- Oakland A's vs. Detroit Tigers 8/25/90. Cecil Fielder was the third player, and only Detroit Tiger, to homer over TIger Stadium's left field roof. Harmon Killebrew (1962) and Frank Howard (1968) accomplished it before him, and Mark McGwire was the fourth and last player to homer over the roof in left field in 1997.
If anyone needs a reminder, Dave Stewart was an absolute beast as a starting pitcher at that point in his career.

Cleveland kid here- went one time and in the mid 90's, fell in love with it as soon as I walked out onto the upperdeck. I had never felt so close to the field.

This was back in the day - baseball was the national pasttime and these old stadiums were the perfect venue to take it all in. Sure miss those sweet times.
Tiger Stadium was a joy to watch a ballgame in. Might not be so, if one got stuck behind a girder, but who cared? Mike Illitch let is go to crap, so he could get a new ballpark, with lots of corporate boxes and fans pushed further away from the field. I hate Comercia Park.
@@dougbrowne9890 Comerica Park is the worlds largest frying skillet. It's flat and wide open with very little shelter from the sun. Even on days when the temps are in the low 70 degree range it is BRUTAL taking in a game there during the day. The sun just fries you there.

I was at work, listening to the game on the radio. Paul Carey made the call. I freaked out. When people asked me why, I told them that only two other guys had done it, and Fielder was the first Tiger. My boss told me to calm down. That was hard to do, I wished so much that I could have been there to see it.

I witnessed the home run my Killebrew. I was in Detroit in 1962, before catching the train the next day to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic Training. I was sitting back a ways in the lower deck looking right down the third base line.I watched him hit the ball and it went up an disappeared. The ball never came down for me to see. I never saw it again because of the 2nd deck overhang in Tiger Stadium. They later announced it was the first ball ever hit out of Tiger Stadium in left field.
Random Fact: The cameraman was sent to Toledo after this game.

Not entirely true. The A's "Oakland" script has been modified from a thinner to a bolder cursive font on their jerseys. The Tigers now have a cursive script on their road jersey as opposed to the block "Detroit" font, plus the olde english D has been modified on their home jersey. Minimal modifications with the remainder of the uniforms remaining basically the same.
These back to back 50hr seasons by Fielder were fun to watch back in the day, almost forgot about these seasons.
Love how Cecil had his jersey unbuttoned. Folks were so relaxed back then. Cecil must have felt like a giant making his round to home as everyone stood for him.

This was the greatest game I ever saw in person. Not only did Fielder put it over the LF roof, but he put one in the the CF upper deck bleachers. On top of that, Canseco and McGuire went deep. Better yet, John Shelby finished a single short of hitting for the cycle, but he had an infield dribbler where he was clearly safe at 1b, but was robbed by the umpire (under modern replay he would have had it!).

I like those "old school" stadiums. Ball parks had character & charm back in those days.
How many newer parks have you been to though? Off the top of my head Petco, Oracle, PNC, Camden, Citizens Bank and Citi Field are really neat and still have a distinctive "baseball feel" unlike many of the old multi-purpose behemoth stadiums. But it's okay to be nostalgic if that's what you grew up with, at least you're watching the right sport!

I was there that game! Sitting in the bleachers, I loved going there for $5 on a sunny hot day. It was a moon shot seeing that think keep rising and clear the roof.

they're not the same. The D on the uniform is the same as the one on the hat now. The rounded D is much better looking on the uniform and the D on the hat can stay right where it is.

The new shirts sport a more pointed and less bold "D" just to match the one that graced the cap since the 60's. Nothing wrong with having more than one official logo and both are better than the cartoonish tiger coming out of the D on the mid 90's road caps.
Fun fact: Cecil and his son hit the same amount of homers in their MLB careers (319).

Tiger stadium never should of been destroyed. Everybody loved the park. I was there many times. Grew up in Redford and Farmington hills. 1957-1984.

I feel the same way about the Oakland Coliseum, not as historic as old Tigers stadium, but the site of many glorious days of A's baseball including six pennants and four world series titles. I attended my first game there in 1969 and would hate to see them tear it down.

