    In my opinion, I don’t think Jason and Lupita’s character at the end were smiling at each other. The look he gave her was of distrust but she knows that he knows she’s actually the tethered

      Japple or Red told him while she was waiting for Adelaide to come find them. Or he could just tell something was off. I kinda thought he started thinking she was different when he saw her use the scissors to kill the last twin.

    I’m surprised no one picked up on or talked about the whistling in the movie and how significant it is. The real Adelaide whistled when she became frightened. It was a self soothing method. She began whistling in the house of mirrors when she became scared and her doppelgänger copied her. She whistled when she came in contact with her doppelgänger after all those years in the scenes where they invaded the family’s home. The real Adelaide or “Red” tried to whistle at the end when she was dying. The whistling gave it away that the switch took place the whole time. I knew right away after that.

      True but my perception of the whistling in the house could have been used as intimidation by the real Adelaide or her doppelganger, as her doppelganger copied it when they were children as a way to scare her I thought. I don't think the whistling in the house gave it away at all.

    To answer some of your questions:
    I think the point of the Hands Across America bit is the fact that the tethered are trying to prove they are just as human as those above. Hands Across America was planned to literally span across mountain ranges and rivers like the tethered did.
    In reality. Hands Across America failed. But the tethered were so committed to their cause that they did what those above failed to accomplish, but because they were down below, they couldn’t have possibly known that Hands Across America failed. So to them, they’re just doing what they assume those above did.
    I think this is most shown by Red’s line when they ask “Who are you?” And she responds “We’re Americans.” This film is truly about America and I think when you stop trying to think about everything on a global scale and just focus on America, some of the movie starts to make some more sense, to me at least. Especially since not EVERYONE has a tethered since it is a government experiment after all, it would only be something going on specifically in America.

    • @AllegedlyDani
      @AllegedlyDani 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      romeostruedude of course! I wasn’t saying that the tethered are better than the surface people. I just meant that by performing Hands Across America, it was the tethered’s way of proving they’re better than Americans.
      But just because the tethered believe they’re better, doesn’t make it true. So you’re absolutely right!

      Danny’s Disaster what makes the Hands Across America moment great, is how it’s tied to the Lupita reveal at the end. So yes, symbolically it has all these deep meanings. It’s also just a plan from a young girl who saw it as a possible defining moment in her childhood. That’s when her development stopped, and she latched onto the memories of the topside world that she had.

    • @ssippilandelta4365
      @ssippilandelta4365 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Danny’s Disaster that’s is a great break down, this movie is also is about the conscious (the Tethered) vs subconscious of the mind, and the Tethered also a representation of the family personal insecurities. It’s like people do a lot of great things and at the same time we spend too much time and energy on things that doesn’t make sense.

    • @Delboy0

      It is even more simple than that. On the TV the hands cross America promo was the last thing the real Adeline saw before she went out and was kidnapped and replaced, so planning her revenge, that resonated with her to recreate when she was free.

    The Hands Across America was because the "Tethered" had fulfilled their purpose, and there was no point in moving around anymore, because the "Tethered" are mimicking their counterparts. They were uniting together as one. I think Jordan Peele was trying to symbolize that the "Us" is their own enemy, because all we do is fight with each other rather than working together as a country. Just my interpretation.

    I think it’s the sort of film that doesn’t make complete logical sense as it is one giant allegory for class, privilege and our perception of ‘otherness’. You essentially have two of the same person but one thrives above because of the privileges she’s afforded and one suffers because she is not afforded the same opportunities. Really telling that in the end the “bad” cloned one thrives above because she’s given the privilege of education and money and societal structure and becomes a good, loving person (Though she forcibly takes this for herself) and the “good” human one is forced to suffer as the lowest of the low class wise through no doing of her own (she was forced) and becomes vengeful and murderous. Kind of like, no one is born “good” or “bad” but how the surroundings we grow up in make us who we are.

