  • COVID-19 kinda messed up our chance to evaluate Taiga's Electric snowmobiles this past spring, but recently the company came by our headquarters with its new Orca Electric PWC and Luke got to take it for a spin. and provides his opinion of where he thinks electric motors will go as it applies to the snowmobiling market.

    I would definitely get one if the price went down and the HP went up. A Sea Doo RXT X with 300 HP starts at $15,900 in the U.S. which is much cheaper and much more powerful then the top end Taiga. However, in time I'm sure electric vehicles will come down in price and up in power.

    • @legendfpv

      that's a crazy price to pay

    • @justinblack2936
      @justinblack2936 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're comparing purchase price and not total cost of ownership. To be fair, a battery charge is far less expensive than a fill up. And maintenance is basically zero on electric. Personal preference, but I'd rather pay more upfront and have a ski that's ready to go all the time. But I also don't need 300hp. I have a Yamaha with 160 HP and it's more than enough for me.

    • @Gcrilla
      @Gcrilla 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, 15,900 is website prices. You're really gonna pay 20k. With the fees and dealer fees and a trailer cost.

    • @FarmerFpv
      @FarmerFpv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll never use a 300hp ski to its full potential ever. You may do a few speed runs but that's about it. Unless you're racing all that power on a sit down is worthless.

      There's no special docking station... I have these watercraft and they run on standard J-1772 chargers.. so a standard 115v outlet or if you really want quick charging you get a 220V/50A... the DCFC stations aren't something you install at anybody's personal docks.. those require a massive amount of support from the power company.. we have one getting installed at our marina and it's taken over a year to get everything worked out.

    Great review and I appreciated your honesty on these PWC. In my opinion, it was only a matter of time before PWC became electrified, and for this type of powersports product, it makes good sense on a number of fronts. Taiga has done a great job of really thinking, and rethinking things through to arrive at a product that will become a preferred type of PWC for plenty of end users, rental companies, and others.
    Where I live, there are plenty of lakes that don't allow gas-powered boating, and a growing number of popular waterfront tourist areas and campgrounds that don't care for the noise the PWC emit, so they have started banning them. Not good when you just want to head out on the water and have some fun for a while.
    Taiga has done it up right with their PWC having comparable performance specs as many others out in the market, but take the experience to another level by eliminating having fresh premium fuel (obviously) on hand and the potential for spillage into a water source when refueling, gone is the annual servicing and/or mechanical repairs as Luke noted, but enhance the experience with an ability to change performance abilities on-the-fly (even remotely) which is also a great safety feature for riders of varied abilities, plus the flexibility to charge it in a variety of fashions is great. As Luke noted, there are plenty other features and abilities that make this new offering "Awesome!"
    Hearing just the wind and the waves, and the laughter coming from those I'm towing around when out on the lake sounds great to me. Having an ability to get out on, and enjoy, the lakes that don't permit gas-powered boats eliminates those restrictions and opens up plenty of new places to explorer and enjoy each summer. I won't miss all the annual maintenance either, and 2hrs per session I can certainly live with. No more noise and polluting my local water sources is also a HUGE benefit too.
    Taiga, you have certainly perked my interest and heightened my level of commitment to get one of these innovative machines under my butt when the desire to hit the water arrives.

    I would be much more inclined to buy an electric PWC than an electric sled. Sled trips for me at least are much longer and in places where electricity isn't always available. This would be great to have with a dock charging station. Just like when you come in from fishing you plug in your trolling motor batteries at the dock. Great idea.

    It would be a major upgrade if the batteries are removable like some EV scooters are. Therefore you can just swap the batteries and continue on. No need to wait for charging and the empty battery can then be the one charging on the "side lines". If not the upcoming Ford F-150 Full EV will be a great addition to have if your going full EV mode in life when it comes to mode of transportations. If the Ford can charge a home it will definitely charge this EV Jet Ski.

    how are these not covered with small battery solar pulse chargers?

