    Also, of course Draco recognised Harry! He just pretended he didn't. I believe he wasn't truly a Death Eater by his heart, he was on the wrong side just because of his parents.

    • @unicornmist2105
      @unicornmist2105 5 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      RozzzA exactly, it is also never explicitly stated that Draco is a marked death eater in the books, it is only implied. in the end, I believe Draco’s only aspiration during the war was to avoid disappointing, while also protecting, his family

    • @euphoriapotion2075
      @euphoriapotion2075 5 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      tbh when i was reading this I thought that yes, Draco recognized them but he was just so done by everything: being a Death Eater, having Death Eaters and Voldemort in his house, and having to torture people or whatever he was starting to realize he made a mistake and he was so done with everything that HE DIDN'T CARE if it was Harry or not. So that's why he said "I don't know" because he hoped that he would be left alone and Bellatrix or his father wouldn't make him do anything for Voldemort again and that all of this would blow over soon

    • @misakichan4044
      @misakichan4044 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I agree that he knew. At the end of the day Draco wasn't evil he was just a 2-bit bully.

    • @regulardragon
      @regulardragon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      I believe Draco had a redemption arc in him, but JK didn't really want to explore that. Imo the whole 6th book is Draco realizing his entire belief system was absolute bullshit and trying to deal with the enormity of the mistake his father saddled him with. I do think he absolutely recognized Harry, and didn't want to be the one to condemn him to death. He wasn't ready to die for him, or to commit an act of defiance that big, but he did what he could. As did Narcisa who was absolutely not gonna have her child die for Voldemort's cause. They're Slytherins through and through, and they protect their own.

      RozzzA His mother was right about him. He was a child. He had no idea what he signed up for. Not that he had much of a choise, but I don't think he realised that from the start.

      I've always thought Harry and Ginny's daughter should have been called Ruby - mostly after Hagrid, but also kinda a Gryffindor thing like the rubies in the house points or in Gryffindor's sword. It just ties in so nicely with things Harry and Ginny love and hold dear. I mean, Lily Luna is a great name and all, definitely not the worst Potter-Weasley kid name. But I'd've liked Ruby better.

    i think snape is a brilliantly written character, but i absolutely dislike him. it’s truly incredible how complex his character is the whole way through the series. his backstory (for me) makes his actions understandable, but not redeemable. at the end of the day, being in love with someone doesn’t justify child abuse. so his actions make more sense, but it doesn’t make me like him any more

    • @Casutama
      @Casutama 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Not saying Snape's a good guy at all, but we have no way of knowing if his love for Lily was the only thing to keep him going. I mean, that assumption seems extremely far-fetched, and it never says in the book that he wasn't truly convinced of what he was fighting for in the end, even if he started it for the wrong reasons. That doesn't excuse his behaviour throughout the rest of the series at all, but I don't know where people read all this "Snape is only painted in a positive light because of his love for Lily" stuff - it never says that and, even more importantly, I don't think she intended it to be the case at all.

    • @berniehoe9960
      @berniehoe9960 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Ana Sofia Monteiro is it really for the wrong reasons though? towards the end it's clear that he wasn't fighting just for Lily anymore. Why would he save Lupin during the battle of the seven potters? Why not just give up and defect when Dumbledore told him that Harry needed to die if that was all he was fighting for? By the end, Snape was clearly fighting not just for Lily, but because he believed that Voldemort needed to be stopped and that the Wizarding world needed to be saved from him. Of course that doesn't excuse him being a complete asshole, but he wasn't just doing it for Lily towards the end.

      @@flugsven I understand that point of view. But he never did anything to prove that except for working with Dumbledore. And even then his reasoning is *always* the same which is to take revenge on the person who killed the "love of his life" (quotes because he was kind of a stalker and the love was one-sided). Otherwise he really was just a child abuser who bullied little students and someone so obcessed with a girl he told voldemort to kill Harry and James but let her live, when he knew lily would've preferred to die and save her child. I really just find it impossible to sympathize with a grown man who abuses children he is suppose to be teaching :(

      Emmanuel Okoye True you can say that. But Snape and Pettigrews responsibility in it was basically just to get closer to Voldemort. Yeah Snape only heard half the prophecy but would Snape have had the same emotional guilt if Voldemort decided to kill the Longbottoms..... No he wouldn’t have. And that’s the part where Snape’s character is not redeemable, doing the “right things” for the wrong reasons. And even Lily called him out on his BS when they were at Hogwarts, bullying muggleborns and wanting to join Voldemort’s cause. But that’s the complexity of his character. I think Snape is written beautifully as a character but the dude has selfish tendencies and he seems to not want to take responsibility for his hand in Lily’s death. Rather or not other people are responsible Hell , even Sirius took responsibility for his part in their death and we could argue that it truly wasn’t his fault.

    I think I was a Snape apologist when I was young and first read the series but I pretty much agree with Lily’s view of the character now: he’s a great a character but not a great person.
    I feel like one of the reasons many fans will consider Snape a redeemable and good person is because we formed our opinion of him when we were young and might not have understood the complexities of character. For me, at least, I saw it as Snape was on the evil guy’s side so he’s a bad person, but he’s actually on the good person’s side so he’s a good person. Rather than reading into the complexities of his actions and motivations which I honestly probably couldn’t comprehend when I was little. And then I just held on to those opinions as I got older until the discussions started showing online for me again and I had a chance to reframe my view. That’s how I see that whole debate.

