Gotta say something on a tangent John. LOVE that you demonstrated the tone knob using a looper. It's always been puzzling to me why more guitar channels DON'T SEEM to use a looper when fiddling knobs on gear. Loopers guarantee 100% identical playback of a particular section of music - no variations, no playing changes, no pick attack differences, etc, etc, etc....Cheers!
Im shocked no modelling company realized theres a huge hole in the market. You got amps and cabs, you got modellers... Just do what positive grid did? Id instantly buy a tone x amp if it had the same features and a cab. Or a helix amp.
I have one, it's terrific. Use mine with my helix, or a boss gt1000 core. It was 175 quid when I bought it though. Prices have risen a wee bit since. Considering getting another one and going stereo..I will eventually. If you like extremely loud...and don't mind a rugged PA looking wedge speaker with a metal grill.. hey you can't do better. Boss IR2 should be usable. The Hayley FRFR accepts all the inputs. Also has a couple of irs onboard.
Definitey cool but I was hoping it would be much less than the Fender - although the ability to load IRs on the cab itself is very cool. The amp tone knob would probably stay at noon for me, but I could see how it could be useful to others.
Yeah I want to see a version of this with some kind of power tube stage.... Probably you know... power tube/class D combo... Enough tube to kind of finish the emulation on make it feel more like a real amp. Also an effects loop.
That's the "Mesa volume" I think. Mesa has custom pots made specifically for themselves, which give you almost all of the available volume at the first third of their range. That way people think that Mesa is unusually "loud", whereas in reality it just achieves its maximum volume earlier and then the volume doesn't go up much.
Never Too Much is such a vibe haha. I'm in the market for my first FRFR, though i'm not in any rush to buy. I'll see how this is received as more people try them. The fender is still top of my list I think though this may be a contender. *edit just looked at the price. No thanks!
Modelers tend to sound too Hifi, and high Cuts are often necessary to control high frequencies and Presence for playing enjoyment, particularly when playing through Studio Monitoring Headphones. Smart move by IK Multimedia ToneX.
It seems the Amp Tone control is Tonex's shot at Line 6's speaker modeling in the PowerCab. In fact, this basically seems like a PowerCab. Maybe better, a bit cheaper.
Is there a reason you feel that the Laney is better suited towards higher gain? I don’t know anyone that actually owns one, interested in how you feel on it! I’ve seen videos demonstrating a variety of gains and the cleans sounded good so any insight helps. Also do you know if the Fender comes in a 2x12?
@jaredmedina833 The fender still has a very "fender" sound. It has a more full bottom end with the eq set at "flat." The laney is a little closer to a true flat response, and as such, the higher gain stuff seems to tighten up a little better. TH-cams compression doesn't do us any favors with stuff like this, so it's hard to get a good feel for how these things sound in the room. They are both great and you won't be disappointed. If you like fender tube amp sounds, I would give the FR12 the edge over the Laney.
I have the Laney LFR-112 and like it a lot for both cleans and heavier stuff. The key for me was proper EQ’ing in my modeler, e.g. some low and high cuts and other tweaks.
Yeah see the beautiful thing about what Fender did - is they came up with a reasonably priced option that was better than everything else and simple to use while looking amazing. I'm done paying $799 for a speaker - that's too close to the price of a decent tube amp. I could almost buy 2 Fender FR12s for that. Swing, and a miss.
I wrote the same on Henning Pauly's video: if you want an amp in the room and stage volume, why not use your tonex or Stomp via a Line6 Catalyst using the power amp side? You can send an IR via the Catalyst with an XLR connection too, right? What do you think, John?
It is quote surprising how long the industry needed to come up with really usable FRFRs for modelling amps. However, it seems to be an interesting alternative to the Fender cab. Maybe I am going to check it out.
Built in IR loader doesn't make much sense in combination of Tonex pedal or Tonex one, but I guess it can be a neat feature for someone else. I hope they will develop more busking friendly option that can replace Roland!
It's smart to build it with users outside of the ToneX ecosystem in mind. That IR loader opens up a lot of options for older non-IR units like the Line 6 PODs for instance, or even just running amp-in-a-box style distortion pedals
One of these days, a company will come out with a power cab that is actually the entire ecosystem in a box. By that I mean that the ToneX would be built in. Just plug your guitar into the input and go.With a USB port, you would stil lbe able to do everything you do now on a ToneX pedal, except the footswitching. But that could be handled by a remote footswitch, or better yet, MIDI. At around $1000, I think a product like that would do very well. This product has the benefit of appealing to people who already have a modeler/profiler, and it is agnostic about which one you own - this results in probably a larger audience. So from a marketing viewpoint, it makes sense. What will the app do, and will it be wireless or USB connected?
Nah!, for less than the price of that we can get TWO Harley Benton G112A-FR which sound awesome and it's all we need if we already have a modeler with IRs or a ToneX pedal or Helix or Fractal or Kemper, etc.
This looks PDG as I'm currently agonising about going back to amp and pedals as opposed to Pod Go and amp. Trouble is I can't get Pod Go to speak nicely to my amp and it sounds so different live than it does in the studio through my audio interface.
Love the channel, I just would not spend 700 bucks for that.its way too much money lol you could get a marshall dsl 40 and have a tube power amp for your modeler.
Superb, tbh since the tone x came out and saved our bacon 10 shows in to a 45 show run, our kempers and quads we had are all long gone, this can go with our in ear monitor systems and save ao much room and having to worry about monitor engineers doing a poop job
Sounds like you have one of those drummers that think everyone is there to hear him play while other instruments play along side just to accompany them slightly . Lol. Maybe it’s just the room though. 😉
It’s not for me, as I need silence at home and where I play. And I really couldn’t justify that price for what it is. One could build this and do the amp/mic thing(I think it rolls in a subtle low/high pass at the same time) with an eq pedal for 30-50% of what this costs.
The amp tone control does far more than EQ, but I see your point about silence being the opposite of what TONEX CAB features as some of its strength :)
I thought according to Tom b modelers are crap and didn’t you do video on video saying you confirm I am confused you go back and forth ? I think amps can sound crappy if not run properly as well As Modelers can sound great run properly now did they send it to you free? So it’s paid video ? What can you say and cannot say with the agreement with the company?
Am I the only one who thinks FRFR cabs are stupid? Why not just get a high-end PA speaker, it will do everything the FRFR cab does better, and then it will do other stuff too. Like a QSC k12.2. Just me?
AH, cool addition to the competition. TYVM. My room sounds full enough with stereo tiny Headrush's. If I jam with others, they turn into my monitors & I go straight in. Even the old Boomers thought it was a cool rig, because X and above would rather not carry a 60lb amp. XD, HF.
Excellent to see IK entering this field, more competition can only be good. Congratulations on probably being the first to gig one! 🎉
Thanks for the kind words, we really want to make a splash not only for TONEX users but anybody wanting a high-quality and powerful FRFR.
Gotta say something on a tangent John. LOVE that you demonstrated the tone knob using a looper. Yes!!! Beautiful Solo! You rock JNC
I come for the solos's and stay for the solo's. I come back for more solo's...
I would crash a wedding reception just to hear you play :)
I would only go if they have ear plugs
Agree but it might be a little too costly for me 😊to travel to the UK
This is cool, I’d probably stick with the fender fr12 until this comes down in price
Excited to see new options for FRFR come out!
Jesus - that clean breakup sound in the end of the video. So beautiful ❤ And great playing BTW
do you prefer it over the fr12?
For 799, they should include a tonex. You can still get the Harley Benton frfr 112 for 200 quid. Get 2...and a tonex.
Im shocked no modelling company realized theres a huge hole in the market. You got amps and cabs, you got modellers... Just do what positive grid did? Id instantly buy a tone x amp if it had the same features and a cab. Or a helix amp.
Yeah, this is NOT that much better than the Harley or HR.
I was considering getting one of those and using UA Lion or that new Boss IR2. Would that be usable?

