Climbing Mentok Kangri (6262 m) and Trekking Rumtse to Tso Moriri - Ladakh, India

  • As part of our trip to Ladakh, India Clay and I head out on a 10 Day trek from Rumste to Tso Moriri, with a grand finale of a climb up Mentok Kangri at 6262 m. I finished my climb at the place where our guide said was the top (and according to our research, the place where most people are brought), and Clay went up to Mentok I at 6262 m.
    This time, we brought along a whole entourage including a mountaineering guide, a cook, a poney man, and five ponies. We even had a toilet tent! Wild East Adventures organized our trip, and we'd definitely recommend them. Their website isn't working, but that doesn't matter because we highly recommend planning a trip like this once you get to Ladakh. It will take them a few days to get things organized, but you can shop around and get a feel for who is honest.
    The trek crossed the Chanthang Plateau, part of the Tibetan Plateau. The Changpa people are a seminomadic Tibetan people. They herd sheep, pashmina goats (used to make the famous pashmina shawls), yaks, donkeys, and ponies.
    The most common wildlife (by far) that we spotted was the kiang, or wild ass. One of the ponies on our team was half kiang.

    What an amazing trip! I couldn't even imagine climbing up to 6200 ft. The tallest I've climbed so far is only about 2500ft. I didn't even realize how harsh the climate was til this video. Congratulations on completing your hike. Some beautiful views for sure. -ATB Adam 🐢

      More amazing is it's actually 6,200 meters or a little more than 20,000 feet. I thought my climb last year was high at 13,200 feet!

    You have some stunning footage! Love the little horse running around near the 5th night footage or so! That would be quite the hike. I have never done anything remotely like that, or even close to that elevation! I hear that really kills the energy hiking at that height! Hope that nose is feeling better! You should be proud to complete such a trek!

      It's hard to understand my notes, but it looks like R 140 000 for the both of us. It cost quite a bit because we needed a mountaineering guide for all 10 days even though we only climbed for only one.

    • @BackpackerDiaries
      @BackpackerDiaries 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you are not using the sound zoom H 1

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wasn't using anything for this, actually. I lugged my H1 around, but never wanted to get it out. Doing anything was too exhausting. I should have, though. The wind was so bad that very little outdoor footage had usable audio. Perhaps you are seeing my necklace or some zipper or drawstring contraption? I do have a lavier mic (I have no idea what brand), but rarely use it. I found that if I'm moving, I end up with a lot of feedback. I usually use a gorilla pod to attach the H1 to my tripod or selfie stick. I don't have any audio input on my camera, so I sync up the sound separately. I think I would do that now even if I did have audio input so I have backup when something fails.

    Amazing adventure. and good call on sitting that one out. Probably some altitude sickness, and that could have gotten worse. But definitely looks like an amazing trip with an amazing climb. Worth having the people bring you up?

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean our entourage? We needed to have the guide. It was too technical for me, and neither of us would have found the route in the dark. Guides don't usually work without a cook, and we couldn't have gotten a cook without a pony man because they need a lot of gear.

    • @TheOtterOutdoorsman
      @TheOtterOutdoorsman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that was the the word I was looking for (got interrupted a few times while watching and forgot what you called them). Plus it's definitely nice to have a camp cook, having food especially when you get back (and tea, which reminds me I need to take care of find a tea to send). Were they expensive to hire?

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was. I was going to say (I was also getting interrupted), that we did another 6000 m peak after without a guide, and I think I enjoyed it a lot more. There was a lot bigger sense of accomplishment without a guide.

      I need to get back in shape and try and do a (small) mountain at some point. Though other times I like my "slow" lumbering pace that drives some of my friends crazy. I get to see more (well not places... things)

    Talk about an amazing, enduring, remote, high-altitude trek all captured so beautifully. What an adventure to see Mentok 1 and 2 and congratulations to Clay for making up Mentok 1. That sunrise you shared that morning was just breath-taking. Even though the altitude was exhausting, the whole region was just so unspoiled and beautiful. Who wouldn't love to experience this kind of adventure at least once in their lives?

    how much The guide cost Of Base camp - Mantok kangri ?

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean if you were to start at Tso Moriri? I don't know what the cost would be. If it was just two people, maybe 26,000 rupees for a guide, ponies, and cook? If you found a group that was going, you'd pay a lot less. Maybe look at what some of the tour companies are offering online to get a good idea, then when you get to Leh, you should be able to find the trip for less. Not many guides will want to go without ponies or a cook, but you might be able to find someone. That would save a lot of money.

    What a hike and final climb! Pretty amazing. except the toilet :) I had no idea about those holes - you said it was for baby goats to keep them warm? Sorry for a sunburn (I am always like a red pig so I can imagine :) Guys, how the hell did you get the guitar there ??? :) OK, you don't have to answer, maybe I will figure it our from your older videos. Anyway, congrats to Clay to stand on Mentok I and to you as well to make it almost there. Well, also Mentok, who cares about the numbers right ? :) I am kidding, I know you probably wanted to be there with him. Guys I enjoyed your adventure so much and I am glad you make these short films for us. Will watch more. thanks!!!!

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clay bought a guitar from some guy on the street. It was actually a pretty good one. Then he sold it to our hotel manager and used the money to buy a junky little one. Then he gave our pony man his best puppy dog eyes to let him put it on a pony. He ended up managing to get it onto out various planes home with no case. It's now hanging on the wall as a fun souvenir. The guitar ended up making us a lot of friends, actually. Clay once brought a dulcimer on a backpacking trip. It's hard to separate him from his instruments. I don't really feel too bad about not going all the way. Peak bagging is Clay's thing. I just like being in the mountains.

      We went in early Late January. I can't find the exact numbers. My notes in my journal are a mess, but it was around r100,000. It would have been quite a bit cheaper if we had found someone else wanting to do the same trek with us, or if we had chosen to do just the climb from Tso Moriri.

    • @chaseyourdreamsstories
      @chaseyourdreamsstories 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nerding for Nature - The Last Grownup in the Woods thanks a lot :))) any idea how much the climb from tso moriri would cost and the number of days to trek up and back?

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No sorry, I don't think we got quotes on that. The base camp is only a few hours from Tso Moriri so you could do it in 2 days, but you'd need time to acclimatize first. Maybe another Stok Kangri ascent? It's about a day's drive each way from Leh too. My guess would be about a third the price for two people. Less if you have a bigger group. Chances are you can get a deal in Leh by joining up with another group. You've been to Ladakh so you probably know the drill. One piece of advice: don't let them try to tell you that that little subpeak is Stok Kangri II. A few other videos and blogs we read had their guides take them there and call it Stok Kangri II or III when it clearly is not a peak. I suspect it has something to do with permits. Also, I would say it was less exhausting than Stok Kangri. It was more technical, but shorter. I also had a cold when I did Stok Kangri though.

What an awesome vista th-cam.com/video/af7Sj7j9BNA/w-d-xo.html As you say it was even more fascinating walking through the lake - well not exactly through it but you get my drift. Brilliant Carley - now that was a vista th-cam.com/video/af7Sj7j9BNA/w-d-xo.html ...all the best. Mark
