview; he gave a pretty good answer which suggested that qualified non dualism and advaita can be reconciled. I won't try a explain how because I can't give justice to his words :)

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT BEING A HINDU?
    By Francois Gautier
    1) Believe in God ! - Aastik - Accepted
    2) Don't believe in God ! - You're accepted as Nastik
    3) You want to worship idols - please go ahead. You are a murti pujak.
    4) You dont want to worship idols - no problem. You can focus on Nirguna Brahman.
    5) You want to criticise something in our religion. Come forward. We are logical. Nyaya, Tarka etc. are core Hindu schools.
    6) You want to accept beliefs as it is. Most welcome. Please go ahead with it.
    7) You want to start your journey by reading Bhagvad Gita - Sure !
    8) You want to start your journey by reading Upanishads - Go ahead.
    9) You want to start your journey by reading Purana - Be my guest.
    10) You just don't like reading Puranas or other books. No problem my dear. Go by Bhakti tradition . ( bhakti- devotion)
    11) You don't like idea of Bhakti ! No problem. Do your Karma. Be a karmayogi.
    12) You want to enjoy life. Very good. No problem at all. This is Charvaka Philosophy.
    13) You want to abstain from all the enjoyment of life & find God - jai ho ! Be a Sadhu, an ascetic !
    14) You don't like the concept of God. You believe in Nature only - Welcome. (Trees are our friends and Prakriti or nature is worthy of worship).

"Vasudhaiva kutumbakam" (the world is a family)
    20) You don't have time to celebrate the festival.
Don't worry. One more festival is coming! There are multiple festivals every single day of the year.
    21) You are a working person. Don't have time for religion. Its okay. You will still be a Hindu.
    22) You like to go to temples. Devotion is loved.
    23) You don't like to go to temples - no problem. You are still a Hindu!
    24) You know that Hinduism ☺ is a way of life, with considerable freedom.
    25) You believe that everything has God in it. So you worship your mother, father, guru, tree, River, Prani-matra, Earth, Universe!
    26) And If you don't believe that everything has GOD in it - No problems. Respect your viewpoint.
    27) "Sarve jana sukhino bhavantu " (May you all live happily)
You represent this! You're free to choose, my dear Hindu!
This is exactly the essence of Hinduism, all inclusive .. That is why it has withstood the test of time inspite of repeated onslaught both from within and outside, and assimilated every good aspects from everything . That is why it is eternal !!!
There is a saying in Rigveda , the first book ever known to mankind which depicts the Hinduism philosophy in a Nutshell -" Ano bhadrah Krathavo Yanthu Vishwathah"- Let the knowledge come to us from every direction"....
