If anyone has perioral dermatitis like me, just a friendly advice my dermatologist gave me, be VERY mindful of the foam from your toothpaste touching your skin since the fluor in it might exhacervate the perioral dermatitis.
loreela22 thank you so much for this tip! Really appreciate it 🙏🏻
Thank you! I’m currently treating my perioral dermatitis and this is a great tip :)
shoot
I actually stop using thoothpaste with Fluor. Helped a lot.
omg yes! if i ever got any on my rash it burned so bad! good tip
Man, I wish I had a dermatologist or esthetician that seem to care about their client’s skin like these two. The one dermatologist I went to didn’t even ask me what products I was using or asked about my skin type or even looked at my skin really. She just asked me why I was there (I said hyperpigmentation) and she gave me Epiduo. The product is working but I just got the feeling she was giving me something she gave all her clients that complained of hyperpigmentation rather than considering what products were actually good for my skin. Dermatologists are too expensive and uncommon in my area (I would have to go 30-45 mins out of my area) for me to be trying 101 people, hoping to find one who cares enough.
I feel like in order to get quality care from people like these two women, you have to live in LA or NY where quality dermatologists and estheticians are everywhere.
Same. I went to a feel dermatologists and they said for me "cleanse your skin, use acne products and sunscreen" (but I don't have a acne prone skin at all I was just a teenager that wore makeup) my skin at the time was normal not even tending to oily.
Today, because I was using not ideal products (and the fact that I was ignorant about skincare) I have fine lines and dry dehydrated skin at 22. I'm trying to get back to my normal skin, that's a long path ahead (thank God I now know how to research by myself).
I had a similar experience with a dermatologist. I was struggling bad with acne and was so insecure. I finally decided to see a dermatologist and I was so nervous and embarrassed because of my skin. She barely let me speak without cutting me off and dismissing me. I had so many questions that I didn’t get to ask. I’m sorry you had a bad experience too
My dermatologist told me I don’t need to moisturize my acne-prone, oily skin. In the end, that made my skin look even worse.
Laysa Ferreira Silva I’m so sorry for your experience! I didn’t have good experiences with Dermatologists either. I would recommend you try a Vitamin C to renew and regenerate your skin and the collagen in it (I love the Jan Marini C-Esta Serum, they have a regular one and an “Oil-Control” one for oily/acne-prone skin.) and then I think you just need to protect and rebuild your skin barrier, maybe with a good face moisturizer with Shea Butter in it. I really like Pevonia products because they’re pretty gentle but they work well. I’m not an expert at all. Just a fellow 22 year old working on my skincare too. I love that Jan Marini C-Esta Serum (I use the oil control one for my face because I have acne-prone, sensitive/reactive skin)
Trisha Lindsay sane here, I haven’t had the best experience with the dermatologist I visited.
These acne focused videos have been so incredibly helpful. My skin isn’t clear yet but watching your videos over the past few weeks and applying the knowledge has done wonders for my scarring.
Janie Tyrell I hope your skin continues to improve!
What are you doing for your scarring? I have managed to stop my cystic acne from growing with a prescription benzoyl peroxide cream, but I’m still dealing with the scarring from the past.
jasmine Thank you so much Jasmine!
BrightBlueSummer
I added the glycolic acid toner and niacinamide + zinc from the ordinary. If you can use a retinol or retinoid, though, that is the #1 best thing for scarring! I can’t use them because I never stop purging after 5 months so it only makes my scarring worse but it works amazing for people who can tolerate it (which is most people). Over-the-counter Differin from a drug store is usually amazing for our skin type.
Janie Tyrell Thank you so much! Scarring is so annoying, especially if it’s from past cystic acne. Even if I put on high coverage foundation you can see it.
Do a dermatologist react for rosacea!!
I would like to learn about to treat Milia
Yes!!!!!
Gothamista does a great video about Millia with some helpful recommendations.
