I love how vastly different Pam’s GOTY list is from others. Makes me appreciate the scale of how large gaming has evolved where we can have all these options. Citizen Sleeper I played for a few hours on game pass, but I never could get into. I respect people’s love for it as it looks great. For my GOTY list I throughly enjoyed Elden Ring, TMNT Shredder’s Revenge, Neon White, Kirby and the Forgotten Lands, Vampire Survivors, Stray, and too many others to mention. In all I played a little over 20 new games last year.
I really enjoyed Stray, I played it all in one day. It seems a bit marmite, I think it’s a fantastic walking sim though. When you think “cat game” a lot of people probably think stealth platformer so were a bit disappointed.
Totally! I might not like everything in her list but I always make it a point to try a few. From 2021, her number one: Astalon tears of the earth ended up being one of my favorites for that year as well.
One of my favourite things about this channel is that Pam mostly plays games that I do not play, yet every time she makes a list like this I add new games to my "must play" list. And as my daughter starts playing her first advanced video games (she is nearing the end of Stray, her first adventure game) I can see that she is also interested in games that aren't my typical style so it's nice to have another source of games that she might be interested in.
Paradise Killer was def a standout for me and found it on this channel. Not sure if that qualifies for 2022 but spent most of that year going through my ever expanding backlog.
Curious if you checked out Crystal Project? That was likely my sleeper hit of the year for 2022. If you haven't heard of it, it's a top down, classic Zelda pov exploration HEAVY JRPG, made by one developer. What makes it so amazing to me is how explorable the world is, I mean there is a hidden passage in almost every screen. Another great thing about it, was that it eschews a lot of the classic linear quest system of classic games. Instead it presents a single quest. Recover every lost crystal spread across, above and below the world map. And you can quite literally discover them in any order you feel like. Some are gated by abilities or locked until you find access to different vehicles/mounts/etc, but each area has tons of Crystals to find, almost always guarded by a boss. Oh and the combat is pure FFV, job system gone into overload. No random encounters, itys uses the Chrono Trigger system of showing all enemies on the world map. It was a super lovely game and I had a blast with it. I still need to go and finish it actually.
This is an awesome list because it has tons of games I've never heard of and not the same stuff you see from everyone. I really think I need to play a FMV game...still never have!
Thank you for the list. Got to play Islets thanks to you and i absolutely love the game so far. Definitely would have missed it if it wasn't for this video.
Astlibra Revision is one that slipped under many people's radars. But if you love Metroidvanias, it's right up your alley. It has its flaws, but the story is great and there are a ton of possible endings. I put in over 65 hours and think I may have gotten the real ending (maybe?). The playstyle and mechanics are also very fluid, with a crafting and weapons modding system that is actually intuitive. The "Grow" factor, where you can upgrade skills without needing to level up is great, and I would argue necessary. Oh, and yes, I know Pam thought Stray was underwhelming, but I loved it. 😻
I guess this was the year of "dopamine games" for me. I'd been playing Rogue Legacy 2 since Early Access in 2020 but since it fully released in 2022 I'd probably give it my GOTY. That game was a really fun 100-hour ride, though I burned out and didn't complete all of the content. There's a lot. While it was a bit of a grind at times, I just couldn't get enough of the butter smooth gameplay. I also played Vampire Survivors in EA. Put 20 hours into it just with the 2-3 levels and limited characters at the time, and took a break until the 1.0 release. Now I'm at over 60 hours with still more to do. That game absolutely melts away the hours.
@@Cannotbetamed1 I took some breaks but every time I came back to it I got sucked in. There are a lot of games out there so it's not always easy to make a commitment unless you're absolutely enthralled with the experience. Any thoughts on Infernax? I'm still playing through it. A pretty basic Castlevania-esque experience, but enjoyable. Not as brutally hard as I thought it'd be.
Always appreciated how diverse and varied your lists are Pam! This and you do a stellae job hightlighting these games and i have a few to add to my backlog now! Stellar work as always!
This video helped me find a few games that went under the radar for me. Thanks for the time and energy you put into your videos. My backlog just got larger.
"Not For Broadcast" gave me flashbacks to my job in live TV. I remember your Twitch stream of that game and thought how original it was (and also how very, very British, haha).