I had a job late 80s that took me all over the country, and I tried to see as many ballgames as possible. I went to Tigers Stadium on a chilly day, and saw Sweet Lou hit one in the upper deck RF. Fantastic ballpark! After the game, I bought a bag of burgers at the White Castle across the street.

@@victorbonilla4634 The camera guys have no idea when a ball is going to hit the roof. If they focused on the roof, they would miss every other home run. It is actually pretty hard to track a little baseball in the little viewfinder on those cameras.

Born and raised in Detroit until age 25....spent 33 years in So Cal and now in Beautiful low cost of living South Carolina.
I grew up in Montreal as an Expos fan. I was lucky enough to go to Tiger Stadium a few times as a kid in the very late 80’s and early 90’s. It was baseball heaven. The only other stadium I have been to that rivals it is Dodger Stadium, which is completely different but just as spectacular. Cecil Fielder was one of my baseball heroes as a kid. His incredible power was awe-inspiring and he seemed like a real life superhero to us with his strength and size. Those were the days.
Willie Stargell hit one so deep at the Big O that the Expos organization painted the seat Pittsburgh yellow in his honour. Classy move. Montreal losing the expos was a crying shame.
The home run was 535 feet into the upper deck at Olymic Stadium.

The closure gave it a comfy,close to the Field feeling. When we played growing up,we always imagined our makeshift fields to be Tiger Stadium...and this is coming from a 54 year Yankee Fan!

When you see the ball head straight back after contact, it means he misjudged it by a minute second. Northrup knew what he was talking about. The same scene played out in the Hollywood movie Major League with Parkman. It was a different ending that time

84sp84 was cocaine common in professional sports prior to the steroid era? It was definitely a magical era. Now it seems players are bigger and stronger, but not as animated as they were in the 80s-early 90s.

This shortage of African American players that the MLB has been concerned about for years now ( contrary to your anonymous sources that you're misrepresenting as proof ), is actually misleading. Black players from foreign countries are heavily recruited to come play in the US and it's obvious when you watch any game of your choice. African Americans prefer football and basketball. Let's be realistic.

The number one reason why there s so much poverty in the black community is because of the amount of deadbeat dads. Over all black men dont take responsibility for their kids..there's no family Dynamics and it creates a cycle of poverty that lasts for Generations, yet black people just want to stick their head in the sand when that subject comes up and prefer to play the victim and blame game..
The foul ball, third pitch, going straight back, means that Cecil knows how to time the fastball. That will shake the confidence of the pitcher. 2 pitches later, he hung the same pitch. Boom.
Cecil is a great guy. When I was a kid I was sick in the hospital and he was kind enough to visit me. He told me he was gonna hit me a HR that day and I said gee Cecil, what I'd really like is a triple.
Love these memories of Tiger Stadium. I went to dozens of games there since I was 8 years old I've got tons of memories. Cecil was there 2 put butts in the seats. And that's exactly what he did. Everyone came out to see Cecil hit a homerun. I was at a game where he almost cleared the roof. The ball landed just a couple feet foul on top of the roof in left field and roll back down. We almost got to see one. Left field it's more of a challenge then right field. Norm Cash 4 times to right field, Jason Thompson twice, Kirk Gibson a few times and Lou Whitaker once. I was at that game when Lou hit it over. I saw the ball go up and it never bounce back down on the field and we're all asking each other did that go out? Found out after the game it certainly did. Man I miss Tiger Stadium.

I remember seeing Joe Carter, John Olerud, and Candy Maldonado beat the crap out of us at a game. I think it was like 14-4. Jays fans traveled well. 30% Jays fans there I would say.