  • @pjbuckmaster
    @pjbuckmaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yeah but how much are batteries when they need to be replaced and can the garage mechanic do this. Those batteries are expensive and I would be willing to bet that it would have to be installed by the dealer so that it could be programmed. That’s two down sides right there. A gas powered one can last forever if taken care of and if not, anyone with some mechanical skills can replace a top end, saving the user several thousands of dollars. If you want to go electric, it has to be cheaper or people will not buy it. Why would I buy electric for use on the lake with a 2 hour ride time, when the gas will double that and it takes 10 minutes to fill up and back at it. I think people use these more then just for a few hours a day, the people that I know anyway.

    • @snowtrax
      @snowtrax  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Okay, you're assuming the batteries will die before the warranty runs out. Don't think that would be the case. How much is a full engine replacement on a gas-powered PWC? I bet nobody wants to do either...

    • @pjbuckmaster
      @pjbuckmaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      SnowTrax TV most of the time though you don’t have to do full engine replacement. You will however have to buy a full new battery. I am just saying that is a down side. I see people with 20 year old jet ski’s on the lake. You will have several battery replacements on these things in 20 years. Plus just like anything with batteries, do we really believe they will last longer then things that use the same batteries. Yes I know they are larger but they still have a short life. That life is also shortened when left uncharged, in the example you gave of when done just leave them and come back after winter and charge them. Those batteries will not last like that. Another down side is where is the charging station and who is going to pay for that. That is just things that are a down side. Faster and easier to load gas a bring it in my opinion. I also keep all my engines up myself and do proper winterizing and I don’t have problems. I am not saying they don’t have their uses and pros but until they get the price lower then gas, there is no incentive for people to buy them. It is great that they are trying to make head way but all you have to do is look at the market for electric cars.

    Seems very anti right-to-repair considering the diagnosistics are sent to a dealer which then can order the part.
    Can the end-user get access to the same diagnostics and order OEM parts?

    can someone make a decent electric snowblower already though. even the 'best' ones are not where near as powerful at getting through heavy snow as the gas snowblowers.

    Initial cost is more but factor the lack of money spent on maintenance and the longer life span and suddenly its a lot cheaper.

    no oil or gas worries, just batteries and electronics worries and will it go from point A to Z without die-ing a low voltage death.

    I wouldnt trust this company. I ordered an Orca on the 1st day they allowed pre-orders.. I then messaged them to ask if they have any plans to come to Ontario to show the PWC and let people see it in person and they ignored my message. I saw that they recived and read my question... sad to say but i cancelled my order. How can I trust them to trouble shoot any future issues if they cant even respond to a simple question about where will they be displaying the ski

      That's unfortunate that you had a bad experience, but because they didn't answer your email the entire company must be corrupt? Your reaction seems a bit heavy handed in my opinion.

    • @StarkVandalez
      @StarkVandalez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@snowtrax Well for starters I never said they were corrupt. I said Trust. Like I don't trust them to handle customer service issues if they can't even handle some simple questions now. They are a start up, and like every start up they are going to have problems.
      I still want to own an Orca, but i'm going to have to sit out until their first year of having product in the wild. Once i know the machines are well made and their customer service is actually decent.. then i'll buy one.

    • @snowtrax
      @snowtrax  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is much clearer than your original comment. There's a significant difference between lapsing in a reply to a comment and not handling warranty issues. Can't imagine what's being said when I'm slow at responding to comments on here...

    • @StarkVandalez
      @StarkVandalez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@snowtrax Well when I mentioned my pre-order and pasted my order number, you would think they might actually respond.. even if to say "we'll get back to you on that" - I ran a business for 7 years. Its not easy.. But customer service needs to be a priority.

    • @snowtrax
      @snowtrax  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StarkVandalez Again, I understand where you're coming from and appreciate your frustration. I still feel your reaction felt more like an overreaction. Did you make any further attempts to reach out by phone or another email or do a Google search to see if your question was available online? I've worked in customer service for awesome companies and the reality is some guys suck at it. Doesn't mean the company is shady or the product sucks. Not trying to start an argument here, just saying you're basing your assertion of untrustworthiness of an entire company on the customer service skills of one guy who failed to reply to your email. In my opinion, that wouldn't be enough to make me cancel my order.

    "cheap to maintain"
    Well it better be after getting punched out by the heavyweight pricetag. And that goes for cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, PWC's, or anything else with a stack of expensive batteries onboard.