Celly Jordan same here. I have it around my mouth. 😕
You can’t really treat it. You need a facialist to extract them. Or if you can learn to do it yourself with a sterilized needle. It’s just a hard collection of keratin cells that are a solid lump deep under the skin. Getting a good facial they should know how to extract them. Trying to treat them with acids just won’t typically work or it’ll take like a year to slowly peel away enough skin to get that deep. Which is way worse than having a pro do it for you in 5 min.
Me too!! I have it bad around my eyes and mouth 😔
Hi Susan and Nina! Thank you so much for the sweet video! 👍🏼
Yes, I thought I was having another acne flare up but found out about the perioral dermatitis from my doctor. Since then, it hasn’t completely gone away (frustrating!) so I am continuing visiting the doctor. After filming the video, it actually got much worse, but it has now plateaued. I’ll be sure to keep you updated! I have a strong feeling it’s stress related. I’m so happy to know that my skincare routine is OK! Sometimes when something like this happens, it’s easy to throw everything out and start over! Thanks, again! 😊😊😊
About the perioral dermatitis: Please avoid acids on the lower half of your face, and be very careful with products containing fragrance. For me Metroindazole-cream (cream, not gel) has helped a lot :)
Holy shit, Jessie, I’m from Iowa too. I was gonna say, “GO HAWKS” but it looks like you’re wearing an Iowa State shirt 😜
Hi! I would definitely get rid of the toner. It has a lot of fragrance and that could be very sensitizing and irritating for your skin. Hope it gets better soon!
I have been struggling with PD for almost 10 years. 🥺 For me the only products worth mentioning are: 1) Mario Badescu drying lotion (now I have PD that looks like bumps around my mouth and nose, it can dry them within 15 days into red scars).. 2) Spectro Gel (amazing!) 3) Weleda Skin Food Light Cream the only one that doesnt cause flare-ups... Hope I have been of some help!😊
And the other part of healing for me comes from taking care of my gut, cause stress causes the imbalance of gut bacteria.
That’s what my derm said to do, as does much info on the internet..to completely simplify and cutout everything except a gentle cleanser and light lotion when you’re having PD
I really *love* the videos with a dermatologist giving their feedback and knowledge in the mix! Thank you so much for all the helpful content Susan (and Nina). 😊
Can we see the dermatologist skincare
It‘s on bazaar.
THANK YOU for talking about periorial dermatitis!!! I have struggled with it for years (people always say it looks just like acne as you pointed out) and it's SO refreshing to hear others going through it and hear your guys' recommendations. LOVE this series. xoxo
I feel you girl, it can be such a pain! Pumpkin seed oil helps clears mine usually.
As a former fellow periorial dermatitis sufferer, I recommend trying Avéne's Cicalfate post procedure lotion if you haven't already. I also started taking probiotics and that's helped keep my PD gone for good.

Belma Mizdrak A lot of people with Pd like Spectrogel for some reason most of the amazon reviews are from pd ppl
Susan! These videos are so helpful!!! Never stop them please! Thank you ladies!!!
could you unpack that “toners don’t balance your ph level” topic. im genuinely curious because i feel like there’s soooo much conflicting information about this. loving this series btw 🥰.
I know Dr. Desai is a dermatologist but her blanket statements about some of these products being fine to use contradicts my own experience with perioral dermatitis. That drunk elephant jelly cleanser stung my PD rash like a m*th&f*ck&r. The best skincare line I ever found for getting my PD flare ups to heal and prevent them from reoccurring was Avéne skincare's Cicalfate cream and especially the Cicalfate post procedure lotion. Something about the copper-zinc sulfate in it was the only thing that 100% cleared my PD rash after almost two years of battling it. Now whenever I have occasional flare ups (my triggers are travel and too much wine, hi it sucks) I use the post procedure lotion and it heals up and goes away again in about a week.
If you suffer from a big PD inflammation thats stinging and flakey, I really recommend looking at skincare lines that are super vigilant about being sterile and hypo-allergenic with no perfumes or other inflammatory ingredients.
Also, the low-dose antibiotics regime worked at first but then my PD kept coming back because the antibiotics had killed a lot of my good gut flora. No bueno.
Bop Deboop I totally agree!!!
The lactic or any acid is too aggressive for PD.
