In Portugal we roast chestnuts all the time, usually around November, and I absolutely love it! Usually before we put them in the oven we salt them lightly. We have a thing here were people roast them on the street and the streets smell delicioussss

In my country, Portugal, there are people selling roasted chestnut in the street, and let me tell you the smell on the streets are amazing. The chestnut are a winter "tradition" in Portugal you can make them in the oven with salt or you can cook the chestnuts (without the outer shell) with salt, cinnamon stick. The smell in your house will be amazing. You have to try it.
Its so funny to hear you talk about chestnuts! In Switzerland the cities always smell like “Maroni” (chestnuts) as soon as it gets to autumn... you can buy them on every corner! ☺️ or sometimes we just go find them in the forrest. Also we have a special knife to cut the top and we always only cut a line and no X! ☝🏽😊 (and I have never heard of this towel technique - we just peal them individually while eating... ☺️)

In Chile chestnuts are called castañas and a really good way to eat them is by making them into a puree and serve it with cream 😊
We sprinkle salt on the chestnuts before roasting them and put a little bit of butter on each before eating them. Delicious!
