- Hartleyburn common straddles the boarders of Northumberland and Cumbria and it's mining history can be traced back centuries, quite possibly to Roman times as they constructed a road over the fells through 7 outcrops of coal.
Latterly it was worked by Lord Carlisle's company and then James Thompson through a lease off the Carlisle's eventually closing in the 1880's but being reworked as part of Lambley east by Johnny Longridge in the 1930's and then under the National Coal Board.
I have quite probably got the depth of the Brampton Mary pit/Mineral shaft wrong in saying it is over 400'. The Geological survey gives a depth of just over 200'. Sadly the shaft doesn't appear on many of the colliery plans and the exact pumping infer-structure is still quite unknown....Research is ongoing.
Nice Saturday night entertaining video Clive 🍿👍🏻
Great stuff , you are finding more and more info on this fascinating area, keep it up. I am up for a Woodhorn visit again
Thank you for the info , I used to live at Midgeholme and have explored These features but never knew the details of the workings .
Many thanks for sharing your passion and time, I enjoy watching. I'm not an enthusiast as such, in fact I photograph wildlife and nature but this stuff is good to watch and an insight into another aspect of our national history. Regards, Mark.
This is what TH-cam was made for. Great stuff
thanks for keeping it alive matey
Thanks for that, absolutely fascinating, we were in that area the other day looking at a historic site, but no pictures or video as was on private land and owner didn't want attention drawing to it. Just starting to learn about that area.
Thanks guys, much appreciated and I appreciate what you do also. Maybe I can help out with info on that project...I have studied the area for 30 years now. Everything is always in the strictest confidence. I have lots of research available, old docs , maps and plans ect which I collected over the years. rossendalecolliries@gmail.com

I love how you delve right into the past with these excellent videos. I know absolutely nothing about the coal industry, but your videos honestly keep me hooked. Love the use of the drone as well as it gives us more detail and a better view of things.
Thanks Chris...I missed not having the drone all summer...Hope you and Vicky are well, would be good to meet up again...Did that vid with the Action pro camera
As an ex coal miner who worked in the mines of Derbyshire , i appreciate these videos of our really old mines . 👍