She mentioned, 3-4 times, that each skincare regime is individual and people react to products differently. Her blanket statements are likely generalisations from experience.
Cicalfate is my hero product! It doesn’t get enough love
@@laurenj6974 It is a complete life saver. I still put it on overnight because I feel like it helps with my natural redness.
Did it go away for good ? Any tips on how to get rid of it other than the avene cream?
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I have been dealing with perioral dermatitis for about a year now and people don't understand how frustrating it can be. People never talk about it and I am happy to see that you are shedding a light on it. You guys are an amazing duo! Thanks for making these amazing videos
Dr. Nina is my favorite guest on this channel! I love these videos they're so helpful 😊
This was so informative for me because I suffered from dermatitis around my cheeks and I know it was from adding oils on my face
Dr. Desai is drop dead gorgeous, beautiful nose, beautiful skin...I trust anything these two woman say just by their own self care you can trust they know what they’re talking about! Great series
I cannot stress enough how awesome this segment of the channel is!!
thank you for showing that there are many different types of “acne,” and many different types of skin!! i was struggling with inflammatory acne while at the same time my skin was INSANELY dry- in my case, one size absolutely did not fit all for acne care & videos like these are so so helpful
Dr. Nina is giving me some serious Lady Gaga vibes😃
tobyMacBallerina ra ra ooh la la
She sounds like her.
Totally.
First thing I thought! She looks like Gaga & sounds just like her too!
Ignore those vibes.
Susan! This series with dermatologists has been SOOO helpful and informative. Thank you thank you so much!
Yes Susan Yara! Ugh, a Queen!
This series is amazing ❤ you go mama
Love this series!! Can't wait for cystic acne
I would like to know about eczema\atopic dermatitis with dry and sensitive acne prone skin 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I love you 💕😘
zinni emj 100% agree! Suffering from eczema is no joke!
I just love this series. It's so interesting to see what everyone uses!
I don’t use any products with mineral oil because they don’t know exactly what causes perioral dermatitis but it’s possibly mineral oil. So that Pond’s cream could be a culprit. I used to be prone to perioral dermatitis.
The girl said that Cerave moisturizer was not enough for her in winter. You suggested to skip oil at the end, but you did not suggest any alternative solution to her dry skin complaint. I would recommend her to use a good humectant toner, light moisturizing serum and probably a more moisturizing cream instead of this Cerave.
Congrats on 1 million subscribers! Love this channel 🥰
Love this series!! I have learned that I needed to update my routine as I am getting older, my skin in more normal with occasional breakout due to hormones. I grew up with oily acne skin and the products were not helping any more! I have switched to more balanced and gentle products that focus on texture and tone of my skin and it has immensely improved. I am one of those people that I can use an oil (Kora Organics Noni Glow Oil) at night only. Learning so much... keep these coming!😍😍
You two are a great team. I looove this Series sooo much!
Please please please someone with more melaninated skin or hyperpigmentation. I need to knowwwww
Bibbi DaSilva yes please
The only video Susan has done for darker skintone is the one where she reacted to A Flight Attendants skin care routine and its quite helpful as it addressed hyperpigmentation.
This would be an awful routine for my perioral dermatitis prone skin! Retinoids are a huge trigger for most and acids are tricky too. I hope neither of the cleansers contain SLS because that’s also a huge trigger. I totally agree with another commenter that suggested Avene Cicalfate cream. I hope no perioral dermatitis sufferers copy this routine because in my non-medical opinion but as someone who has easily cleared out outbreaks in the last 8 years it is more likely to cause PD than to help it.
I know to learn more about dry skin and black heads
Malak Al-Dossari You should use a salicylic acid face wash! My fav that has really really helped me with whiteheads and black heads is the Cerave renewing SA cleanser (I have combo-dry sensitive skin btw)
@@OhthatsChloe thank you! ill give it a try!!!:)
I really appreciate that you guys say we should definitely go to our dermatologist and not just take your advice, because I was doing a double cleanse and my dermatologist said that my skin is so sensitive and easily irritated/inflamed (I have eczema and issues like that) that I shouldn’t double cleanse. Everybody is different and I appreciate that you guys make sure we know that your advice doesn’t make sense for everyone.
