  • @zyeborm
    @zyeborm 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +67

    The alcohol just doesn't freeze at the low temperature of the dry ice. It lets the coolth of the dry ice transfer efficiently into the soundproofing.

    • @austinh1028
      @austinh1028 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      yep distributing the cold- It surely speeds up the process vs just using the raw Dry Ice on its own
      Same concept as extreme cooling a CPU/GPU for overclocking a computer- throw chunks of dry ice in a copper pot and pour in Iso-Alcohol to increase the surface area of the ice (inside the copper pot, so more ice is in contact with the copper)

    • @dcampbell4079

      Depending on the purity of the isopropyl alcohol, it freezes at -88°C and carbon dioxide freezes at -78°C.

    • @killjoy1887
      @killjoy1887 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Correct it is all about conduction, air is a pretty terrible conductor so the alcohol acts to rapidly transfer the thermal energy from the sound deadening to the dry ice. In theory you could I guess use water but it freezing would actually be working at cross purpose to what you are trying to accomplish. The water would be giving up its own thermal energy to freeze in place of the sound deadening and would likely end up insulting the piece.

    • @marvindebot3264
      @marvindebot3264 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well, technically you are transferring the heat from the deadening to the dry ice rather than vice versa, cold is simply an absence of heat.

    Hi. Where I used to work, we used dry ice and thick drilling mud to freeze off natural gas wells under pressure to make repairs on the well or pipeline. Pump the mud inside. Then pack dry ice around it, then pour methanol into it. The methanol, like the alcohol, would transfer the cold to the metal way better than the ice by itself.

  • @HurdleHelps
    @HurdleHelps 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The alcohol is used because it wont freeze, is cheap and easy clean-up. And will transfer the cold faster.
    Water would just freeze solid.

    18:50 This is so cool to watch! So get this, dry ice is -109° and isopropyl alcohol freezes at -128°, mixing the two is like an extra cold mix of regular ice and water. The dry ice brings the cold and the alcohol helps spread the cold around. You could even put the alcohol in the deep freezer ahead of time to make it work better.

    • @stevee4942
      @stevee4942 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There's a noticeable difference in power, I also did a Transgo shift kit upgrade. That changed the speed of the shifts less delay, RPM's stay higher so the engine doesn't see big rpm drops. I did one of those to my sister's 03 Ford mid size SUV, she's seen a extra 3 miles to the gallon.

    • @fjalics
      @fjalics 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      DOD is nothing like a couple of induction motors in the back. You send amps, it makes power right away. The permanent magnet motor in the front of the cybertruck is more efficient when it's working, but has more resistance when it's not getting amps. Same concept. When you don't need 845hp or 10,296 lb/ft of torque, you don't want to waste your battery. Thing is, the electric can switch instantly, and doesn't need to warm up to run good.

    • @fordcougar99

  • @JakeRobb

    Think for a moment about ice cubes. If you get them from a typical freezer, they’ll be about 0°F (-18°C). You can set an ice cube on a table for a minute, then remove it (before it warms up enough to leave any liquid water behind). The exact spot where it was touching the table will be fairly cold, but half an inch away you’ll barely be able to tell there was any ice there. You can even crush the ice up and spread it around; it still won’t draw much heat out of the table. Solid-to-solid contact simply doesn’t allow as much heat transfer as solid-to-liquid - it has a lot to do with the way the liquid can conform to the surface, so there won’t be any air gaps between.
    Now, do the same thing, but pour some room-temperature water over the ice. The ice will chill the water, and the surface of the table will feel dramatically cooler after only a few seconds of contact with the cold water.
    Now, 0°F is not cold enough to compromise the adhesive, so we bring in the dry ice. Dry ice is generally about -110°F (-78°C). If we spread water on it like before, it will freeze pretty quickly in its presence, and we still won’t get cold enough to break down the adhesive. So instead we use a liquid with a lower freezing point. Isopropyl alcohol freezes at -128.2°F (-89°C), so it’ll stay liquid no matter what in the presence of dry ice. That means it will continue to conduct heat away from the surface and into the dry ice with the efficiency of a liquid.
    As a bonus, isopropyl alcohol is cheap, readily available, pretty harmless on most surfaces where you’d find sound deadener adhered, doesn’t promote rust like water does, and evaporates readily at room temperature, so cleanup is super easy.

    Did the Google research for you: Isopropyl Alcohol has a freezing point of -128 F while dry ice is at -109 F, so the alcohol spreads out the cold onto the surface that you want to remove. It looked really cool with the fog that was generated while you guys did that.

    It’s like soldering. You put a little solder on the tip for temperature transfer to the pad. Alcohol doesn’t freeze instantly like water would. Then transferring the cold to the sound deadening

      Isopropyl alcohol actually has a lower freezing point than the temperature of dry ice.

    Great job welding & cutting and using others' innovative techniques all the while using eye and hand protection. Great examples of skill and safety can be used in all scenarios!

    The dry ice method is pretty awesome! Used it on my van when I was building that out. (You don't need the alcohol for it to work, just crush it up and let the sound deadening pop off itself.)

    If you mix the dry ice with rubbing alcohol right you can make more of a paste consistency, it works a bit better that way.

    That top lid... I'd make it bigger and useful instead of closing it. That way Matt's crew may be filming from that standing on the passenger side and... It can work as an escape lid too.
