The instrumental in the middle of the song wasn't planned, it was so Vince could pull himself back together to sing again. He sort of recentered himself by playing the guitar for a bit. Patty is great. She is also a first cousin to greats Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle.

I have always loved Patty Loveless, her voice is incredible. But the first time I ever saw this video, I gained a whole new respect for that lady. What you just watched is one of the most emotional things I’ve ever witnessed. She & Vince are close friends, she calls him her brother. They harmonize like nobody else can, and at that Funeral, Vince was so torn up he couldn’t get through it, and what did Patty do? She stepped up and made it incredible! My opinion of course, but I think all the young little chicks that think they can sing these days need to bow down to the likes of Patty Loveless. If you really want to hear what she can do vocally, check out her LIVE version of “You’ll never leave Harlan alive”!

My ex-husband (a musician) always said he wanted me to remember to play this at his funeral and I never got it because I wasn’t a big country music fan, even though I did like Vince Gill. Vince Gill and George Jones were good friends. I am astonished that he even made it through this song at all, considering he was singing it at his good friend's funeral. Of course, he would have been mourning the loss of a country music legend and a GREAT singer even if he had not been a personal friend but add to that the fact that this legend was his good friend, and he just absolutely could not hold it together. Props to Patty Loveless for being so supportive of him. I love this song. I had it played at my husband's funeral when he died almost 13 years ago.

    • @seanscanlon9067
      @seanscanlon9067 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The original version was written in tribute to another of Vince's heroes, Keith Whitley:
      I know your life
      On earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You were no stranger to the rain
Oh, how we cried the day you left us
We gathered 'round your grave to grieve
Wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing
I'm No Stranger To the Rain is a Keith Whitley song and he has issues with alcohol, but the first verse is also relevant to Vince's older step-brother Bob Coen, who was involved in a fatal car accident when he was 22 years old that led to him being in a coma for three months when Vince was only 11 years of age at the time.
When he woke up from the coma, his brain was damaged beyond medical repair and it led to him exiling himself from family and friends until his eventual death in 1993, after which Vince wrote this song in tribute to him.

Somethin that most folks don't know or realize is that, it's tough to hide your own emotions when you're on the stage in front of hundreds or thousands of people. Especially when it's someone that ya looked up to or was just very close to. It don't matter who ya are or the person that you're grieving for. When the time is right the tears will come.

Vince Gill wrote this song after he lost his brother. One of the most beautiful songs ever written. When you put the pure notes ifVince Gill,s voice and the amazing Patty Loveless. It cannot get better.

Vince is just about the best Singer/player artist in the industry, and Patty L vocal accompaniment is super, picking Vince up and her powerful harmonies are amazing, she sang right through her own tears, just first class all around, and great insight by Harri , Bravo

Simply amazing! They were very close. George gave him the nick name sweet pea! I love this song in all its versions. It was played a my grandpa's funeral & many others I've attended!! It you'd ever like to listen to another beautiful version, not at a funeral, look for Vince Gill, Patti Lovelace & Ricky Skaggs singing it! Talk about beautiful! All 3 of them have the best harmonizing voices I ever heard! Put em all together & it blows the roof off!!

The shoes Vince Gill is referring to is probably talking about George Jones' song, "Whose Going to Fill Their Shoes?" You should react to it. Great song and video. George was a friend and a mentor to Vince. Lots of deep respect and love going both ways for those two.

It doesn’t take much to make Vince Gill cry, is the truth of it. He can weep over a particularly good meal. He’s just a very emotional guy. It’s what makes him a great singer and songwriter. He makes that guitar weep, too.

If you live long enough even if you never listen to a country music. Your life will be in a country music song. They sing about their moms, pickup trucks, trains, prison, some of the older men have spent time in prison. They sing of love, marriages, divorces, loyalty, cheating,, drinking, all kinds of problems that we all go through sometimes.

Vince Gill wrote this song as a tribute to his brother who had dies and one of best friends', Keith Whitley, who has also died. Keith Whitley is someone to check out, he was a great country singer but couldn't escape his demons and died way to young. In my opinion, Vince Gill's song, "Nobody Answers When I Call Your Name" also a duet with Patty Lovelace is the best country song every written. React to it please.
