I can replay the interactions with my dad and see all the places where I've done things wrong. It isn't easy to let go of the child-parent relationship and it is so hard to get it right. I did hear one thing that will help me with my mom. She has said that she needs to go slower with information and I'm trying not to overwhelm her and slow down, listen more. She is so reasonable whereas my relationship with my dad has always been difficult. everything just makes me so sad

As if one could not get better this one is on the list as most excellent. I appreciate the level of engagement of this webinar. Providing examples, role play and questions are effective learning strategies. I can go from this webinar to my mom with “what to do when she asks the same question or comments over and over”. I wish, PCP, neurologist, Alzheimer’s groups, and memory care living communities could work as a team with caregivers and family members on a timeline. Thank you to all involved.

This was so helpful and so terrifying (for me) at the same time. I feel like I'm both people...forgetting words while I talk and trying not to be frustrated and also trying to be as gentle as Alejandro to the person with whom I don't seem to be able to have satisfying conversations anymore. Thank you for trying to teach us these things. I only wish I had watched this years ago and had learned how to properly interact with my poor mom.

My mother in law was diagnosed 3 years ago and unfortunately it became too unsafe for her to stay at home by herself. We moved her into a wonderful group home earlier this year and I visit her almost every day. I felt so lost as I navigated through some of the very same scenarios in this webinar. I’m caring for a wonderful lady & I so enjoy time with her. We have the same conversation(s) every day. She intro’s her dog to me & tells me about her. We talk about her family & she asks me about my family, where I live... She intro’s some of hers. Occasionally, she remembers something from before.
I wish she were suddenly healed, for her, but I love her as she is. She is someone from my local church who did help raise me. That’s the way I think of all of our clients. They were there & helped raise us. Maybe that particular person wasn’t in my life, but in general these people/this generation are the ones that raised us all, taught us what was right & wrong & loved us despite all our failings.
I realize that didn’t happen for everyone & it makes my heart hurt when I hear those stories, but we must keep going & keep loving them the way they should’ve loved their children, because that’s what God wants us to do.

I've been binge watching your videos in hopes that we can help our mom. I wish someone had been able to teach these things when I was a CNA at several nursing homes years ago.
Mom keeps mentioning both that she doesn't understand why she's so tired all the time & that she knows she has memory problems but doesn't understand why??
Should we remind her that she has dementia, when it's going to upset her, try to change the subject, or what???😢
Thanks again Teepa & your great crew; you are all great!!!❤

Hi, @tandiparent1906! Thanks for binge watching our videos and we're glad that are wanting to learn more about how to help your mom. Can I ask what good would it do to remind her that she has dementia? If you think the answer is no, then I wonder what would happen if you just went along with her in whatever she's talking about and then try to ask question or find another thing to do or try. I also wonder if you would be interested in chatting with someone about this and other situations. We offer a free 30-minute consultation with a member of our team. Good question @jkramer8468! I hate to say, "it depends" What we say next depends on where we are, how well we know Teepa, what we think she might want to try. This technique of "Ooo, hey Teepa" is a way for both of us to pause and respond instead of reacting so that we can have a better interaction. My mother in law is between a diamond and an emerald. She has help in the home from 5-8 every night. We don't live with her.
If we happen to go there at that time she keeps saying "that girl is here for 3 hours, that's too long, we don't need somebody (it's supposed to really be for her husband (who is 95, she is 86) for that long...what does she do anyway, she just sits there." This is not true, she helps to get dinner, she gives him a shower(,she takes care of her personal care fine right now). She doesn't remember this and she was the type anyway to not want people in the house she doesn't know. She gets really fiesty about this and gets increasingly upset....HOW do we calm her down and make her see this CNA is so nice and helpful?
Also the fact that she wants to go home etc...won't she forget all about the letter the next day and you'd have to tell her all over gain?

My gal keeps repeating stories that according to her son, are not true. Emotional memories.
For example, her deceased husband's affair. And the abusive nuns at the Catholic school. How her Mother mistreated her.