Plague Tale Requiem was beautiful, sad, and a worthy sequel to Innocence. Pentiment was great, with its beautiful artstyle, well written dialogue, a great murder mystery with many moments of levity, humour & quirky characters. Obsidian does characters, story & dialogue well. I have Signalis & Return to Monkey Island installed but have yet to delve in. I began Immortality & have been meaning to get back to it. Great list, Pam.
I really appreciate that your lists Pam, are so varied and escape from traditional games! For example, I was unaware of Citizen Sleeper and it was your favorite game of the year. For me, my favorite games of the year were Elden Ring, Tunic, Signalis, and Vampire Survivors. Elden Ring was my 1, in fact I played it for 250 hours and I enjoyed it a lot, but I can't stop highlighting Tunic, for me an incredible work in every aspect, one of the most beautiful indies I've played in recent years. Greetings from Argentina lady! 🤗.
Thanks for a great video! I didn’t play islets and now putting it on my list. Your list for 2022 had some similarities to other but it was very different but good because it mentions game people might have missed.
Another great list, Pam! I was glad to see that Elden Ring wasn't just the default number 1 like almost everyone else. You always have interesting and unique takes and it is refreshing to come to your channel and see things that most other people aren't covering. Tinykin and Islets are two that I hadn't heard of and will definitely check out. Thanks!
As a Series X owner, it’s great to see many of your recommendations in Game Pass. GP and Elden Ring was what I enjoyed in 2022 with some Switch RPGs/Nintendo IP thrown in.
One can always rely on you to come up with interesting picks Pam. This confirmed to me that I should check out Citizen Sleeper and Signalis, and Escape Academy looks cool as well.
I just finished tinykin and I loved it! Soooooo creative! I know I know it’s like pikmin but the flying and amazing rooms you explore made it great! I would love a sequel maybe with combat but just a sequel more of the same would be amazing so glad to finally see someone praise it!
Midnight Suns was definitely a breakout hit for me this year, for all the same reasons, plus I love the comics, so there's that aspect too! Great video, with several games I hadn't seen, so will be checking them out!
Great list! I was late to Citizen Sleeper but I just finished it this week and it immediately bumped Forbidden West out of my top 5. The rest of my list was Xenoblade Chronicles 3, God of War Raganrok, Triangle Strategy and Kirby and the Forgotten Land as my overall goty. It was a pretty varied year for games. There’s still a few titles I need to check out before the overwhelming mass of the 2023 release schedule kicks in.
interesting top 10, I have only played 2 of them, some might not be my jam, but a few I never heard of I may check out. It is refreshing to see a different list, it seems like most top 10 GOTY lists its like everyone compared notes and didn't have their own opinions. This list is something different which makes for more interesting content.
Amazing list Pam.. I need to finally start Citizen Sleeper. I agree, Midnight Suns turned out way better than anticipated... My sleeper of 2022 is Harvestella. It's such a chill game, yet much darker in ton than it appears to be. The soundtrack is also crazy good.
I love how different your list is, and I now have a handful of new games I want to try. I didn't start playing Immortality until after the game awards, but it's such an interesting game to play.
Great video, great list. I always love watching your best of list for the year cause I always find a few things in there I didn't know about that I'm sure I'll enjoy. Tinykin looks right up my alley. And I just played the first Plague Tale a few months ago and I'm glad to hear the sequel turned out so well. Can't wait to check it out.
I really need a new PC or a PS5. I loved A Plague Tail and you convinced me to play the second part (I was already interested, but your comment here convinced me for good, thank you).
Glad to see some love for Escape Academy. I randomly picked it up last month on Game Pass and thoroughly enjoyed it, though I'll admit that I needed to peek at a guide to solve some of the puzzles.