    • @someonerandom8552
      @someonerandom8552 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Tasnim That’s a good point to bring up. When we were young, because of the way it’s framed (especially in the movie) it’s easy to not understand just how messed up the relationship actually is in reality. Because we just didn’t know any better at the time. As a teenager, it’s all or nothing in relationships, media also tends to reinforce that view (looking at you, The Notebook.) When you get a bit older and truly start to understand exactly what Snape and Lily’s relationship entails in the real world, you tend to do a double take and nope out of the situation.

    Draco did regocnise Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Malfoy manor but he just kinda didn't want to say that. I believe he wanted Harry to defeat Voldemort somehow. In the room of requirement he didn't want Crabbe to wreck the room because he might bury the diadem. I think Draco believed that because Harry was looking for the diadem, it was gonna help defeat Voldemort which was true of course. He also shouted a few times that Crabbe and Goyle should not kill Harry. Idk that's just how I've always understood it.

      Lmao Draco was unsure of that was Harry so he didn't say it out of fear of being wrong, not to help Harry. Also he wouldn't know about the Diadem being a Horocrux. He also didn't want them to kill Harry so he could bring him alive to Voldemort and get even more rewarded

    Just thought I’d mention that Rowling definitely planned Snapes backstory from the beginning. It’s been revealed that: “The first thing Snape asks Harry is “Potter! What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?” According to Victorian Flower Language, asphodel is a type of lily meaning ‘My regrets follow you to the grave’ and wormwood means ‘absence’ and also typically symbolized bitter sorrow. If you combined that, it meant ‘I bitterly regret Lily’s death’.” (Found this particular quote in an article on Bustle) which is honestly really f*cking cool.

    10:45 Draco could actually tell it was Harry, he may be a "bad guy" but he isn't a murderer and selling the person out who he knows, could make sure his family aren't killed of by dissapointning the dark lord more and stopping himself from living in fear (as his clearly regretting his life choices lol) isn't a good idea. He mother also likely had similar thoughts but more thinking about her sons safety than her own when she lied about harry being dead.

    Finally!! And avoid the Cursed Child. Seriously. It will ruin everything you love about Harry Potter. And honey, you have no idea. When you started talking about how you were pretty sure certain parts where discussed and planted in earlier books (absolutely yes, that's true. So many things!) and how the series might be better the second time around, it absolutely is. I've read through the whole series a couple dozen times now and I STILL notice things I missed before. Get the Stephen Fry audio books, I'm telling you. Just play it in your headphones while you work or driving in the car, wherever. Totally worth multiple reads. And as always, fantastic review and reading vlog. You're great and I love your view points. I'm so glad you finally finished the series and enjoyed it. Welcome to the best Fandom ever! #HogwartsIsMyHome #ProudSlytherin 🐍⚡
    P.S. I love that even after The Princes Tale you still understand and agree that Snape was a dickhead. But don't get me wrong. I do agree that his character is one of the deepest, most well written and tragically sad characters there has been in literature for a long time. It does explain why and where his attitude came from, but in the end, he was still selfish, self-centered, arrogant, bullying asshole. Like, even behind closed doors with Dumbledore when they were making their plans he was still talking shit about Harry and calling him arrogant like James. Like, really? You're calling HARRY arrogant, Snape? He's a very interesting character. I'll give him that. But I don't think the fact he loved Lily redeems him in any way. He's not purely evil, but he's not good either. I think he deserves some respect for what it is he did, but at the same time. All of it is his own fault. He created his own pain. He had no one to blame but himself, yet he took it all out on Harry and James.

      @@StarKllrr All I said about Cursed Child was that it would ruin everything she loves about Harry Potter. No, I've never read and/or seen the play in its entirety. But I've heard enough about it to know it shouldn't be considered canon in any way. Alot of the content of that play spits in the face of everything we know and love about the original books. The Trolley Witch being some shape-shifting demon with spike fingers and pumpkin pastie hand grenades? Draco CONVENIENTLY having a time turner all along. Ron giving his 14 year old nephew a love potion. Voldemort and Bellatrix having a baby? Albus making out with his aunt and suggesting they have another baby? The way Harry treats his son after everything he experienced growing up with the Dursleys? And that's just a handful of ridiculous plot points of that travesty. I'm not saying the story isn't well written. Maybe it is. I hear that watching the play is a fantastic thing. But the story itself and how it portrays the world and the characters we all know and love? It's sheer idiocy. And I have too much respect for the source material to even want to delve deeper. I'm all set.

    Hi from the future! You're making such a good point about the philosopher's stone that I also thought about recently. It would have been a bit cooler if the thing Voldemort pursued in the first book had always been the resurrection stone... almost same effect for the first year plot, BUT this item would have been around in the universe forever, some more loose ends connecting, more of a wow effect. How we got it, the stone is only a thing in this last book, not entirely a deus ex machina, but still philosophically (haha) feels a long way from Harry's beginning at Hogwarts
