    This series is inspiring me to mod my '95 V6. Cool stuff!

    The Selec-Trac (242) transfer case is the way to go for sure, best of both worlds full and part time. My 96 ZJ had the 249 as well, 232k of hard offroading mostly and the viscous coupler finally gave up, last year it was still running around the valley with its current owner with a replacement t-case in it and original engine/transmission and almost 500k on the odometer, the current owner drives it daily its got the 4L I6 engine in it though.
    My current 98 ZJ has the selec-trac transfer case as well as an added bonus of a rear limited slip differential. 158k on it currently and the 4L I6 engine as well.

      Ha! There should be plenty of used (and cheaper) one's out there. Lots of aftermarket options and wrecking yards. Almost had to go that route.

    I’m curious at 2:17 you explained having to exchange the old input shaft into the new case .. is there a 242 case that would bolt right on with only having to change the shift lever ? My 249 just cracked right open and I’m wanting to go 242 route

    • @rhinogear
      @rhinogear 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      242 and 249 have different size input shaft sizes on them. You have to swap the inputs from one to the other and a few other things to mount back up. Not my vid but a good one:th-cam.com/video/3MvW3FL_p8A/w-d-xo.html

    you should have done a SYE while you had the tranfer case split.. great videos though! i have a 95 zj identicle to this one and i love it.

      Thank you for watching! I really wish we did the SYE when we replaced the case. Just have to save that for another day.

    I have a 4.0 with all time 4 and want to change to 242 for more power up hills, so my question is did swapping it out give you more power since it’s not trying to give power to all four wheels? I have a 3.5 lift on 33s. Uphills I can only go 35 with it floored if I’m lucky.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Changing the transfer case doesn't change the amount of power. Sounds like you may have 3.55 gears, you should look into swapping them for at least 3.73's or 4.10's that will give you the "power" back that you are struggling with because of the larger size tires.

    • @xavierb8545
      @xavierb8545 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my differential I have stock 3.73. I’m thinking of swapping them out for a 4.11 or 4.30. I hope it’ll help.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xavierb8545 4.10's, 4.30's, or 4.56's will certainly help a lot LOL. The 3.73's aren't gonna help much I'd look for some 4.10's course it'll result in even lower fuel economy but it'll help get you moving and keep you moving much easier.

    Bro. I have the exact same laredo. 5.2l AWD. Same color. Need to find a new transfer case. And possibly get the new computer. I have dreams to fix up my jeep as well. But it's hard finding lifts and companies for as old as the zj is.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tons of stuff out there for the ZJ's, have you tried JCWhitney, JEGS, 4Wheel Parts?
      Pull a transfer case from a pick a part yard, preferably a 231 or 242 transfer case, unless you really like the full time 4WD feature, I'd grab a parts yard t-case, even if you pull it apart before installing it and rebuild it you'd be money ahead.

    Здравствуйте! У меня гранд чироки zj 5.2 на клемах аккумулятора показывает 14вольт а на приборной панели стрелка зарядки играет иногда стоит 14 а иногда около 12 что это может быть помогите разобратся

    • @azoffroad_net
      @azoffroad_net  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Здравствуйте александр! Thanks for watching. I noticed that my ZJ is hovering between 12 and 14 volts on the battery gauge after running for a while at idle. As long as it shows about 14 volts when driving at revs, I think you will be fine. Еще раз спасибо!

    did replacing the computer stoped the stalling issues? I have a Cherokee 2004 and its been stalling lately

    • @azoffroad_net
      @azoffroad_net  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It actually did. I replaced the Crank Positions Sensor about 6 months before and I still had some quirky issues. The new computer seemed to fix everything.

    Video on mounting Those additional headlights pls ?

    • @azoffroad_net
      @azoffroad_net  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was honestly really easy. Just two bolts through the roof rack rails to hold the lights on. The wiring was a little more intricate - you need to run a power and a load wire from the battery to the lights and to a switch. You can use all the paneling and roof liner to hide the wires and put the switch wherever you want. I'll try and post a better explanation and maybe a video detailing this on our website in the next few weeks if that'll help?

    I'm not sure you'll get my comment, but the switch you install at 6:58? Where did you buy that? I've been trying to find one of the exact style for awhile

    • @azoffroad_net
      @azoffroad_net  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael -- we got them from Napa. The P/N's are GRO 822137 (blue), GRO 822134 (yellow), GRO 822135 (green), & GRO 822133 (red).

    same issue with me on the computer. hopefully you didn't damage your cat while testing the 4.0 computer.

    • @azoffroad_net
      @azoffroad_net  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never thought of that! The cat was less than 6 months old when all this happened. So far, so good though.

    the transfer case 242 is AWD to?

    • @azoffroad_net
      @azoffroad_net  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. Options on the 242 are 2WD, 4WD part time (AWD), 4-High, Neutral, and 4-Low.

    • @Mutaku
      @Mutaku 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      4WD part time is your normal 4 High. the third options is 4 full time which is similiar to the AWD in the 249 except instead of the viscous it acts more like an open diff.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it has both part time and full time 4WD high range modes. The 242 doesn't have a viscous coupler but instead uses a planetary gear set to mimick an open differential like you would find in your front or rear axle to allow for different speeds when turning. It works great, and many people switch to this transfer case from their 249 or 247 equipped Jeeps, or they go to the 231 command trac transfer case which is only part time 4wd.

    I bought a brand new computer for my L6 Cherokee. CRAP!!! Chrystler SUCKS!!! I bought a used computer from a junk yard. 6 years ago, the Jeep is still running like a dream. I can not believe a company like the AMC ended up in the hands of chrystler assholes.

    • @azoffroad_net
      @azoffroad_net  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Junkyard/aftermarket was the backup plan if the last computer didn't work. Lots of good stuff out there. Unfortunately I ended up with a couple of bad ones.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very sad but very true :(. They were way a head of their time with several options they had back then, like the AMC Eagle cars that were 4WD. Pretty standard on many "crossover" vehicles today they created the crossover market and didn't even know what they had back then, I'd love an old AMC Eagle.