Hey Pam Happy New Year to you. Very Interesting selection of games. TMNT Shredders Revenge. 😃YES! I really love and appreciate the continuity they did for the fans in this game. Well worth the wait to get a physical edition of it. Plus you can play as April O Neil and Splinter for the first time ever from this classic 80's franchise! Also the TMNT Cowabunga Collection is well worth the purchase too since you get all the classics TMNT series games from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis and a few Arcade Ports that were released by Konami at that time all in one cart! They even come with the import versions of these games if you want to compare the differences as well. Get it while its cheap! It'll only go up once the systems become harder to find in the future. Not For Broadcast Definitely reminds me of this game: Headliner: NoviNews ( Its actual a sequel game, but you don't necessarily need to play the first one to play this one. ) At the time of this post its currently avialable on the Switch and other systems. Its not an FMV game, but the concept is pretty close of you've never played it. Its a game where you decide what news gets published and character interactions/reactions that happen as a result of your publishing. Its a fun game with multiple endings. Pentiment Definitely reminds me of The Way of the Samurai franchise. Only difference here is where it it takes place. Even if you've never played The Way of the Samurai for the combat , its the characters and how you interact with them is why I compared it to this game. Unfortunately I don't have much of a list to speak of 2022 games. I did enjoy Metal Max Xeno Reborn though. Its a remake JRPG and the first time in the US that we got a port from the Metal Max franchise. There's not too much story. Its more about the action and you get to battle monsters and robots with custom made tanks when you find them in a post apocalyptic world .😁 Anime characters along with piloting and battling inside tanks. Can't go wrong with that. Plus you have the dog Pochi to help you out. ( In anime/manga standards Pochi would be the mascot of the game. There's suppose to be a spin off game with him that's suppose to come out soon. ) Its Fun JRPG game if you can pick up for a cheap price. There were talks of sequel game that sadly got cancelled. Too bad too there's not many JRPGs I know of in the US where you can find tanks to use to attack monsters and robots. That's it for me. Thanks for your time as always. ( P.S.: Just wondering out of concern how many of your previous video game videos were affected by the new YT terms of Service changes? Hopefully it didn't affect you too much. Take care. )
The TMNT games that came out in 2022 are my #1. They complement each other well. Teamwork is the strongest theme in SHREDDER’S REVENGE. Taken together with THE COWBUNGA COLLECTION they provide an unspoken gaming historical TMNT experience that is beyond beyond awesome. I also liked TRIANGLE STRATEGY.
Nice varied list, a little bit of everything in there and not just one genre which is much appreciated. My gaming backlog is out of control and I'm only just getting into games released a couple of years back (like Cyberpunk 2077). Looks like I'll be adding the Plague Tale series and Citizen Sleeper to the queue.
I'm glad Midnight Suns has been getting some recognition. Ever since the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance series, which started out so good and got worse with every entry, I've been hoping against hope for a new Marvel RPG. And then this was announced. A tactical RPG. Based on the Midnight Suns. Both things that should be impossibilities in our world. I think part of my brain exploded when I first heard about it.
I mainly played old games last year, but of the 2022 releases I played, Shredder's Revenge and A Plague Tale: Requiem were my faves. Especially the latter. And yes, Requiem did make me cry. I gots these tear ducts so, might as well use 'em
Wow you actually had games I was not familiar with in a best of video! Thank you for that. I will be trying Islets for myself soon 😀 I was really upset that Vampire Survivor didn't make your list... Just kidding, but it is oddly fun 😁 I loved Citizen Sleeper as well. Here are some of the games I had a great time with from 2022 in no particular order that are not obvious key titles for the year: Kena Bridge of the Spirits (Beautiful action adventure) Taji (Pixel graphics pure puzzle game) Monument Valley I and II (beautiful perspective puzzle games) - a bit short and not too difficult but really clever. Dorf Romantik (Casual tile placement world building game. Unique, fun, relaxing and visual) Wierd West (Isometric tRPG rough around the edges but great setting and unique style and storytelling) Nobody Saves the World (Technically an Action RPG, but if you are not familiar, look at the store page. Unique and fun) Far Changing Tides (Next part of the Far world, beautiful puzzler. They have it tagged as an action adventure, but that is a mistake) Yes I also like the AA and AAA titles but its more fun to share these. I hope you find something here you have not played and you end up enjoying!
The only issue I ever had was that sometimes if I left my game suspended or on quick resume for a while, my saves would appear to be gone. However, after hard restarting the game they would appear again.
Throughout 2022, I love Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Shredder's Revenge (truly addicting), TMNT Cowabunga Collection, River City Girls, Bayonetta 3, Capcom Fighting Collection as well as the Arcade Stadium vol. 2 and Pocky and Rocky Re-shrined.