This dermatologist is awesome! So knowledgeable. 📚 👍🏼
I have been experiencing a red rash around my mouth and chin with tiny white pustules that appear suddenly and frequently throughout the day. I saw a dermatologist but the appointment happened during a time when the flare up had calmed down significantly, but I did have one deep pimple in the area so was diagnosed with acne. I’ve been on doxycycline for 3 weeks and my skin flared up again about 1 week ago. I have another appointment with my dermatologist in 4 weeks but am concerned she won’t see the flare up at it’s worst. I have also been diagnosed with chronic urticaria but the wheels I experience look different to what is happening on my face.
I know leaving a comment here is a long shot but if anyone has any advice I’d really appreciate it.
I love your content Susan and really enjoy watching your work here on TH-cam and on Instagram :)
please make a video on Seborrheic dermititis.. routine/Product recommendations
Try the La Roche Posay Kerium DS cream. It's the only thing that works for my boyfriend, his skin flares up during winter. Good luck!
Marianna Touloudi Thank you! Will try for sure.
1 Million subcriber, Congratulations! Love this series 💛💛💛
I’m confused /surprised she okayed the PMD. Perioral Dermatitis is an inflammatory condition with a compromised barrier. Every other source I’ve seen says to be very gentle and that a cleansing tool would exacerbate the inflammation. ?
I wear 0 makeup, my skin is oily but have no acne. I’ve been looking for a video for something and this video helped somewhat. Definitely need a video for ppl who don’t wear makeup but want a skin care routine
I got rid of my POD by using just Cerave gentle cleanser and cream. I avoid plant oils on my skin like Coconut, shea butter etc. Occasionally I use Clinique Take The Day off balm and Clinique mineral sunscreen.
I would love to hear your advice for someone with seborrheic dermatitis , or someone with the drier types of dermatitis. I find that cica is helpful for healing the inflammations and flakes.
I will be waiting for routine for people with seborrheic dermatitis too!!!
would love a moisturizer recommendations for perioral dermatitis that are cruelty free
My perioral dermatitis is stress related. And didn’t start flaring up until I hit my 30s. I’ve had one nasty flare and one small mild one.
@Gen that is great! thank you, I will add that to my tbr!!
Also for perioral, watch out for toothpaste
rosskilla216 Yas! She should switch to sulfate free!!! I did many many years ago.
And potentially fluoride free
Please do one on seborrheic dermatitis :(
M C in most of cases it’s treated the same way. Try anti-fungal creams, tea tree oil
This series is brilliant! Keep them coming 💕👍🏽
I have this skin condition too! I use the '9 to 5' from Lush but only rub it in my face for like 5 seconds. Then i wash it off multiple times with a clean washcloth and water! Then use some camomile water and Weleda almond light moisturizer! This has cleared my skin so much! Also! I don't wear make everyday anymore! Not needed! What do you think? I also heard PRP is great for this
I wish dermatologists would come to a consensus on perioral dermatitis, some say retinal/retinoids/all actives are bad, some say they are OK. Some say SLS is bad, some say SLS is fine, fluoride is bad, fluoride is OK, most prescribe steroids which make it worse. If it's so common, figure it out but no because then they can't make money off of you...
Great video as always!! Would love to know what eyeshadow dr. Nina wears? It's gorgeous!
why you dont said anything about hydration, dry and oily at yhe same time, may be she is dehyration, need something liquid and hydrate to plump up the skin, regular sebum and help with inner dryness
Yesssssss!! Loooove Dr Desai. Always learning from your videos!
23armies do you know how old she is?💕
Want to know Dr. Nina's skin care routine!
I used to use my adapalene 0.1% first at night, just after washing my face, but it was irritating. Nowadays I use it as the last step of my nighttime skincare routine and it's soooo much better, not irritating and it actually seems to work wonders for my pimples.
Omg this video was just what I needed! Thank youuu🥰
🤔 clindamycin gel definitely makes me more dry. It is also listed as a common side effect. While my PD is flaring, my barrier is too poor to handle the additional drying effect.
