      Hello. Interesting, I wonder if you know his family back in Kiribati and which island he comes from. Hope you do get to travel there and find your connections. Cheers!

    Mauri...Looks like the old MOANAROI that used to go to Canton and Christmas Island years ago at 1:49 ship to the far left. Betio was crowded and very dirty (rubbish everywhere, plastic bags should be banned in Kiribati like in parts of Australia)) when I was there, I remember the Seamens Club and Paradise Club, my friend Hang Kum-Kee owned that and his brother George owned the Betio Hotel. I wonder if Cliff Farr still has the Yamaha agency and Paul McClaughlin the Betio Hardware shop? Used to play squash in a former Japanese war bunker at MTC. Still remember the Toddy Cutters doing the morning and afternoon cut singing as they went, I used to love some sour Toddy and also Kamaimai too. In the early 1980's film night in the local Maneaba was always fun. Sad to see the Otintaai Hotel falling on hard times, is the Ambo Lagoon Club still going?...My favourite places were Abemama, Banaba, Little Makin and Abaiang...ko raba for the memories Kiribati Gardener.😎

      Mauri. You may be right re Moanaraoi. There are two rubbish removals now; the Council and the Green Bag that goes around collecting rubbish every week if their trucks work. I think they still need to educate the public of which is rubbish as they pile up the roadside with green waste too. The recycling has helped a little bit with the rubbish as people are into recycling to make money. Yes, unless they banned plastic bags, the problem remains. The Seaman’s Club still operates. Not sure about the Lagoon club, I think it only the maneaba there. I think Cliff Farr Yamaha store still open but the Betio hardware is now owned by King Kum Kee. We missed the Otintaai Hotel too. You said, you were there in the 80’s, what year? My husband is interested because he taught at KGV/EBS 1981-1989. His name is Dave Sandford. Thanks for your interest. Cheers

      @@temwaiku I see the "Dave Sandford" maneaba during your video. I think Hang Kum-Kee would have passed on by now. Ambo Lagoon Club was an expatriate club and I-Kiribati of "social standing" were also members. In Australia recyling is promoted by paying 10 cents on each drink and beer can returned to an "automated receival centre" so you never see cans laying about as children collect them. I was in/out of Kiribati between 1983-2000, spent a lot of my time in Majuro and Nauru too. Remember the girls heading to school in their blue and white uniforms looking very smart. Nikon-Boon was another club back in the time also the "Betio Club" at the start of the causeway, lot of fights used to happen there in public service pay weeks. So what happened to the Otintaai Hotel? Poor management, increased competition?, maybe the Chinese or Japanese will buy it, they are taking over everything elsewhere.

    Why is Tanaea all but abandoned while Betio is so crowded?

    • @temwaiku
      @temwaiku  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question. I do wonder too why it’s abandoned; landowners dispute or a big project on the pipeline?!

    Hello! I loved your video! But I would like to know, in your opinion, what is the most iconic place/image in the capital (South Tarawa)? I'm doing research and needed to know which part of the city is most representative. For example, in Paris, we have the Eiffel Tower, in Rio de Janeiro, the Corcovado, with Christ the Redeemers. What would be the meaningful equivalent of South Tarawa?

    • @temwaiku
      @temwaiku  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello. The most iconic place or images on South Tarawa are the remnants of the World War II or the Battle of Tarawa. The newest landmark would be the Betio to Bairiki causeway or Dai Nippon Causeway built by the Japanese. Cheers!
