    VANILLA ICE FACTS
-An American rapper, actor, and television host.
-Born Robert Matthew Van Winkle, Halloween 1967, Dallas TX (Raised in both Texas and South Florida).
-Released his debut album “Hooked” in 1989, later reformatted under the title “To the Extreme” and re-released under new record label SBK Records (an EMI Group).
    - “To the Extreme” was the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all time and contained best-known hits “Ice Ice Baby” and a cover of “Play that Funky Music”.
-Vanilla Ice later regretted his arrangements with SBK, which paid him to adopt a more commercial appearance and published fabricated biographical information without his knowledge.
-After a massive image change, soundtrack appearances, and a live album he dropped his second studio album “Mind Blowin’” which saw a massive drop in popularity for him.
-Several other less mainstream albums he released didn’t break the charts or get much airplay but he gained a loyal underground following.
-In 2009 he hosted a TV show on the DIY network title “The Vanilla Ice Project” and his latest album, “WTF - Wisdom, Tenacity & Focus” was released in 2011.
    ICE ICE BABY SONG FACTS
-Based on the bassline of “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie, who did not receive songwriting credit or royalties until after it became a hit.
-First released as the B-side to his cover of “Play that Funky Music” but it was not successful until DJ Daivd Morales played “Ice Ice Baby” instead, it began to gain success.
-It was the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard Hot 100.
-Outside of the US, the song topped the charts in Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, and the UK thus helping diversify hip hop by introducing it to a mainstream audience.

I was 17 years old when this song came out... and yes, this was the shit!!! I was doing the runnin' man to this song for a couple years 🤣. Regardless of how much people clown the song, it was, is and always will be a hit.
FYI: Many reactors in the video have heard the chorus, some have heard the song but have not seen the video, and some have never heard of it at all. This song was hard to find people who have never heard some part of it before.
What I learned: I certainly have never heard the background "mmmmhmmm" at 6:00 before making this compilation. Interesting.
I HIGHLY recommend: Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine - th-cam.com/video/WQk0xTwZumo/w-d-xo.html

I was about to graduate high school when this was released. It was a major hit and Vanilla even did a movie, and dated Madonna for a short time. Why did people start to hate on him? Simple. At this time, MC Hammer had just had his huge album 'Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'em'. With 'You can't Touch This' ruling the airwaves. Vanilla made the unfortunate comment that he was a better dancer than MC Hammer, and then the hate started to pile drive his career. Vanilla went on the Arsenio Hall show, and Arsenio called him out on it, Vanilla denied he ever made that comment. Arsenio pressed him pretty hard (plus he was close to MC Hammer) and it was a horrible spectacle. But take a moment and listen to Vanilla's rock version of this song. I, personally, like it better. Wow, so much time has passed, and now at 51 years old, I look back and still stand by my comment in 1990 'When would a Ford 5.0 make someone driving a Lamborghini jealous??' Lmao 🤣

They "happily endorsed" because they were making money from it. From Wiki: "After representatives for Queen and Bowie threatened a copyright infringement suit against him, the matter was settled out of court, with Van Winkle being required to pay financial recompense to the original artists. Bowie and all members of Queen were also given songwriting credit for the sample". The story goes that when Fred first heard it he laughed - then got straight on to his lawyer.

I wish he could see this. He caught so much flak from the critics. They were relentless. He also took a lot of heat for sampling without Bowie's permission, but this was a well liked song by millions. He should have gone on to be something bigger. It would be great if he could see how a younger generation likes it as much as those who did in the 90s.

I'm hoping he does know... lol. I think a couple of things didn't go quite the way they should have... his record company for one, didn't do him ANY favors. Regardless, I have no shame in saying, I have thought this was a great song since the first time I heard it. Vanilla Ice is, after all, a human being. I always keep that label at the forefront of my thoughts before any of the others when at all possible. I wasn't "there" to know all the details of him, the song, or the situation behind the song. It's just a good song and I can't see anyone else doing this song but him.

I dont know why so many have always dissed him and this song. Everyone hated on him then busted moves at the club everytime it was played while singing every word. Then the whole controversy of plagiarism claims about the Ice Ice Baby bass line resembling the Under Pressure bass line didnt help. I think its always been a great, fun song. So I love seeing people embrace it. Gotta love the jazz version, great find/call. Thanx so much, Peace btw Jim Carrey does an amazing parody of it.

Ice wasn't that bad lyrically, most of the dislike back in the day is that he was like the definition of clean cut white. Remember he was doing this when most rap was super gritty.

Glad so many of you can appreciate a rap song that is over 30 years old. It stills holds up. The hook was a sample from the band Queen song PRESSURE with singing on that song by Freddy Mercury and guest singer David Bowie. Vanilla Ice was so big back then that he got a backlash of hate. He could have pushed through if he had been able to create some more hit songs like Eminem did years later. Old school rap (Vanilla Ice and RUN DMC) was a more innocent time. The TV show SNL did a great skit on some sweet old rappers having a sing-off with some hard-core new rappers. Look it up on yt.