Info on treating seborrheic dermatitis, please! I’ve had the worst itching and flaking since having a baby. I’ve tried everything (including prescription shampoo from the derm). Taking antihistamine is the only thing that prevents the itch. Help! 🙏🏻
What should you do if retinoids, including adapalene, worsen your perioral dermatitis but you are acne prone too?
Very good series!! Also when is The Sass coming back?? Miss it
What if you have severe dry skin and also acne prone skin 😫
I’m curious about Dr. Desai’s opinion on the cerave night cream! In some other skincare reactions it seemed she wasn’t a fan of some occlusive moisturizers for acneic skin, so I was wondering what specifically about this cream or this particular person’s routine would make the cerave night cream a good choice? (i LOVE this product myself and have acneic skin!)
Hopefully there will be a video about fungal acne as well
The cerave skin renewing night cream is SUPER occlusive. Lots of Shea butter and dimethicone. I tried it in a moment of desperation during winter last year, but I can’t use it without breaking out. The cerave PM facial moisturizing lotion is a much better option for acne-prone skin, I think.
Susan you’re hitting all the hot topics for me! Melasma dermatitis acne!!! My chin and upper eyelids drive me nuts with Dermatitis and I’m super allergic to grasses like you.
I would really like an appreciate if you could only mention on how to treat whiteheads and bumpy textured skin
How do I meet with her!?! I’ve met with my derm so many times about this but she gets confused with all the skincare. She really only does basic stuff. I need deeper step by step help
Yes! I can watch before bedtime. 😴
Isn’t perioral dermatitis caused by candida overgrowth in your system. I got mine from going on antibiotics (which kill bad AND good bacteria in your gut), for my skin. My doctor prescribed me an oral antifungal and gave me probiotic and with some time PD went away and never came back. If I know I’m sick and need antibiotic I take probiotics to keep my system balanced. I feel like perioral dermatitis is very a mysterious thing that we don’t fully understand. But antibiotics can definitely exacerbate the situation like treating fire with fire kind of. Just my experience.
YES!!! I was so frustrated when I heard them praising her for going on antibiotics, that only clears up PD rashes at first but then it comes roaring back! Mine was triggered by traveling and then I kept drinking wine and eating too much wheat & sugar that made my body go haywire. I take probiotics regularly now and haven't had PD since, but I totally agree with you that it's sort of a mysterious thing because science hasn't fully explored how our internal health (i.e. candida) is linked to our skin.
there is no evidence for it being caused by candida overgroth. Glad yours cleared up though :)
Bop Deboop yes !! I was so surprised/ upset to see them both so sure of that_ because antibiotics are amazing when needed but also wreak havoc on our stomachs and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Also antibiotics aren’t a definite cure for it, it’s something doctors TRY bc they don’t understand the root of the problem. It can make the rash go away for a little bc it’s killing the yeast and good bacteria in your stomach for a while but once you’re done you’re left with more of a hotbed for candida to grow so it comes back. Look up what a yeast rash looks like - it’s PD. Again this was my experience and I feel so sad for ppl who struggle w it bc I was so sad to not have answers and be told it would come back periodically!
I was always given anti-fungal creams for it, so yeah, I think so. It was also strongly triggered by stress.
@@emoboost8528 There's lots of possible causes and triggers for sure, but candida has also been documented to be one of them. And likewise!
Honestly, I think perioral derm is also mostly caused by over use of moisturizing. Occlusive products and over layering has been indicated as a possible cause of PD. So she should probably also take a break from that.
Hi Susan, could you do a video dedicated to products from "The Body Shop"? Items that you think are with buying like the toners, moisturizers and facial serums or oils. I lovee your channel so much, it has helped me learn a lot about skincare and what products are best for each skin type :)
Would you be able to do an episode for a good routine to help toddler eczema? I know this is mostly for adult skin but maybe on FAM
Shakira Walli having been a toddler with eczema and still occasionally getting flare ups, I love(d) aquaphor! I also took a lot of neutrogena oatmeal baths. Granted that was 20 years ago, so of course you’ll want to double check with a dermatologist.
