  • In this sixth episode of our Walk, Climb & Fly series we join Rob Johnson as he climbs the Cneifion arete, a popular climbing and scrambling route from Cwm Cneifion to Y Gribin ridge, one of his favourite grade 3 scrambles in Snowdonia, North Wales, UK. He then takes the quick route down by flying from the top on his lightweight paraglider.

Yes, a lovely route...but too short. I'm skinny enough to be able to squirm my way through - rather than straddle - that chimney section. Nice footage 👍

Me too… 🤘🏼 one of my favourites… and that chimney..!
Great day of scrambling to link Idwal buttress, Cneifion and then Dolmen with either Y-gribin or bristly ridge down….

Yes, the route could do with being twice as long

I'm always a little anxious to see a pilot multi tasking with focus diverted away from flying with a camera 🤳

      Depends on the pilots bandwidth.

@ Worst Channel ever, thanks for commenting and sharing your concerns! 👍 It's good that you are aware of the risks of filming when flying, and draw attention to this very important safety consideration. Filming can be very distracting and, without proper care, a serious safety risk when flying - or doing anything that carries serious risk. However Rob is a professional filmmaker, and has been for many years. As a result filmmaking takes up much less of his attentional space than it does for most others. He makes it look much easier than it really is! Rob is also a highly experienced mountaineer and climbing instructor, which I'm sure helps in a mountain environment. From speaking with and watching him, it seems to me that Rob is well aware of his abilities and limitations as a paraglider pilot. He's also very thoughtful and careful about how he plans and executes his flights for these films. For example, he's very careful about the weather conditions he will fly in - more so than most!🙂
