    FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Feral Kimchi I have my own little cessna 150. Costs about $600 a month to own before flying. then you add about $50 an hour for gas. It’s not fancy, but its my own airplane. So get through school and start getting that debt down, and it’s a good possibility!

Late to this video, but wanted to add that I’ve flown with someone, who lived on the island, in and out of Orcas on a Bonanza. About a year later he was flying his family, four including him, back to the island in a Piper P28-181 in the early night/evening. Due to low fog and ceiling and bad pressure settings, his altimeter was set roughly 350 feet high and he crashed a quarter to a third of a mile from the runway. One of his family members wasn’t able to get out before it sank. Single engine flying over water like this is no joke people! Be prepared!

Man! I just finished my PPL at Galvin and I’ve personally flown with all 3 of the Galvin a flight instructors! It’s so amazing to see you and Steven flying around in the airspace I trained in, and to fly out of 13L (now 14L) which is the runway I did my first solo landing on! And also when you were holding short of 13L that 152 landing was 6378M, the plane I got checked out in!! Small world man! Keep making awesome videos!

The entire area is a visual flight feast. My wife & I took a float plane ride from Victoria waterfront in an old Kenmore Air beaver to Seattle waterfront. On arrival we took a bus & cab to tour the Boeing plant. We returned to Victoria in a turbine beaver then hopped on a AC 737 to CYYZ, all in a day!

Steve, my mother was a Canadian, born around Belleville, Ontario. She grew up in Toronto! I consider Toronto my "adopted" city. I spent years up there as a boy with him over the summers. He came over from Great Britain right before the Blitz. I spent many weeks in and around Vancover as well. There was an excellent steak place downtown near the "Top of Vancover."
I remember that city as fog central which always hampered our flights in and out. I know you are from around Toronto yourself and was curious if you heard that?
This was an excellent video yet again! Had to laugh about bringing the tail up early on the Cub lol! I heard that is easilty done!

My fun story, back in 2016 I took a piper archer up to Winnipeg with my girlfriend for a weekend camping trip and time building for Commercial. I did a lot of research to get ready for the flight, but I only had about a month ahead to plan everything out, I should have planned earlier to make sure I had my border protection sticker and radio card but I was able to work everything out where customs let me fly with just confirmation numbers for each item and not actually have them. The Customs agent said the customs sticker is really just a border crossing tax and he just needed to confirm I had paid for it whether I had the sticker or not. I filed an IFR flight plan and eAPIS flight plan and everything went really well. It was quite a hassle and I haven't done it since however. So we landed in Winnipeg and customs wasn't there to meet us so we stayed in the plane and chatted with the ramp guys for a bit. after about 15 minutes with no agents showing up I called customs phone number, told them we were on the ground and waiting for an agent, the guy on the phone gave me a confirmation number to write down then said "welcome to Canada, you're released, enjoy your stay." So we landed in Canada and never saw a customs agent haha. Funny getting back in to my home country was more of a hassle than flying in to Canada.

Nice that you totally blew off the noise abatement procedures on your arrival to KORS. It has been NOTAM'd for years. As for the "I don't normally use flight following" comment (by the CFI?), why not? How does NOT having flight following make any flight safer? ATC can notify you of hazards, traffic, airspace, ... Why would you not want that? Just so you don't have to listen them on radio?

It is a real testament to Gilbert Taylor (no relation) that is design is still being built 87 years later.
I had a few lessons in a J-3 back in the 80's and they are a very fun plane to fly.
Whatever happened to the cub with the prop strike you had on a while back? Can you maybe do an update?

So what would be the procedure to cross the Bering Strait, say Khabarovsk to Fairbanks (with a landing at Fairbanks)? I imagine it would be even more involved than this, right?

I am just a bit too young to start flight training, and it is just a bit expensive at cheapest £8000, but there is also a microlight field near my home, will it be better to get a ultralight licence, then get a PPL later on in life? And how much can it cost?

Well I'm doing my SPL and I'm going to get my ppl. As far as I know it's cheaper yes.

What does CFI stand for in USA and Canada, because here in Australia it stands for Chief Flight Instructor, i.e: the head of flight training at a school. I have a sneaking suspicion thats not what it means for you guys...

yes, Certified Flight Instructor ... what do you all call instructors there? "officially"

    • @ggroombr
      @ggroombr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We are just called Flight Instructors, there are 3 tiers of instructor here however. Grade 3 fresh instructor with no hours and with restrictions. Grade 2, minimum 200hrs ab-initio flight instruction and less restricted. Grade 1 minimum 500hrs ab-inition flight instruction. All 3 Grades of flight instructor can instruct for the purpose of a license/endorsement up to the Commercial Level. From there we have the Chief flying instructor and above that flight examiners which you do all your flight tests with.

I'm I correct that you need a Third Class Medical to also land in Canada and that they don't accept BasicMed or has that changed?

    • @goatflieg

I had heard the same, so I renewed my Third Class Medical this month. Still hoping to fly with the CH2A guys, but hasn't happened yet this year. Gotta call and find out how late in the season they fly...