    I do have an answer about Hands Across America and other stuff. The first thing you see in the film is a commercial of a movement called Hands Across America back in the 80s. This impacted the real child Adelaide before she was switched. She then used this movement as a basis for her revenge plan on her copy that took her place that she worked on for so long but made it super simple bc the tethered are basically brain dead. All the tethered then followed her as explained by Red because they knew she was different. She could speak unlike them and had intellect because she was a real person even though they didn't know. As for the clothing and scissors, Red (Real Adelaide) explained that her plan needed to be perfect so she can get revenge and everyone from below and surface to the top. Everyone wearing all red, a glove, and a small but affective tool for anything in there way was just a way to get everyone to be on sync bc it was a basic plan.

    • @llangstonz
      @llangstonz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Another reason she chose Hands Across America fro her plan is when her doppelgänger took her thriller shirt and went back up to the surface she was left only with her Hands Across America T-shirt on and I'm guessing it left a lasting impression on her.

  • @jamesosullivan6055
    @jamesosullivan6055 5 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    1. I caught the twist when you first see them together. The difference between her and her Tethered and the way the rest of them act is too different. She's the only one who can verbalize, she's the only one who seems to have a grudge against her other half.
    2. This did play out like a large extended Twilight Zone movie. And thus, I don't think we as an audience NEED all the answers. The Hands Across America, the everyone having their own "Tethered"- I don't think the movie NEEDS to answer these questions. If a Twilight Zone episode shows all it's cards, it loses it's mystery and eeriness.
    3. Lupita deserves the Oscar. Honestly I genuinely forgot that they were played by the same person and then remembered and was in complete awe at how transformative it was. Lord, the physical tics, the voice shift, the face acting. Just jarringly good.

    • @gnarmis
      @gnarmis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I felt disappointed and unsatisfied about the whole "they clone people underground to control you" angle -- a more mysterious cause would've suited the movie much better. Some shadowy people are able to exactly clone everyone, even cross generationally (?), and mimic everything the others are doing to control them -- but the clones are forced to mimic the originals in actuality? If it's more effective as an allegory, don't verbalize a disappointing cause in the movie, let it stand on its own on imagery and symbols!

    I liked that they hinted at the twist in the fight scene.
    Through out the film they show you that the tethered people have a higher tolerance for pain. And, when they were fighting other tethers, the film showed you had to use excessive force to kill them.
    Her swinging the fire poker into Tim tethered characters head which would take any human down, but he laughs it off and keeps going.
    The daughter back being broken and she keeps laughing.
    Her getting sliced up through out the fight and stab directly in the abdomen, but she keeps going. Now, before the twist you think it's just a mother's determination to get her child back.
    But, it only takes one stab to the surface lupita and she's down right away.

    • @ryanthelion9430
      @ryanthelion9430 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Actually I think it might be a clever misdirect. The initial encounter is described as a trap with pluto setting the trail of oil to the car forcing everyone to get out. Jason then as you see puts arms up and walks backward. So pluto mimics this and walks backwards into the fire revealing that Jason can control his tethered. However I believe this entire scene is the real trap and the oil lined up to the car is a smoke screen for the real trap. We as the viewer like the family believe that Jason can "control" his Tethered. Yet as Jason walks further backwards he is actually walking closer to Red who is hiding and waiting. This is the real trap, Red has executed a plan that involves Pluto sacrificing himself in order to give the family/ Jason the illusion of control when in actuality the tethered/Red are in control. Its a nice paradigm shift showing the tethered are now in control not their counterparts

      @Halal Quinn there is a theory that Jason probably had a relationship with his tethered when they travelled to lake house. I think his tethered switched spots with him. Notice how Lupita's character tells Jason to stop walking towards the fire. When they are at the beach, Jason is digging a tunnel. Jason is also not playing on the beach, he goes directly to the same place where Lupita's tethered switch her. But that's just a theory.

Because Red explained in her story of the princess and her shadow of how her children where born. Plus did any one else catch how Reds children were born they died the same way. Like the tethered daughter was born laughing and when she died, she was laughing. And Jason was born from fire, and he died in fire. Did anyone else see the Easter egg of "Get Out" when Jason was eating fruitloops with out milk. Genius!