He definitely tore up the league back then. No denying it. However, the ball bouncing off his head for a homerun was a funny, freak play. You can't deny that. The fact it happened to the guy who was jabbing needles in his and his teammates' asses in bathroom stalls and who would later go on to get kicked out of a Mexican league for banned substances make it a little funnier. He was booted from a Mexican league for banned substances in a country where steroids are practically over the counter. Some refer to Mexico ad "God's Blindspot." (Of course, I never would.) Was he using horse steroids? Perhaps illegal horse steroids?
Currently, you can pay Jose $40 or $50 and he'll send a happy birthday text to someone. For $5,000, he'll take you bigfoot hunting topped off with UFO spotting. That alone definitely makes it okay to joke about him, he's obviously not taking himself too seriously. (Full disclosure if I had $5,000 just sitting around and no fear of my wife's reaction to the decision, I would 100% go bigfoot hunting with him. If anyone could deliver a live sasquatch, I'd bet it's Canseco. Come to think of it, selling the photos would turn the trip into a profit...dammit, I'm practically losing money by not going. I doubt he'll ever meet me and "slap a hata" as he likes to say but if he does, I'll take the "hata slap" I deserve like a man with no complaints. Plus, it would make everything that much more hilarious. Lifes easier when you don't take the small stuff so seriously.
A little foreshadowing? On the third pitch, the announcer remarked that if he had made contact that ball might have been hit out of the ballpark. Two pitches later, BOOM!
2 great aspects of this highlight are that there’s no bat flip and the the people in the stands don’t have their faces buried cell phones.

Third to hit it over the Left Field roof. Many players have hit balls out of Tiger Stadium, over the Right Field roof. Norm Cash, Kirk Gibson, Rupert Jones, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle and others.
Met Cecil at the Rich Martin’s All-star Baseball camp at Hofstra University back in 95. Man I never saw anyone hit a baseball in person as far as him. Of course he used a metal bat just for fun and hit a few off the building across the street in left field. Great watching him play.

I was watching the game when Cecil hit that one. As I recall it was estimated to have gone 551 feet.
I was there for Al Kaline Day 08-02-70. The Twins were in town for a double header that day. Killebrew hit 2 of the longest HRs I've ever seen that stayed IN Tiger Stadium. In game 1, the 1st one went deep into the upper deck in left-center above the 370' mark; the 2nd one, in game 2, went DEEP into the right-center field upper deck halfway between the 365' mark and the 440' mark. (Just short of under the big scoreboard!)
I remember that game. I was there, 3rd baseline 8 rows up with my parents and brother.

I was 9 years old sitting high in the right field upper deck (second deck lol) and never saw the ball. All I remember was the stadium exploded. The passion of the fans back then was awesome. No empty seats and they appreciated the game and so did the players.
I was working crowd control and out in the concession area when I heard the crowd erupt. Dammit ☹️
Ha! I was at this game with my dad. I was a huge A's fan and was so pumped to see McGwire and Canseco (both also homered). Anyway, I looked down at the program when this happened, and when I looked up it saw the ball bouncing on the roof. What a memory

I remember early eighties, when Sparky Anderson got there we would go out there for like two bucks and sit in the bleachers Upper Deck in the sunshine. They used to let you bring in your own bag full of food if you wanted. As long as the drinks were in styrofoam cups and stuff. So we would always pour in the Bacardi rum with the Coke nice and strong and the ice and seal the Styrofoam cup and just walk right in and they would just give a quick look to make sure. Great times man great times! Beach balls flying all over centerfield. The 1984 Tigers with the 35 - 5 start in the first 40 games of the season. And then of course the World Series championship. I would give anything to go back to 1984 and relive it all

one of the great ballparks from the early 20st century, some amazing highlights. mark steroids mcguire would be the 4th right hander to hit one out to left. 30 went out to right, norm cash had 4. babe ruth hit a "ruthian" homer to center that went out when it was single deck. also where lou gehrig would take himself out of the line up, and where he'd start his last game. and if you're old enough you'll remember reggie jackson's homer during the all star game that hit the lights in right field. perfectly built that only the strongest players could hit them out of the stadium.

What’s interesting is the all-star game in Detroit in 1951 & 1971 both games had 6 home runs an all-star game record throughout all star history until last years all star game had 10 home runs that game in DC.
I cannot possibly fathom anybody hitting one out of the stadium to dead center in Tiger Stadium. That sounds more like Babe Ruth folklore than reality.

