    Awesome job! Love the tree-crane and the vinegar pump, very creative.

    1 kiddy pool with 1-gallon black molasses and 9 gallons of H20 cover (for smell) 2-3 weeks and the keel would be ready to spray off, prep and paint. No grinding brushing just a pressure washer if you like. Moving.... .. . as something I would have done Solo! Great job !!! I'm wanting a Halman 20, no swing.

    Good work guys! I have a Parker Dawson as well and will be pulling my keel at some point soon to refinish it and change out my cable. I don't have a super bad ass tree to use around me so I will likely have to spring for a boat hoist instead.

    I refinished my Catalina 22 keel which was not so gone as this one which had obviously gone though it’s zincs. Sandblasting is a good start followed by encapsulation in epoxy. I used west system. The tree thing is scary and I made a proper support system so i could pull the trailer completely out as it needed work as well. An important note is that once the bronze pin is replaced and trued up is the time for epoxy. I also laminated a piece of stainless into the epoxy on the side where the lock bolt tends to scratch though the paint/ epoxy. This has proven to be resilient. Antifouling pain is also a good investment. Zinks need to connect through the epoxy into the cast iron to be effective

      Do you have any details on the support you built to pull your swing keel?

    What could possibly go wrong!?

    You might want to add to leave the trailer connected to the truck!!!! Step 1, tree branch gives way. Step 2, boat falls back onto trailer, but is not centered on the trailer. Step 3, trailer is pushed down at the rear from the weight of the boat and the tongue of the trailer is pushed upward because its not connected to the trailer hitch, Step 4, you become a cautionary tale. Very creative solution, but there are some caveats there!

    Jib halyard looks long enough to run back to the cockpit, but it would be hard to hoist and drop from there unless you added blocks.

    I have a Midship 25 that I had the keel redone in 2017.

      Further to my previous comment: I had a local boat builder do the work, he used two lift trucks for the lift. My keel was operating and not rusted as much as the one illustrated. The problem was that the pin was ceased in place. After using heat and brut force to no avail I found a product (PB Blaster) in spray can. It took a few squirts to each end of the pin and a few light taps to the pin and out it came.

    How is your keel holding up? The sheet metal partially covering it looked like aluminum to me, which would cause galvanic corrosion. Not an expert - it could have been stainless steel.

    Hi Duane, I got a PD. But I had a problem with the swing keel. The cable broke, and then I lost the keel!!!!. It is in a shallow area with easy access (in a marina). How do you put everything back in place so it doesn't fall again... Can you (or someone else) explain to me how to secure the keel ? Thanks !

    Nice work! i have a 73 Midship and keel seems ok so far but will most likely need to work on it at some point. Just wondering when you reattached the keel gearbox and mounting plate it sits on inside the boat did you need to use 3m 4200 or similar product top bed it before bolting it down? I am taking out my gear box and mounting bracket as the plug to the keel lock down is seized in place? Thx

    Does it matter if the swing keel is alittle rusty?

    How long did “Real slow Will” cycle that vinegar for.. I got the same problem. Using less aggressive food grade diluted acetic acid…

      My boat is a midshipman 25,it has no wood in the hull ,the only difference is my boat is solid woven roven fiberglass ,and your boat has wood core.

    steel has the benefit of a lifting keel but the corrosion is shocking compared to lead

  • @KM-ny2ln

    I appreciate your ingenuity in getting the keel out. But are you at all concerned the same thing will happen again - that the keel will once more corrode? Seems like the protective paint coating won't last forever. I used to coat my centerboard with fiberglass.

    • @deo3655
      @deo3655  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given long enough, it may corrode to that point again. The previous owner kept the boat in salt water for most of the year which increased the corrosion rate. As long as I raise and lower the keel regularly it should last a long time.

    • @jimdavis215
      @jimdavis215 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@deo3655 on the other hand, encapsulating it in fiberglass might hide the corrosion and if hauled keep wafer in contact with the steel and surely make it rust. . I like the idea of 'just' painting it. Any rust should be marginal. Good job.

    Check this out. This site used a "Go Hoist" lift for the same model boat.
