2:23 "How could one person play three things at once without his head exploding?" I asked myself a similar question when I saw a video from about three years ago, of some guy playing Three Little Birds on eight instruments at once. You should check that out if you get a chance. ;)
Thanks for the lesson man! I started playing a lot in this style a few years ago because of your version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, but I don't use any kind of pick. I hope to get better and make my own versions of great songs like you do :)
@Novi it sure seems kinda odd but they are really confortable, you should try one on a guitar center they are lightweight and they have a really good high fret acces
Hey thanks man, I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years but just found my niche I love that Chet Atkins style and you explained how to practice in a more organized way!
Chet used a plastic thumb pick and could play classical style with thumb (alternating bass) and melody with the fore-, middle- and ring fingers. With the pick between the thumb and forefinger you have to resort to hybrid picking, like here.
This is a great video I love that style my grandpa is a big Chet Atkins and Merle Travis fan he recently got diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so I’ve been trying to learn as many fingerstylesongs as I can to play for him if you want a huge challenge in this style try strutten by jerry reed it’s insane but so cool and I must learn it that bye bye blackbird is a good one I was actually watching you play it on instagram lastnight you make some great videos your probably my favorite TH-camr
First Atkins song I learnt was Mr Bojangles - incredible tune. Then I was able to play a song I’ve always wanted to play - Tommy Emmanuel’s rendition of Blue Moon. Such an awesome style because if someone asks you to play a song and you don’t feel like singing you can always whip out the ol faithful melodic fingerpicking tunes.
Here is a few extra tips. Don't try a song until you have the typical E,D,A,D pattern down with your thumb. Then, try and play off beats with your index finger. This will give you independence. Next, learn Windy and Warm, it's the easiest yet still iconic and quintessential song of the genre Finally, get your muting down!
Re: tab. (or manuscript) I understand the more different ways you learn something, the more solid it is in memory. Your muscle memory, vision of fingers and vision of tab/score work together for you.
Hey man, I've been trying to learn this style and, looking all over the web, I see Chet himself and Tommy Emmanuel speaking as if the melody and the bass will eventually end up together as you state at 3.25. Am I missing something here or what? I'd like to be able to add the alternating bass on any melody without having to work it out note by note.
Love this type of content! Wish I care enough to pick up my guitar more :( I’ll have to watch your video about burnout. I kinda just wish I had a teacher to get on me and give me homework and hold me accountable. I really don’t have a lot of self-discipline.
Travis-picking has always been much more impressive to me than sweeping. I’ve been trying to Travis-pick for over a decade and my hands just don’t wanna work with me 😅
anybody interested in this style of playing check out Buster B. Jones, he is a legend of this style and was a great teacher as well he has videos on youtube.
In my opinion, i feel lije you should do one Sensei a week and mix in with your other more entertaining or therapeutic content. Showing a few of the bits and pieces of SamGuit's style is peaking behind the wizard's curtain. Your playing is always so tasteful, gutsy and melodic. When you rip it's always musical and i really dig that. So many youtube guitar channels feature some very impressive wankery, but, it's wankery. Your stuff is always musical. P.s. do you have a fuzz box, heard some fuzz on a video but you never listed one on your gear breakdown. It's all in the fingers?
You are on the way to satori my friend, you take your sword and doing fine thinks but it looks like you are ronin so keep going, thanks and all the best.
Nah u gotta mute those bass notes to do it right, plant that pinky finger down there, and get yourself a thumb pick. The boom chick isn’t there yet. Not tryna hate but I don’t think u can quite claim your playing Chet Atkins until you do these thing. Good way of braking it down though.
Go back to Chet's influences. Chet came up with his unique style by trying to imitate Merle Travis and getting it, by his own admission, wrong. They only had radio back in those days. You can go back a bit further by looking at Merle Travis' influences, he borrowed heavily from Piedmont Blues. All of which can be found on TH-cam. Going back and working forward helps because you learn where their influences got their influences and can then grasp the concepts behind their playing styles.
This is an example on how to use tabs, using them before figuring out the piece of music is non sense cause it adds nothing to your wisdom, but this way seems cooler and more useful
He is just another guitarist who plays Western musics. Watch Alip Ba Ta who plays Indonesian, Western, Indian, Korean, Dangdut, Japanese, Flamenco and even movie musics. Alip is the only World guitarist.

sg actually stands for "shitty guitar"

Hey thanks man, I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years but just found my niche I love that Chet Atkins style and you explained how to practice in a more organized way!
for anyone trying to learn this style, another great song to start with is freight train, originally by Elisabeth cotten but chet also performed it
Love Chet! Especially the Chester and Lester stuff!❤️

Nice vid and lesson @samuraiguitarist, thanks! Something also important is the palm mute notes wich adds some difficulty in the learning process.

Please do more of this!
Great idea to apply this technique using a standard pick, thank you!!!

You and John 5 really got me back into this style of playing!
this is why you are my favorite guitar youtuber, if you can play like chet atkins, everything else is easy
one of your best videos :) that was an awesome guitar lesson

Excellent, more like this please.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
GENERAL KENOBI
I have that exact guitar. Fred Gretsch’s great grandson signed mine.

Dude are you Canadian? Couldn't help but notice your Blue Bombers shirt. Awesome video as always!
good teaching.
Along very similar lines... Jerry Reed and Roy Clark. Not my favorite style, but I still admire the skill.
I'm going to arrange gojira in the style of Chet Atkins hopefully
Please let us know when you do! I love Gojira, and I’m a big fan of the Chet Atkins / Merle Travis style of playing as well.
Next video Frusciante style? ;-)
First round with RHCP he sounded like Hendrix and Slash. Second time he got softer and "airier", not sure what to call it.
@@edwardmaxwell3951 He became frusciante but better
@@edwardmaxwell3951 Hendrix absolutley. Slash? I think you may have bumped your head.
great video..tabs for sure ..alot of players say my hands dont work like that etc..tabs will get them to work like that, if you want to learn
...great video Sam ! ....no babble ....jst great information ....thx again "
This was great.
You're like the Bob Ross of music
Travis-picking has always been much more impressive to me than sweeping. I’ve been trying to Travis-pick for over a decade and my hands just don’t wanna work with me 😅
Came from Døvidas. Grateful that he introduced me to this gifted ronin.

Very good interpretation. I love Chet Atkins music. He's brilliant. But I also love Kurt Cobain, Bruce Lee, and Philip Toshio Sudo
Great video (y), do you have any more song suggestions by Chet Atkins to learn?
I love this new sensei series (in the style of), please stick to it. Arrigato for your time, sensei.
Where does one find accurate Chet tab?
Josh Smith or Kirk Fletcher next? =D
should my nails be longer b/c I am working with just the nubs of my fingers
I was always wondering if Sammy owned a Gretsch…

Do shred wars with Jared Dines
He's not that into metal and shredding his more of a rock blues guy

Wait - You're from the 'Peg? Go Blue! Well, actually maybe let's have more hope for the upcoming Jets season....
Comment Section, I would like to know more Chet Atkins, can I get a little direction?

Mr Mola Mola Windy and Warm, Autumn leaves, I'll see you in my Dreams, Bye Bye Blackbird, Freight Train, Mr Sandman, and Cannonball Rag
