The 36th America's Cup presented by Prada will be contested by the winner of the 2017 America's Cup, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron represented by their team, Emirates Team New Zealand, and the winner of the Prada Cup, the challenger selection series which takes place in January-February in 2021.

I can't really see the start penalty to LR...difficoult to see also with a still shot (for me)
Freeze video at the start and it's clear Luna Rossa wasn't early. Political gamesmanship trying to prolong the series? Didn't matter, they were clearly better.

Can someone explain in a few words how the Italians can be that much faster? What percentage contribute skill, technology and food?

don't forget that LR was builded in Italy ans the arms of the foils for all teams are build in Italy so technology is an important part... also don't foget that jimmy is the only stranger on board, the other guys are Italian, so italian food get us a superpower :)
If you're familiar with f1 it's a bit like that.
For tech itself there is the general aerodynamics and the main being how the foils come out of the water and then how stable it is on them, its always a balance between stability and raw speed. Recently I found out about the on boards computer controls that also help out with the sail (planet sail on TH-cam has a great interview about that).
All these sailors are highly qualified to fly these things thats where tactics play a major role, using the geometry of the race area which can be used offensively or defensively.
Then like all good games there is the RNG, weather conditions play a major role but since both teams experience it, tactics and the ability to keep the vessel on its foils ( check the initial UK vs USA races)
Throughout the various cups you'll also have further development, examples of this would be uk getting their ass whooped early then winning without a single loss and then Italy being so dominant now.
And the food obviously

Despite the 50 meters advantage that we were forced to give them to serve the penalty we recovered them almost immediately and then paved them, how else could Luna Rossa's superiority be manifested.

Luna Rossa appears to have more curve to their jib/mainsail than UK. I use to sail on SF bay and one day the other two I was with kept tightening the j/m and it appeared to me we lost some speed when doing that. Some curve is good was our conclusion and that's part of Luna Rossa's advantage over UK in my opinion.
Interesting that the boats without a main boom prevailed (NZ didn't have to qualify ofc, but we've seen their performance in December and in practice). The increased flexibility of the main's foot seems to yield quite the advantage.
Been stewing on same thing. Inclined to agree. They had an edge. Italians doing excellent job too. Good tactics & very smooth handling.

The sickest part of this on the broadcasted live rerun, about 10 seconds later, the over-imposed Finish Line was omitted ............................... somebody was realllllyyyyy alert with his delete digit.

@@fiero2499 I'd say, obviously there is something wrong with the NZ race organizers, also there seems to have been bad press about ITA in the NZ press, which is both weird and telling.
If I was with ITA or the sponsor Prada, I would consult with lawyers and pro-actively create a big stink to make sure there will be no more referee foul play or any repeat of this, and this particular referee who called this, send packing to set an example. Which I would be very surprised if he hasn't already, and they should insist this idiot be released.
This is a tens of millions of dollars operation, none of this should happen.

Complete Coverage Failure: As they're replaying the start, Luna Rossa somehow gets the lead, but we'll never know how because we didn't see it! That's a situation in which the replay of the start should have occurred later in the race, not as both boats were jockeying for position to determine the lead.
That's why I alsways watch the race with two devices: one with the main channel, the other with just the virtual eye. You can clearly see LR had more pressure on the right side and were able to pass Ineos. I think Ineos sould have covered LR as soon as they got the penalty. Instead they went for a split, and paid the price.
Watch the port/starboard entry stern mounted footage, you get to watch the entire race onboard and hear all onboard comms with no commentary. It’s blissful.

Have you heard of Offshore races? There are lots of them, Vendee Globe as a current example. You don't have to watch AC (which has been a coastal multi-leg match race for many decades) if you don't want to.

The racing so far in these boats has been terrible. Boring, boring, boring.
@Lupus1444 Obviously more exciting to be on the winning side.... but the reality is that if people lose interest and stop watching because the racing sucks... sponsors will take their money and go away real fast, and that will make the organizers of the Americas Cup super nervous. No sponsors... no cup.

Well he already won two america's cups with an American team
I guess Ineos should've had 3 penalties then:
Graeme Spence - Australia
Joey Newton - Australia
Luke Parkinson - Australia
And a kiwi was the skipper on the American boat this time, it's nothing new.
The AC is much more about one rich person/group vs another than country vs country anyway.