My two favs are Tinykin and Hell Pie. Played these both on PC and enjoyed them so much it was like being back in the N64 to PS2 era playing 3d platformers again. I have one on my watchlist for this year on PC which I hope finally comes out and it's Clive N' Wrench. It's a Banjo Kazooie type game, due on Switch as well.
You beat me to some ones I'll showcase as very innovative. You have good taste for games. The evolution of gaming should be more showcased in how they're really adapting to something different, especially from more independent studios, artists and production.
@@Cannotbetamed1 It was pretty solid. It's hard to have a top with some very good ones out there. You make the point about gameplay though, it's refreshing to see something more puzzling and strategic. There are a few medieval art style ones out now, one which I'm playing is like a puzzle logic gameplay. It's not too bad, but I'm uncertain about it fully, and plenty more to add to future playlists. I would be quicker to upload, just having technical difficulties with microphone and older audio interface and older motherboard. An oldie but still kicking, and can't use the other comp for that. It's a job for more electronics and computer mind puzzling. Also of course just the usual life in the way things. I'll probably make videos out of me struggling to find answers there in computer and electronics world. Your pics resemble maturity against a sea of too much similar. I go this route as well and as many others too. But you also know and try what the crowd has more a pull towards, as many and I do too. Glad to have stumbled across your page, and other page. This odd virtual reality social media world we exist.
This was a great list with several games I wasn't even aware of! Watching this, I even realized that I will have to incorporate some of them into the course I'm teaching this term, so thank you very much! I will give you credit when I do bring them up in lecture!
Citizen Sleeper is so good. The other best written game this year for me was Triangle Strategy. I think if Microsoft would see fit to put Pentiment on Switch I could get into it. I've noticed I can only do text heavy games handheld since my gaming PC is permanently displaced by work PC :(
Great list! The main thing I picked up from your list is that you seem to be an incredibly PATIENT person! lmaoooo I played MOST of the games on your list and I must say you are certainly more patient than I could ever be! lol I believe it's because we have so many gaming choices now. I have to decide what gets my time. Do I play on PC, PS5, Xbox, Steam Deck, Gamepass? We are littered with gaming choices and if I'm not HOOKED in the first hour then I tend to move on. It's sad because so many games get ignored but there is only so much time in the day. I'd never thought I'd say this but we have far too many games! lol
My personnal best three are: Disco Elyysium (best writing) Spiritfarer (best pacing) Xeno Gears (best vilain humanity harvester) Honorable mention: Tex Murphy,: Tesla effects (nostalgia) , Tales from the borderlands (funny and silly) and Starcrawler (exploration and combat). Thanks for sharing your views on the subject :)
I do want to try Neon White.
Such an awesome list. I actually just beat Pentiment last week and am still processing some of the choices I made. Definitely a one of a kind game

Headliner: NoviNews
( Its actual a sequel game, but you don't necessarily need to play the first one to play this one. )
At the time of this post its currently avialable on the Switch and other systems.
Its not an FMV game, but the concept is pretty close of you've never played it.
Its a game where you decide what news gets published and character interactions/reactions that happen
as a result of your publishing. Its a fun game with multiple endings.
Pentiment
Definitely reminds me of The Way of the Samurai franchise.
Only difference here is where it it takes place.
Even if you've never played The Way of the Samurai for the combat , its the characters and how you
interact with them is why I compared it to this game.
Unfortunately I don't have much of a list to speak of 2022 games.
I did enjoy Metal Max Xeno Reborn though.
Its a remake JRPG and the first time in the US that we got a port from the Metal Max franchise.
There's not too much story. Its more about the action and you get to battle monsters and robots
with custom made tanks when you find them in a post apocalyptic world .😁
Anime characters along with piloting and battling inside tanks.
Can't go wrong with that.
Plus you have the dog Pochi to help you out.
( In anime/manga standards Pochi would be the mascot of the game.
There's suppose to be a spin off game with him that's suppose to come out soon. )
Its Fun JRPG game if you can pick up for a cheap price.
There were talks of sequel game that sadly got cancelled. Too bad too there's not many JRPGs
I know of in the US where you can find tanks to use to attack monsters and robots.