@@genie195 thanks!
Hi Susan, could you please do a video about Lush skincare products like cleansers, masks etc . Thankss x
Congrats on 1M subs, Susan!!!
Can u cure the perioral dermatitis permanently?
It's so exhausting with all the products and medicine to simply treat symptoms and not cure the underlying causes.
Can you please do a post accutane video!
seeing these videos inspires me so much that i might send in my own skincare routine!
I developed Perioral Dermatitis about 4-5 weeks ago, I was put on an antibiotic and after 5 days I got so sick. Hives fever rash nausea 😭 I’ll have to buy a gentle cleanser and cerave
I’m on it too. Are you allergic?
SheGotFit doctor says it was most likely an allergic reaction
Jeanette Perez awe I’m sorry. Did your pd get better? I have it now 😭
SheGotFit it did get better right away with the antibiotics. I stopped using foundation with fragrances in them and I’m using less harsh skincare products. It sucks! Talk to your dermatologist for sure! Good luck hun
Do you need to use cerave eye cream if you’re already using cerave moisturizer?
I am confused. Late 20s... history of acne... I would assume some post-inflammatory pigmentation. Wouldn't you add a Vit C serum (like Timeless) in the morning? Or is that contraindicated if on Clindamycin? Would like to know this so I can advise my daughters. They are on clindamycin, and I told them to consider Vit C.... Was that a bad recommendation?
Hey. Can you do a video about skin care when you have rosacea and anti-ageing
amazing series!!! can you please do a video about PCOS?
I am 48 with great skin - until this July! Peri Oral Dermatitis hit me. I was prescribed metro gel, then clindimycin, neither helped. It's burning and hurts. My products tend to be natural - no preservatives (Pure Haven) but I am open to anything that helps. I have a minocylcine prescription waiting for me - But I really want to see if I can avoid that (because of gut sensitivities). Is there anything else to recommend?
Would it be appropriate to use differin while breastfeeding? I've heard mixed opinions on this, so I've avoided even trying it.
Please do one for psoriasis.
I have dermatitis and my skin and scalp is very dry 😪
Please do a post-flight skincare routine!
When I went to the dr for my acne, they gave me clindimycin to use with benzoyl peroxide in the morning and retin-a at night
does it clear up your skin?
Dhia Cinitra yes! My issue is more on the hormonal acne side and it def changed my face
Can i use the HA5 skinmedica cream if i have perioral dermititis?
Love these videos. And hi from a fellow Iowan.
Do you have any tips for nodules?
Hi Susan, I have a question: So hyaluronic acid hydrates your skin by drawing in moisture from the environment But if the humidity outside is 0, it will draw moisture from your skin, right? So how can I hydrate my skin in a dry climate? (Not moisturized with oils, but actually get water into it)
Put your Hyaluronic acid on damp skin and then immediately seal it with a moisturizer on top
@@biloushka8437 I tried exactly what you said multiple times with the ordinary HA but my skin still ended up super dry. Not sure what went wrong.
@@katiem.6135 which moisturizer did you use?
@@biloushka8437 Ordinary's (lol, I swear this isn't sponsored they're just cheap). Why? Some moisturizers aren't moisturizing enough for the hyluronic acid to work?
@@katiem.6135 some of them are not occlusive enough. Maybe if you add a little drop of oil it could help. I don't have dry skin but some people swear by the CeraVe cream moisturizer in the tub.it's also affordable
I have a question if it is possible use two serums one after another? I have one with glycolic and salicylic acid , and the other one is pretty much retinol and hyaluronic acid. Can I use both of them everyday?
Could you make a video on how to treat blackheads and whiteheads?
I have Perioral Dermatitis, and active ingredients completely aggravates it. Just beware that it could actually make that problem worse
I loveeee this series
could you please do a fungal acne/Malassezia folliculitis breakdown please!!!
Can you make a video on whitehead on dry skin?
I use glycolic acid already
Who else thinks Susan should take up dermatology as another profession 🙌🏼 I jus love her!!!🥰
