  • In this short video, I'll show you how to make coiled wire for ganutell spiral wound flowers, using our "Tornado" Coiling & Twisting Tools, available at www.ginabsilkw...
along with a range of Ganutell kits and materials.
Ganutell is the name for small flowers created using wire and thread. One of the simplest forms of ganutell are the flowers created using a coiled wire. The word is derived form cannetile (French), cannotiglio (Italian) and canotilla (Spanish) - which means coiled wire. In English, we call this wire 'perl' because it resembles a string of beads when tight.

This is so cool. Never knew I could do this myself at home.

Just about to try doing this, but what is the best gauge wire to use when making the coiled wire, and what's the best gauge wire for the core wire?

It does depend on the end use. I tend to like a .04mm copper wire for both perl and core for many uses - it is easy then :) . If I want really fine ganutell flowers, I'll go with a .25mm for the perl, but still use the thicker .04mm for the core, otherwise they can be difficult to wrap and don't really have much structure. Using a thicker core wire can add strength, but of course you need to ensure that the rod you use for the perl is large enough for the the core wire. A thicker wire for the perl and core can be great for tassels and other uses.

@@GinaBSilkworks Thanks for your reply. I had a feeling there wasn't a straight forward answer. :) I'll have a play around with different gauges and see what works for my project. Thanks again.