      What I don't understand is how he could have switched when his tethered double has a very visible scar. It's not like he could have wandered off at the beach, swapped with his double and had the scar heal ready for that night.
      And I guess theoretically he could have switched at some other time, maybe in a previous summer, but it'd be bad storytelling not to set up something so important.

  • @brandonperkins9096
    @brandonperkins9096 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    I don’t get the Hands Across America thing BUT I think I understand why Jason was able to “control” his double.
    You said yourself that Lupita (forget the characters name) was able to have that connection with Jason because he took after her, in that they were both kind of like the tethered.
    By that logic, since Red is actually from the surface, then her son would also be a little bit like her in that sense, meaning they both would be a little like the people on the surface.
    So that’s why Jason could connect with his double. They were BOTH part surface and part tethered. But I think that Jason was able to control the double rather than vice versa because Jason was still “more” surface and was able to control the more primal version.
    That or maybe since Jason was able to control the fire (with his ring) then he was able to therefore control Jason?
    Hmm, maybe I’m not as sure as I thought.

      Brandon Perkins I was thinking this:
      Any of them could have controlled their tether if they tried. Or at least influenced them. But she said his tether was always weird and animalistic, so he was simply more coachable. But the human got in some kind of rhythm with him or something. He entranced the tether with his trick and then controlled him. But he didn't really control him. To me it looked more like the tether was deliberately copying the boy. So with the car on fire he just got his attention and got the tether to copy him again. Like playing a mime game with a child.

  • @KateBelangerPhotography
    @KateBelangerPhotography 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Okay, I just saw this movie so I didn’t have the full time to think about this, but here’s my shot at some of your questions. I thought one of the main messages of this movie was that so much of life is purely about how you are born, not your innate capabilities. The original clone of Adelaide was easily able to assume her life above ground and be successful. The clone’s themselves seemed to be a metaphor for the poorest of people. Hand Across America was Red’s first and only encounter with helping the poor. I think the child’s logic argument here definitely sticks- she was what six or seven when they got switched? Not entirely sure what phase two was supposed to be after the whole holding hands thing, though.
    The tethered are all linked to those above ground because they share a soul. In the cloning process, apparently, you can not create a brand new soul. Not sure when exactly they were all abandoned down there, but Red says that they slowly became insane. School stuff must’ve been there in the beginning when the “project” was fully funded. In their insane state, they mindlessly recreated that which was going on above them. It seems like the tether provided that kind of spatial connection as well as some personality aspects.
    Okay, so dancing. The only thing I can think of for that is that this was the newly switched Adelaide’s first real emotional connection with the real world. So, since they are tethered, Red felt that in someway too below ground. It seemed like at first Red’s dancing was horrible and then it slowly became closer to real life. So instead of this mindless mimicking, she was able to make a real connection.
    Absolutely no explanation for the outfits. Why the red jumpsuits and how the heck were they all wearing the same clothes as their “surface” counterparts? The scissors Red references in her original speech saying something like, “the above girl got soft pretty presents, but all the below girl got were hard, sharp things that cut her hands.” Hence, gloves? They also must be symbolic of the clones severing their tether with the above people. No idea how they actually obtained this stuff though.
    There was certainly very strong symbolism running throughout this movie just like get out, so I can’t wait to rewatch and see what I catch.Definitely some plot holes, but this was my best shot.

    I believe the reason Jasons tethered backed up into the fire was because he was sacrificing himself to trap the real Jason for Red. Jason figured it was a trap and started moving away in hopes that he would sacrifice himself to save his family. And Tethered Jason showed it was the right choice by copying him. He showed that if he keeps doing it they would both be scarified cause Tethered Jason probably knew Red was there hiding since its probably her plan.
    And of course i believe Tethered Jason would sacrifice cause he was completely loyal to Red and Red showed and said she didnt care about the "family" around her. She never mourned any of their deaths at all.

