Thanks so much for taking the time to post this. It's not a difficult project when YOU explain it. I will be making this for sure. You're so good at it, I hope one day I am too. Your voice is reassuring as well! Thanks and have a nice day! 😀👍
Thank you so much Jan, I really really enjoyed watching you create these beautiful and useful baby changing mats. As always your tutorials are very very precise and so to the point. You’re a brilliant teacher and everything is so inspiring too. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤❤
I love your videos! You have a wonderful way of teaching! I love that you speak slowly and explain everything in detail! Love this project! I think baby gifts will be my favorite things to sew!
Hi Jan, I just absolutely love how well you explain all of your great projects. My question is, could you show how you would go about making a pouch attached to the waterproof changing pad? Thank you so much
Another thing about the flat side of the clips is that they are often marked with 1/4"--another reminder that flat side up is right side up. Jan, you are one of the few makers that consistently point out increasing the length of the stitch for topstitching. My OCD self thanks you. Also, for those working with bindings, and edge stitch guide (I have a 1/16th (and others)for my Juki TL) and a regular one for my other machines) will help immensely in staying uniformly away from the edge. This is a very useful project. Those cats with kites is precious fabric.
No, you guys that is the wrong way to use those clips. The flat side has to be on the bottom so that your fabric slides along while you are sewing the pieces together turning them upside down is a surefire way to get them caught. I’m just shaking my head. I can’t believe people don’t know how to use these clips. I guess there aren’t very many good tutorials but you want the flat side, touching your bed of your sewing machineflat against flat.
I am as well. I enjoy sewing on the binding especially since I saw a video for using Milliner’s needles. I was amazed at how much easier they were to use.
@@JanHowell Just finished this with the flip method and top stitching and it turned out great! I have worked with PUL before and forgot how uncooperataive it can be but I wrangled it in the end. This will be a go-to pattern for gifts from now on!
Thank you for sharing the link for the PUL.In the video when working with the PUL, it gives a idea of the feel where other wise impossible to tell when just ordering. and of course the simplistic and direct directions of putting the 3 differnt styles together. The technique of the bias tape is a keeper. .
This is a wonderful tutorial. Like others have said, you make it easy to follow along and give great tips. I'm wondering how wide you made the bias tape for this mat. Thank you so much! Best, Paula
I used a 1 inch, double fold bias tape that I made myself. youmakeitsimple.com/2024/03/23/how-to-make-a-waterproof-baby-changing-mat-simple-sewing-tutorial/
Do you give Care instructions when giving or selling to a recipient ? I love this idea , wish I knew this when my children were babies. Thank you for sharing. 😊
You are so welcome. I havn't, but instructions would be a good idea. These can pretty much go in a regular load of wash so instructions wouldn't be too crucial.
I don't if I'm giving them as a gift. The fabric just doesn't look as crisp. There may be a little shrinking of the flannel but not enought to worry about.
thank you for this video, so helpful! But I was wondering what is the use of fleece in this product? Can i just sew 2 fabrics (PUL & patterned flannel)? will it change how it looks? thank you :)
If you flip it the other direction, Selvage to selvage that is 45 inches. you'll be able to get the 25 inches and you only need 18 inches for the other side. 1/2 yard is 19 inches. I hope tha makes sense.
I make my own. You can get all the details here. It's really quite easy to do. youmakeitsimple.com/2020/08/01/diy-printable-fabric-labels-easy-iron-on-method/
I show how to make your own here. Video tutorial available at the bottom of the post. youmakeitsimple.com/2020/08/01/diy-printable-fabric-labels-easy-iron-on-method/ th-cam.com/video/XnEYEZ_40ng/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HZuPSDX4dVRMzSEt
I’m anxious to make this. I used your links to get the heat bond and PUL fabric. If I’m successful I will donate to the crisis pregnancy center. I will be using a walking foot.
hello very beautiful video please kindly film how to operate the sewing machine electric foot pedal how its used to sew please kindly reply back ok?thank you very much 😊
I put my reply in the wrong spot, but that is not how you’re supposed to use these clips. She’s using them upside down. There’s a flat edge for a reason and that so it will glide with your fabric while you were sewing your pieces together.

Thanks. You are so kind. Let me know how it goes. Enjoy the day!
Thank you! You are a sewing instructor extraordinaire! ☮️💞🙏🏼
Wow, thank you!
Thanks for the tip regarding the clips, I have been using them upside down. Great tutorial. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
So many people use the clips upside down

Love the your video. Question do you wash your flannel before hand since it skrinks?
I don't, they wash up just fine. That is totally your preference. Since I give them mostly as gifts, the crisp new fabric seems to look so much nicer.
Great idea. 👍
Thank you!

Timely video! Do you recommend washing the flannel or fabric first?
I don't if I'm giving them as a gift. The fabric just doesn't look as crisp. There may be a little shrinking of the flannel but not enought to worry about.
Great tutorial, one question is why use the fusible fabric? So you can use fusible fleece not fusible interfacing?
Fusible fleece gives it a thicker feel instead of adding the layer of flannel.
thank you for this video, so helpful! But I was wondering what is the use of fleece in this product? Can i just sew 2 fabrics (PUL & patterned flannel)? will it change how it looks? thank you :)
Yes you can!
Hi ... I love your videos...thank you. Please advise me where you purchase the waterproof fabric used in this baby change pad. Thank you.
You can find it at most fabric stores or here online.
geni.us/XONvIP4 Thanks. You are so kind
I purchased 1/2 yrd. Cotton fabric (directional like yours), but only able to get 19” long (instead of 25”) ?? Guess my mat will be smaller.
If you flip it the other direction, Selvage to selvage that is 45 inches. you'll be able to get the 25 inches and you only need 18 inches for the other side. 1/2 yard is 19 inches. I hope tha makes sense.
Please share where you get your tags at you put on your finished sewing projects ❤
I make my own. You can get all the details here. It's really quite easy to do. youmakeitsimple.com/2020/08/01/diy-printable-fabric-labels-easy-iron-on-method/
Do you prewash the cotton fabric?
I'don't
Hi. how are you? where do I find how to make the labels. thank you very much. 😊

do we need to pre-wash the flannel before we use it
I don't. Preference only.
Where did you order those cute tags?
I show how to make your own here. Video tutorial available at the bottom of the post. youmakeitsimple.com/2020/08/01/diy-printable-fabric-labels-easy-iron-on-method/

What washing instructions should I include with these mats? Can they be put in the dryer after washing?
Yes. The Pul fabric can be put in the dryer.
❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
What type needle do you recommend?
Thank you for the tutorial.
You are so welcome . I use a universal needle, 80 or 90
I’m anxious to make this. I used your links to get the heat bond and PUL fabric. If I’m successful I will donate to the crisis pregnancy center. I will be using a walking foot.
Wonderful!
The changing of the camera angles was making it where I can’t watch it.
I am so sorry. Thanks for the feedback.
hello very beautiful video please kindly film how to operate the sewing machine electric foot pedal how its used to sew please kindly reply back ok?thank you very much 😊
.
All you do is press your foot on it. What's the problem?
I put my reply in the wrong spot, but that is not how you’re supposed to use these clips. She’s using them upside down. There’s a flat edge for a reason and that so it will glide with your fabric while you were sewing your pieces together.
Thanks for sharing.
Is that man Robert ur son
Robert?
What presser foot do you recommend for adding binding to your project?
I use the basic foot that comes with my machine.
