  • I thought that Ken Boothe's "Feel Good" was the original here, but apparently it was a response to the popular "Hold Them" by Roy Shirley, that was one of the first cuts recorded by producer Joe Gibbs. For this run, I play both of those, followed by another take with Roy Shirley for Lloyd Charmers and a later Big Youth relick.
Feel Good (Hold Them): Ken Boothe
    Feel The Dub: Sound Dimension
    Hold Them: Roy Shirley
The Great Roy Shirley, One Two, Three, Plus One (Medley): Roy Shirley
    Rum Rhythm: Shirley & Charmers
    Johnny Reggae: Big Youth
    Johnny Reggae Version: Big Youth
Buck And The Preacher: I Roy
    Johnny Reggae: Big Youth

Was WELL-Fortunate to see Roy Shirley's final stage show, at the SNWMF, 2008. The High Priest died the following month, Rest In Power.

This is the mix (love Roy Shirley) that first brought me to your amazing world where riddim stories are told using the hardest hitting bass lines ever! Thank you, Algoriddim!

let me put this thing straight my dad Roy shirley wrote and produced it first released on Jo Gibbs released in Jamaica as he wasn't in England yet. label but bunny lee who was in England brought up Ken booth and released it in England so when my father came up with the song it was already released. there is history behind what happened next but too say my dad did get back the song but the damage had already been done. but its ROY SHIRLEYS song written by him produced by him. Ken has since apologized to me for the incident. and in them days it was what t was.

Your father is the late, great Roy Shirley? Wow, I'm not even sure what to say. He is one of my all-time favorite vocalists--of any genre. If someone asked me to define "sing your heart out", I would play them Roy Shirley.

@@krinrush5532 I am 39 in the US, and I remember about 17 years ago I heard "Hold Them" for the first time. Yes, I am fairly certain about the year. I was transfixed, "Who is that singing like that and how do I hear it again?" He remains still one of my favorite vocalists of any genre of music--such versatility, and so compelling! When I hear him sing "feel good", I don't have much of a choice in the matter. In fact, I put this on this morning because I needed to hear it. Just wanted to pay my respect. All the best, --Blair

the third one, though (from the technical point of view is the same ''groove''. but not sounding like from any of the ''band-track session that created the basid for the others... )

not sure what the constant hand on deck was about.
yeh, was sir joe's song, production-wise... and pretty much how good he was and how a lot of the musicians and singers (most jamaican bands of the time actually being jamaican-ified doo-wop trios and quartets. hence ''toots * the maytals''... they were singers... and the studio actual bands just knocked out ''band tracks'' that were used in almost all the singing stuff till the next one took hold) got on with him and liked him, so Perry got the hump and chucked him.
Incidentally, and was covered in two forms by The Fall, ''Why are people Grudgeful'' from the Gibbs camp waS ABOUT pERRY BEING LIKE THAT...
aNYWAY.. yehhhhh gIBBS IS really GOOD.
Stax did the same in the States. The main studio band for them being Booker T & the MG's.
    Was same

(From my point of view, it'd be amazing to get access to some of those band tracks for the sake of learning, as i LOVE all forms of dance-worthy R&B, including early reggae styles from bluebeat (ish) through to when the Wailers kicked in with Island records.. afetr that it gerts pretty pantsy and production-blingy and BORING....
