This week, we're bringing you a special show all about hummus, a tasty spread made from ground chickpeas. Believe it or not, this dish is charged with cultural significance, with many debates in the Middle East over who invented it. We're joined by Dan Alexander, a Franco-Israeli chief editor and designer, who's just published "On the Hummus Route". He tells us more about this unusual source of tension, but also of sharing in the region.

to be fair, what DOESN’T cause tension in the middle east

  • @shodan658

It's sad that we argue over who created Hummus without realizing that almost every ethnicity in the middle-east including both Jews and Arabs have contributed in their own ways to make the dish into what it is today.
    Regards from Jordan!

@@RBlindWarlockR Yeah you are right, it's meant to be sensationalist, entertaining and divisive on purpose, unfortunately.

Glad to share the magic of hummus with the entire world. Same as the Italians share pizza and pasta. The problem is akin to someone from let's say for example Cambodia claiming that the pizza is theirs. Hummus is part of our cultural identity. The identity of the Levant. Syria, Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon is the same history and culture. Israel on the other hand is an artificial construct. They are European and have neither history nor cultural claim in our region. To us, it is like waking up in a nightmare and finding you have a stranger sharing your bed with you and claiming he or she has the right to wedge themselves in your life and claim your food as theirs. Hummus is not controversial nor political. Just get the hell out of our bed and we will be glad to invite you for dinner and you can have all the hummus you want.

The jews are natives of the middle east, they are direct decedent's of Abraham, to say they are of European decent is a pure lie.

@@anon457 that was 2000 years ago, since the roman expulsion of jews, everything changed. Look at their DNA its literally european. Im not saying they're not jews, they are, just from different parts of the world. There are native jews in the levant, doesnt mean you kick someone just because you want their land or property.

As a vegan, hummus and pine nuts make the best sauce/topping on Earth. With the right recipe, it can actually replace cheese! The only close competitors are proper Guacamole and Salsa.

I worked for a couple of years in the Middle East but was a fan of hummus way before that. By now though, like sushi and pizza, hummus is a globalized dish.

Watching this while eating spicy hummus (the reason why I searched for a vid like this). I work in a production factory that specializes in hummus and we have all sorts of hummus and I often get to take lots of hummus with me. For now my favorite would be sunseed hummus and after that olive hummus flavored with basil.

As a non-Arab American I found this story very well presented and absolutely absorbing. Here in the western USA, the only hummus readily available is the Sabra brand and I will bet true connoisseurs would balk at its authenticity. Dan Alexander was really quite charming. Thanks to all involved for posting.

there are other brands available. i am eating a different brand now. way better than sabra. it just depends what kind of grocery store you go to. if you go yo a general big box grocery store you probably won’t have a massive selection
