Why our Leopard 50 spun out of control, mid Atlantic.

- We diagnose why our Leopard 50 spun around out of control during our Atlantic crossing. Just one of the many fails that we experienced during our Atlantic crossing. We handle major navigation equipment, mast and rigging failure. These are issues that you can experience on a Leopard 42 & Leopard 45 as well. In fact, potentially they could happen on a Lagoon catamaran or a Bali catamaran or any yacht. So, if you are planning to go to an upcoming boat show… Especially to see a Leopard catamaran, remember to speak to your yacht broker because most of these are known issues, so we hope this can help you avoid drama and disaster during your ocean crossing.
nice to see nothing changes with the efforts by Leopard to address build issues. it wont take long for the new orders to dry up
If you haven't been following Travel Sketch, I suggest you reach out to them or watch some of their videos. They have had the same problems as you are experiencing but they have found the problem. Its all got to do with wiring damage in the mast. They have been on the hard in Trinidad for over a year with a multitude of issues on their Leopard and their warranty claims are being very poorly handled. From the time of sea trials in Cape Town and taking possession of their Leopard, they have had endless problems caused by either poor workmanship and or by design flaws. DO not by a Leopard.
From 'Travel Sketch' (Leopard 45).
"When you are told by the manufacturer: 1) We've never seen this before; 2) This is normal wear and tear, you know you being 'bullshitted' by experts!"
😉
Gday Guys, we stumbled across your channel by accident but Binge watched them all in a Row 😢 as we Have/Had such high hopes of one day owning a new Beautiful Leopard 🐆⛵ as we Absolutely Love there layout and design but we just can't bring ourselves to spend our Hard Earned savings on such a Poorly constructed Dream Vessel that both yourselves, Sketch fund Plenty of others have been lumped with 😢.
We wish you all the best and Thank you for sharing your unbiased and honesty in your videos.
Cheers Mick & Nikki 🇦🇺
Me too, I was seriously looking at a Leopard - *Hell NO* is the answer now.
There is literally no excuse for that mast. Absolutely pathetic. If they want to keep pulling this BS Robertson and Caine shouldn't be building boats. How can a mast get through QC without conduit down the length of it?
The more I watch people fixing their new boats, the happier I am fixing my old house.
At 20:00 you're believing the plastic conduit was drilled intentionally. I don't think that is the case. It is more likely that It has been ground down by repeatedly rubbing against the mandrel heads of the rivets protruding inside the mast.
It's not intentional it's bad practice again, again and again.
Yeah so I have hundreds of hours of motoring on my engines, devaluing them, because my Raymarine system totally shat out on the way up from Cape Town to Gibraltar due to incompetent installation and similar mast issues. What have I got for that particular wear and tear so far? Nothing. Absolute credit to Raymarine for helping fix it all for free with some self help in Gibraltar. The factory hasn't sent me a cent for my prematurely worn engines. Travelopia the broker has committed to help fix my issues but that's back to what I paid for isn't it. Who pays for the unnecessary wear and tear and loss of time? Where is the shipbuilder Robertson and Caine in all this with guarantees of QC improvement and oversight?
Are you experiencing ptsd watching this? They obviously haven’t learned anything from your experience. I’m sure there must be more similar cases.

@@liongod1000 it’s heartbreaking. Most people don’t have this kind of spare cash to buy a boat, and have to save, sell everything, and do what they can to make a dream a reality. To find out that they have bought something that is not built to the quality you were expecting, and then find yourself for months on the hard, with all the stress that goes with it … I feel for anyone in this position.
For it to happen once, a manufacturer could get away with it. When it becomes a trend then consumers won’t buy. They actually don’t deserve consumers trust
@@vickysymonds7014 Well said
Great to have all this conduit in the mast protecting the cables. Did I miss how the conduits are attached to the inner mast. Are they still free to oscillate in the mast which will not be quiet and they will wear through when in contact with rivits and other hostile objects I believe this fix has a sell by date.
The conduit in the middle of the mast was probably for the sharp steps where the mast halves slide over the joining piece. The conduit has released from it's rivets to that joining piece, and then ground itself against those rivets. Basically wasn't riveted properly.
The lesson is Don’t TOUCH A NEW LEOPARD!!!
Unfortunately you bought a new Leopard. I follow Travel Sketch TH-cam channel. Wish you all the best.
The sadest part is that R&C warranty "efforts" are borderline scam. Not the brightest idea to disgruntle existing customers when trying to sell new boats IMO
I want to suggest that Leopard opens a full time serice centre with spare parts, in Granada. Then they can deal with the problems directly and feedback to Cape Town. This will be a great way of restoring buyer confidence again.
Best of luck!
I think it was dangerous advice for Leopard to ask you to move the boat (without instruments) to another place for repairs to make the cost cheaper for them. Sailing without instruments in the modern world makes no sense to me. My background is aviation safety, so I am biased in this regard.
Who is responsible for these garbage code zero end brackets? Mine nearly wore through as well and was replaced by us. Express post an upgrade to owners, come on anyone can do better than that.
Your conduit issues were virtually the same as another Leopard 45, documented in the TH-cam channel “Travel Sketch”. Also sailing from SA across the Atlantic. Sounds like you are having many of the same issues.
At least the windows did not nearly fall out, maybe check the hull for de-lamination!
Their was another couple who are fighting the same thing with their mast leopard eventually sent them a new mast , pvc condition was drill threw and broke all cables
That mast is abominable
3:00 Your beautiful family has the same look on their faces as mine when explaining boat problems 😂
Sounds like the same issues as Travel Sketch channel
Hi Family, so the conduits suppose to attach to the mast by sliding over those aluminium lips is that right. Stay strong, this is ur dream, keep fighting, ur all amazingly stoic and brave, much respect🇦🇺🌈
Did you inspect the cables and wiring where the conduit had holes in it? I would look carefully for cut insulation in these areas.
The bulk of these boats are transported to the med for charter i believe. Not so many actually sailed across. Now we know.....
Marina queens and anchoring platforms
Is it rivet backs on mast conduit stripping insulation and causing faults.
I have seen a bit of your videos and I understand that this is a tragic situation for you, but for me it is becoming comical. Let's hope things work out in the end and that you don't give up in the meantime.
All these issues are a consequence of poor workmanship. Has the skills of the workers diminished? This would suggest so!