@@jimicunningable Don't know about the Harley Benton, but the HR cabs are absolute garbage. So I hope this is better than those.
Yes putting the nacho thru it, sounded great all the way around great gigging.
John, did you use your Tonex pedal for this gig?
Definitey cool but I was hoping it would be much less than the Fender - although the ability to load IRs on the cab itself is very cool. The amp tone knob would probably stay at noon for me, but I could see how it could be useful to others.

I can’t believe technology and all the problems we had in the 90s are being addressed with such detail. It’s a great day to be a guitarist.
Surprised they priced this so high. To me, ToneX is about good quality at a more affordable price.
Did you like this more than the Boss Katana Gen 3 100w Head + Cab you gigged with? Great playing!
Maybe a $800 used tube amp, a few pedals including a cheap IR loader like the TC impulse, might sound better than all that? Still neato though.
Oh c'mon man....just bought an FR-10 on Saturday....LOL. Just kiddin' very happy with the FR-10.
How does this compare to the Fender FRFR which a lot of people have complained about noise issues, is this dead silent?
I have a FR10 from Fender and it is dead silent. I guess this was only an issue with very early speakers.
It is resolved in the later units. I have a silent FR12 here.
The Fender hissed like a menopausal rattle snake. F no, count me out!!!
@@mostlypostie1 likewise
Got my FR-12 hiss fixed under warranty at no cost last year. Very happy with Fender FR speaker and wouldn’t change it.
The Mission Gemini cab also has that amp/mic dial on it to select between either an FRFR cab or amp -in-the-room feel.
Price is a lot more than the Fender FR12 to be competitive they need to be around the same price since its an almost identical clone 🤷♂
It seems the Amp Tone control is Tonex's shot at Line 6's speaker modeling in the PowerCab. In fact, this basically seems like a PowerCab. Maybe better, a bit cheaper.
You should check out the Laney FR. Ive been looking into it and from the videos Ive seen, it sounds pretty good!
I have both, and I like the fender better. The laney might be better for high gain presets, but most of my stuff is typically low gain big 3 sounds.
Is there a reason you feel that the Laney is better suited towards higher gain? I don’t know anyone that actually owns one, interested in how you feel on it! I’ve seen videos demonstrating a variety of gains and the cleans sounded good so any insight helps.

I'd be curious to see how it compares to the Fenders. Good to see more options anyway.

It certainly sounds like one of the better FRFR speakers out there. Then again, at that price, you'd expect it to stand out from the crowd.
hey, my back room is filling up trying to keep up with all this gear acquisition
I consider the Tonex a bargain unit and I was hoping this cab would be cheaper.