Awesome, hope you enjoy them!
Sweet, Islets hadn't really crossed my radar, but it does push several of my buttons.
Great video! I'll have have to check out a few of those.
I never thought I'd love a Soulslike...But Elden Ring really is amazing.
Tinykin and citizen sleeper look interesting. I hadn't heard of them but will check em out now.
Nice . I've been waiting for this 👍
I mainly played old games last year, but of the 2022 releases I played, Shredder's Revenge and A Plague Tale: Requiem were my faves.
Here are some of the games I had a great time with from 2022 in no particular order that are not obvious key titles for the year:
Kena Bridge of the Spirits (Beautiful action adventure)
Taji (Pixel graphics pure puzzle game)
Monument Valley I and II (beautiful perspective puzzle games) - a bit short and not too difficult but really clever.
Dorf Romantik (Casual tile placement world building game. Unique, fun, relaxing and visual)
Wierd West (Isometric tRPG rough around the edges but great setting and unique style and storytelling)
Nobody Saves the World (Technically an Action RPG, but if you are not familiar, look at the store page. Unique and fun)
Far Changing Tides (Next part of the Far world, beautiful puzzler. They have it tagged as an action adventure, but that is a mistake)
Yes I also like the AA and AAA titles but its more fun to share these. I hope you find something here you have not played and you end up enjoying!
The only issue I ever had was that sometimes if I left my game suspended or on quick resume for a while, my saves would appear to be gone. However, after hard restarting the game they would appear again.
I loved Return to Monkey Island so much. Even the end of the game. Heartwarming.
The ending made me tear up a little.
Signalis has some funky controls though, reminds me of the movie Ex machina
Lordy Pam you never fail to introduce me to some bangers. Immediately grabbed Pentiment and Citizen Sleeper… but which one to play first? 🤔
i never heard of Pentiment before! i'm gonna try it 100%
Ooooh Signalis looks right up my alley. Thanks
Hope you enjoy it!
I looooved The Quarry, it's such a silly but lovable cheesy take on US 80's camp horror movies.
Like until dawn which is a given because it was made by the same people
You beat me to some ones I'll showcase as very innovative. You have good taste for games. The evolution of gaming should be more showcased in how they're really adapting to something different, especially from more independent studios, artists and production.
Glad you liked the list.
This odd virtual reality social media world we exist.
that's a fun list. gave me a lot of games to check out!
Pam, have you mentioned Arcade Archives Tetris: The Grand Master and Pac-Man Museum +? Excellent video, by the way.
Citizen Sleeper was also my game of the year.
That's another mention of Citizen Sleeper I've seen in so many videos thus far. Guess imma play some Citizen Sleeper then.
This was a great list with several games I wasn't even aware of! Watching this, I even realized that I will have to incorporate some of them into the course I'm teaching this term, so thank you very much! I will give you credit when I do bring them up in lecture!
That's so cool, thanks!
@@Cannotbetamed1 Thank you!
Citizen Sleeper is so good. The other best written game this year for me was Triangle Strategy. I think if Microsoft would see fit to put Pentiment on Switch I could get into it. I've noticed I can only do text heavy games handheld since my gaming PC is permanently displaced by work PC :(
Requiem looks unbelievable, might get it.. Can't wait to hear your list of bad games of 2022. Stay well!
The disappointing game list went up a couple weeks ago.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Apologies for missing it.
I'd never thought I'd say this but we have far too many games! lol
Haha Signalis knows real horror
Man those 6 slots for inventory are scary on their own 😆
Not For Broadcast looks and sounds like a ton of fun! Definitely gonna have to check it out 🤔
every best games of 2022 list is the same, but this one, I like this one, keep up the good work!
Thanks!
It’s cool that someone is showing Pentiment some love. I know it’s extremely niche, but it is an awesome game.
My personnal best three are:
Disco Elyysium (best writing)
Spiritfarer (best pacing)
Xeno Gears (best vilain humanity harvester)
Honorable mention: Tex Murphy,: Tesla effects (nostalgia) , Tales from the borderlands (funny and silly) and Starcrawler (exploration and combat).
Thanks for sharing your views on the subject :)