OMG, wind sender dies, captain freaks out lol
That masthead hardware looks like it came off a daysailer.
Can you secure the d ring not to undo,
That metal is way undersized (thickness) for a 50 foot catamaran. So sorry you bought a Leopard catamaran.
Sorry guys, I can't watch this, it's so typical it makes me cross. Good luck sort it out and to hell with the builders.
is that your daughter? hopefully she cheers up and realizes hanging out with mom and dad on a new cat in the caribbean is about as good as life could be
Normally manufacturers gradually improve their products as the years go by but since this company is now owned by some global finance company, they seem to only care about profits. Cutting corners, make it cheaply, charge big money.
When ever a representative for any product tells you its the first time they dealing with a problem, spit in their face, they simply deserve no better response. Can’t say I have not heard any of these responses, been there and heard it all. While Scott ran the show more than a decade ago and every vessel was delivered on its bottom around the world, the brand coped with blue water. Ask a Toyota owner if they ever experience warranty problems, they build them strictly to a procedure and proudly standby the product….PERIOD.

There's a movie called "Cocaine Bear" - about what happens when a bear finds Cocaine and consumes it.
As I see more and more videos about the shit show called "Leopard Catamarans - Roberts & Caine" - I begin to think that Leopard/R&C is employing monkeys on crack.
That was a great movie 🤣🇦🇺
Like and share far and wide. Leopard needs to be punished for this.
I hope I'm not getting this assumption wrong but you sound South African and if so why wouldn't you buy one of those beautiful Balance cats, especially considering these leopards have a very bad name build quality wise and after sales service. I'm sure you've probably seen the South African fella and his wife who was sailing around in a beautiful bullet proof Balance cat which was around 62 foot if I remember correctly. He sailed it to the US to be sold and I would've snapped that second hand cat up in an instant. It had been well looked after, it was run in so to speak and had the miles on the board and proof that it is a well built, well performing ocean cruiser
The Leopard has spots, bad spots!
Wow it looks a horrible job done by one of the well-known manufacturer in boat building industry this is the reason why I hate modern production line sailing vessels which isn’t worth for millions . I like old products or prototype wired boats 🤓 good job guys revealing the truth about the issues that you’re facing with ….
Good luck and cheers 🥂
That’s a terrible design of the in mast conduit fastenings . Simply laziness and no apparent QC procedures.
Perfect example of how much people have become dependent on electronics and don’t even know the basics of navigating without them.
How do you navigate a catamaran (!) without wind readings? You must be kidding. Or you don‘t know the basics of catamarans..
Music is very loud and thus, annoying.
What the hell is going on with Leopard? Bloody shoddy workmanship and build.
Those guys should take the boat back to Leopard and receive the money back or a new boat. But who will want back a new Leopard. Leopard should do an investigation on this boat and find out who work on it. It is damaging company image. It is a shame because they look very nice but they are poorly build.
name and shame
Buying a leopard in cape town...is the same as to buy a VW..made in Mexico
What value do the fiddles playing in the background add. Nerve wrecking! 🤬
These Cats are comfortable but at a cost . All those fancy systems fail and you end up spending all your time fixing . For example 4 heads= 4 times as many busted heads .
I will stick with my 42 year old boat
You know, sailors sailed the oceans for hundreds of years without wind instruments. Just some tell tales, and knowledge of sailing.
Ja how much sea time do you guys have
Hope you never see yourself in a big storm😢
Exactly! and perhaps also a chart, a sextant, and if you really want to use tech, a couple of battery powered hand-held GS units. If you have to look at an an electronic navigation system to decide how to set the sails then you should not be crossing an ocean.
You cant go to the shop without navigation and you talking navigate the Atlantic without wind instruments. You are pathetic my friend
And you reef how exactly? By ‚feeling‘? Do you know how to sail a catamaran?
@@maxx9384 reef how? Shortening the main. Lower the main, tighten and secure the reefing line (at either 1, 2, or 3rd reefing point if you have 3) and secure the reefing line. Raise the main until the luff is tight and secure the halyard. Have done this many times. Yes, I know how to sail a catamaran. The head sail can be reefed by furling it. Typically to one of the reefing marks on the sail. Have sailed several, including a 58’ Leopard on a 1,200 mile trip. Do you need more detail or is that sufficient?
Quality is really going downhill at leopard.
Yea I believe lepord will be going out of business or changing hands soon because there's thousands of lepords out there that are having trouble with everything ,very bad workmanship do not buy a lepord boat
I'm sorry you bought a Leopard, there's been nothing but horror stories from Leopard owners for a couple of years now.
This also shows how lacking modern "sailors" or yachties are today. The total reliance on electronic gadgets and nav equipment is not just insane it's dangerous.
Personally I believe it should be international law that any person who intends to captain a boat in blue water should be trained in old school navigation, weather patterns, cloud formations, natural wind indicators. Be a true yachtsman before you become a modern day lazy sailor.
audio is too faint.