Seeing this massive home run reminds me of the mammoth shot hit by Tony Perez in the 7th game of the 1975 World Series at Boston. Perez's blast that night may have been a red-seater at Riverfront. I've seen closeups of the look on Perez's face as he hit it: it was a look of real determination. Cecil Fielder was a great player who just played hard, day in and day out. That's the type of play Sparky Anderson inspired.

I was at that game with my wife and daughter. We had good seats; 2nd row on the 3rd base line. But it was sunny and hot that day, and we sat in the sun for far too long. We were sunburned big time. Kinda put a damper on that monster 'bye, Felicia.' I do remember the way it sounded. Sweet.

I vaguely remember going to the Tiger Stadium as a kid and watching Cecil fielder in the very early 90's. Went on 1 or 2 school field trips to games out near the outfield. Loved catching balls from batting practice. Had a Texas rangers outfielder throw me a ball before the game started. He threw it over the heads of 20 or so kids squished into the fence begging and screaming for the ball. He just looks up at me and throws it over them right to me. I still have the ball and won't forget it. I also remember one time Scotty Bowman sitting up in the bleachers. Good times. :)

Saw Frank Howard hit one off of Chris Short at Connie Mack Stadium in 1963 which cleared double decker bleachers in left center, sandwiched between a billboard sign & a light tower before clearing the roof!
Saw Frank Howard hit one off Ken Johnson (knuckleballer) in the old/old original Yankee Stadium in the upper deck in left field (an absolute bomb in 1968 or 1969. The ball landed above the aisle that separated the box and reserve seats. Absolutely crushed Kenny Johnson's knuckleball.
I forgot just how big Cecil Fielder was, especially in that era. Just an absolute big dude.
July 1992 Cleveland Municipal Stadium. It was turn back the clock game between the Tigers and Indians. 1932 replica uniforms. 8th inning Albert Belle hits a multi run home run to give the Tribe the lead. I'm in section 37, halfway up the lower deck and here comes Cecil to the plate. Tattoos a ball hit so hard, it went way over my head like a Lazer shot to the upper rows of the lower deck. Anyone else would of hit the upper deck on a deep fly or just over the fence. This was memorable, Tigers win with an incredible display by Mr Fielder.
Fast forward several years and MTV used to have the Rock a d Jock celebrity softball game for lots of fun. Low and behold Cecil comes to the plate and launches a missed. He proclaims this as a tribute to Jimmy Piersall by running the bases backwards ( Piersall did do for his 100th homer)...except Cecil got his wires crossed and ran backwards to 3rd, 2nd, 1st and back home. Oh well, good times by all...Cecil, Mackey Tettleton and Rob Deervall had my respect. 😅

The Tigers from 1990-1994 had some monster batting orders. If they could have had just average pitching, they might have made some noise in the AL East.
your team should have never moved out of the original sox stadium. it was a horrible place but full of memories..also, bring back the 87-90 unis that bobby thigpen was sporting when the dumb asses made him save 56 games but still he was no Eck!! HOF is more meaningful..
Man, I'll never forget walking that long crosswalk to get to tiger stadium. Walking to your seat as a kid was magical. One weird memory I had as a kid was buying a hot dog. I swear they were boiled in a tube sock. I still remember the smell of tiger stadium. That, and the Boblo boat.

That's Jim Northrup, a World Series hero for the Tigers' '68 champions. He strung three seasons of 20+ homers together from '68-'70 for Detroit. Liked his baseball, hunting and taking a drink. We have been stuck with Jim Price 25+ years since he got broomed, Northrup passed away in 2011.
Rbi 3…man I live in the past and this is absolutely the best times of my life and miss it so bad..me and my brother kept up with all sports heros and went through many nintendos segas PlayStations playin with the greats..I still have legends of the diamond and og Nintendo I break out every 7 or 8yrs…tiger stadium is my all time favorite..

I remember that year, he chased 50 and got it. ESPN carried his every at-bat until he got it. 51 and 44 homers, back-to-back years. He played in Japan prior to that.

When I was a kid we lived in Cleveland in the early 90s saw some terrible baseball. I would go early for bp and Rob deer Albert Belle etc hit tons of homeruns. When Cecil got up there it was a totally different sound. He crushed many balls out of Cleveland stadium. Tremendous power.
