  • Assam is performing well in both Goods and Services Tax (GST) and central excise collections, a senior official informed Business North East on Tuesday.
GST revenue collection in Assam in April 2023 was Rs 1513 crore, which increased to Rs 1895 crore in April 2024, marking a growth of 25 percent in GST collection, ahead of states like Delhi, Chandigarh, UP, West Bengal, etc. Nationwide, GST collection stands at around Rs.1,77,000 crores.
Principal Commissioner of Guwahati GST, Partha Roy Choudhury said, “When we pay GST, we first pay tax. Previously, the effective taxation used to be as high as 32 percent and 35 percent, but today it is 18 percent, 12 percent, and 6 percent. There is no hidden cost in it.”
He also claimed that traders have significantly benefited from the new system, with seamless movement across the country. "All taxes have come under GST, eliminating the cascading effect of taxes. If someone travels from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh, they will get credit, ensuring a free flow of input tax credit."
Assam celebrated the 7th Goods and Services Tax (GST) Day at Tarun Dutta Memorial Hall, GST Bhawan in Machkhowa, Guwahati. The theme for this year was 'Sashakt Vyapar and Samagra Vikash.' The Goods and Services Tax (GST) was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government on July 1, 2017, replacing a complex and fragmented tax structure. GST provided a unified system to simplify compliance and eliminate the cascading effect of older tax structures.