    I thought ‘Us’ was a dope film. I’m reading the contrary down my newsfeed, though. 🤷🏿‍♂️ Ironically, it seems to be only coming from (wait for it)... “us”... lol.
    But in all seriousness, I think Jordan Peele did a great job pushing the envelope in the horror genre. I think it’s the polar opposite of “trash”. I found it to be a masterful work of art. I think creating a film that’s allegorical for duality that you can view for a second-time from a reverse angle to see an entirely different perspective and understanding (which is the concept of duality) is brilliant.

  • @AllegedlyDani
    @AllegedlyDani 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another question kinda answered (maybe):
    A lot of people are wondering why the tethered didn’t leave sooner and my response to this would be that I’m thinking the movie is symbolic of the biblical rapture.
    Jeremiah 11:11 in the Bible roughly translated is “and I shall bring upon them a terrible evil, and though they will cry out to me, I will not listen.” Which is referring to the end of times. In the Bible, the rapture occurs when God says it’s time, and it results in chosen people disappearing.
    This would explain why Red is adamant on the entire events of the movie being an act of God. Adelaide and Red were chosen to enact the rapture essentially, which is what makes them special. And think about it.....what would be the perfect way to make hundreds of thousands of people disappear???? By replacing them with doppelgängers.
    This is also represented by the escalator, the stairway to heaven. And why the tethered are mimicking everything in the sewers. “As in heaven so on earth” is essentially what that is referencing.
    I think this movie unlike Get Out is EXTREMELY symbolic which is why there’s so many questions in the end.
    Let me know what you guys think about all of this

    The Hands Across America, I think, is supposed to be a commentary on the film's commentary of class relations. Hands Across America was done to fight against hunger, poverty, and homelessness in America. The tethered doing it was supposed to be a protest against the way that they had been treated, or rather the way that they had to live hard lives while their surface counterparts got all they wanted (like similar class differences in the real world). The other thing that Peele might have done as a metaphor is that the line of tethered also works as a nod to the idea of redlining with a physical red line. Just my thoughts on it at least.

    I thought Jason's Tethered version was mimicking him, which started early on when they were playing, so that's why Jason walked backwards until his tethered version was in the fire (and strangely stayed in the fire until he died).
    Another question. The intro only mentions tunnels in the United States and that alone makes you question how the Tethered could act out their normal selves spatially, but what if the normal person goes overseas? It makes no sense.
    Another thing that makes no sense is Gabe's irrational pleading with the Tethered in the house, like "take the wallet", "take the boat", etc. Did he really think they were after something material?

      I think the sister had tethered qualities too though, the way she ruthlessly killed those twins and her other half in the car and seemed to be proud of how many kills she was gathering was very tethered like in my opinion. I feel like the reason why Pluto copies Jason is because Pluto is essentially feral. And when he met Jason, he wanted to try to understand him. One point I noticed was with the dancing scenes at the end between Lupita and Red. Both were putting in ample amount of time and effort to become skilled at something (dancing) same amount of work and dedication while only one was reaping the benefits from it (being cheered on and praised in front of a crowd) I saw it as a metaphor for impoverished people that work just as hard as privileged people but their work goes unnoticed and isn’t rewarded the same way due to their status (being “below ground” and oppressed).

    The point you missed about the dance was that they finish differently. The tethered version above leaps for the sky and the one below does a move where she caves in. The thing is that the tethered are connected to the ones above so since the real Adelaide was below she never had to mimic her tethered version above and the doppelgänger I guess grew apart or independent above. Where the tethered just mimic without thought, Red was forced to live her life based on how Adelaide lives hers because the families tethered versions would mimic their doppelgängers life. She basically Abraham raped Red because he thoughtlessly would be mimicking the above dad.
    I think the son was able to control his tethered version because maybe him and his doppelgänger shared half a soul and were more closely bonded.
    I don’t know it’s a lot to think about, but it’s all up to interpretation like Peele said. So really any theories possible.
