I always felt like a bit of an outsider in my teens ‘cause most of my friends were jammin’ to Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Cypress Hill, etc. I was too, but also played the HELL out of Professor Longhair’s albums. The greatest pleasure of my life was being young in New Orleans and being there when the Fess . Alllen Toussaint, Dr John and The Nevilles were creating the modern Nawlins groove in the ear;y Seventies. Their soul changed my musical groove forever. I'm so grateful and I was so lucky. I'm sorry theyre all gone. But the music will keep getting rediscovered generation after generation
Don’t forget Booker..playing at The Leaf and course Earl King playing over at Jed’s...this was before the guys bought the 501 Club and turned it into Tips.. When the Nevilles were mostly still the Meters ...and of course Allen

Talkin Bout Nawlins - In ‘87 I was lucky enough catch Snooks at Jazz and Heritage. I never forgot that weekend there were so many other artists too, but Snooks, Terrence Simien, and all the amazing costumes and dancing just blew my mind wide open. Snooks really was the realest deal.
That was just a brilliant video. I saw the prof several times back in the day, and there was never anybody as good to capture what he was all about than Allen Toussaint.
It’s lucky that fess was filmed with dr John and the meters otherwise there would be little film of him ,which is tragic because he was such an important figure in American music
Would not know anything about Professor Longhair except my wife 20+ years ago was in a rhythm and blues band that was being "courted" by Alligator Records. Alligator was the label that Crawfish Fiesta was on and somehow the name of Professor Longhair came up because the piano player was from New Orleans and made comment about Alligator and "Fess" Well one thing led to another and we got a copy (cassette!) of the recording. I've now downloaded the recording and it is a regular on my playlist. It is a damn shame he isn't better known. But bring his name up around New Orleanians and you'll have a friend for life.
Allen, thank you so much, you always kept that N'Awlinz groove alive. You and Fats are gone now; maybe Doctor John, Huey Smith, and other keepers of the flame may keep the torch burning...
A true Southern gentleman with a talent that endures after his passing. Thanks to Elvis Costello & others who got him to perform more in his later years. I am so glad to have seen him perform 'live' and also to see his legacy live on as a gem in the world of music! P.S. watch the film "Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together"!!!
Allen is one of those guys I would rather hear playing his songs alone on the piano than the fully produced studio records with a full band backing him. Well, basically I feel that way about every New Orleans piano professor!
