Her reprise is one of my favorite villain songs. While "Tangled" isn't my favorite film, Gothel is one of the best villains. I hope the remake casts her right!
@@lainiwakura1776 Apparently it's already at that point. Likely, if the Broadway version (announced recently) comes out first and is successful, it'll fast-track the remake. Seeing as I'm not a fan of Flynn Rider of most of the soundtrack (don't hate me), I'm curious to see his depiction in the remake and what new songs they have. For Gothel, I'd want Meryl Streep, Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Cher (duh) or Kathryn Hahn to play her--but I don't know if KH or SS can sing. I'd also like Amanda Seyfried as Rapunzel (she can pass for her 20s, but I think Disney would want someone who could pass for 18).

She even gave Cassandra a music box to remind her how much she “loves her” just to keep her away from her business and then called her a pest when she was away. The thing I also like about Mother Gothal, besides being a manipulative Disney villain, is that she has a fear of getting older and desires to stay young forever. It’s a common thing that we all wanted to remain youthful for either awhile or we all seek immortality. But having that much yearning to use the power of the Sundrop flower is like a drug addiction.

I also like that the audience knew from the beginning she was the villain, yet it didn't take away from the story at all. Especially in the case of victims of gaslighting, which can be a bit more subtle, especially with the "joking", it isn't always as obvious, and if you're an ACTUAL victim of gaslighting, it's the sort of thing you hear a lot. As someone who's dealt with a similar situation, this movie did make me question my own situation, since mother gothel is a lot like my abuser, and if it weren't so clearly spelled out from the beginning that she was the bad guy, I wouldn't have gotten it, or I would have dismissed it as, oh, she became a villain at the end because of this. But she was the villain all along, there was no surprise reveal for the audience.
I don't have any gaslighting abusers in my life or family thankfully. But, I can't deny that when I saw Tangled in theaters. Even though I obviously knew that Mother Gothel is a villain. That part when she tells Rapunzel that she is beautiful yet points at herself in the mirror saying that she was there and acting like it was a joke. I knew that it was supposed to be a villain move, but, I always felt like I could see people or even parents making that kind of joke innocently all the time. Though, neither of my parents have ever done it. Yet, still, Mother Gothel must use that kind of 'joke" on Rapunzel all of the time which makes sense and sadder for her. ;(
That is right. And now, cutting off Rapunzel's hair actually has a ton of significance to me now. Obviously, the hair doubles as Gothel's control over her, but also cutting it off makes you feel bad. The same way cutting someone out of your life that was supposed to love you and you them feels like a huge loss. You can brush off a break up, because a boy/girlfriend is not supposed to be your rock in the way a parent is. Though I had a toxic relationship with my mom and even though I hated her by the time I left, it still felt like a huge lose. You get so used to their company and feeling like they are your only provider and friend that cutting their strings on you makes you feel lost at first, but also a huge relief. Having other people in my life to catch me made it way easier.
This is a good video but I feel like it could have been better. As a couple other people in the comments have pointed out, in Tangled the series we find out that Gothel is the biological mother of Cassandra. And while admittedly we don't get a lot of backstory between Gothel and Cassandra, of the stuff that we do see, she was doing the exact same thing to Cassandra as well. It was revealed in season 3 (don't remember the episode) fat gospel gave Cassandra something important to her Cassandra ran off and then Gothel was like "finally that annoying kid is off my back." (I don't remember the actual line and I couldn't be bothered to look it up). Oh I was not expecting this one SO SOON......I already commented on the previous and mentioned this but is totally worth repeating, Mother Gothel is the most underrated of the rogue gallery of Disney villains and in my opinion, one of their BEST, She is the perfect representation along with Frolo and Gaston of a great human Villain, no magic, no powers, no brute force, pure genius, manipulator been able to deceive, Raps, Eugene, the Stabbington brother and get what she wants all the time, I love Gothel as a villain and in my humble opinion, the last GREAT pure Disney Villain, yes I know Turbo goes next but he is more of a great Twist villain, she is the last time a good one was use without hiding, just from the start to finish she was the main villain, she was amazing.... Tangled should have been a WAY BETTER 100th anniversary film than what we got.

Very good. Mother Gothel is definitely the scariest Disney Villain because he is actually like a real abusive and manipulative parent and unlike Frollo she is not a ruler, so in a way she is very realistic. I do like that may be beautiful on the outside, she is not beautiful in the inside. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Would’ve been interesting if Rapunzel said “All my life you told me the world is a dark and cruel place, but now I see the only thing dark and cruel about are people like you.”

Gothel is literally my mom. In hind sight, I think my mom hated the way Mother Gothel was written because she saw herself in the villain. Everything down to relative isolation because 'the world is bad; (I was homeschooled). Though she's my biological mom, and she wouldn't discard a child (likely just because the law would get her for it), it really seems like my mom is only self deluded enough to believe she loves anyone, and seems to have had us for personal gain (long story). Gothel has a lot of power without supernatural ability or political influence. She absolutely destroys and plays everyone she meets and is very flexible in doing that. She is also shown to be physically stronger than she appears, since she takes down the Stabbingtons, one shots Eugene and overpowers Rapunzel in a 1v1 (off screen). And as we know Rapunzel is extremely athletic and a lot stronger than she should realistically be, probably because of the sundrop power (looking at the series). It also makes sense if you consider Gothels background as a disciple of Demanitus/Zan Tiri. But that's probably too subtle for modern audiences.

About the hair, cutting off Rapunzel's hair actually has a ton of significance to me now. Obviously, the hair doubles as Gothel's control over her, but also cutting it off makes you feel bad. The same way cutting someone out of your life that was supposed to love you and you them feels like a huge loss. You can brush off a break up, because a boy/girlfriend is not supposed to be your rock in the way a parent is. Though I had a toxic relationship with my mom and even though I hated her by the time I left, it still felt like a huge lose. You get so used to their company and feeling like they are your only provider and friend that cutting their strings on you makes you feel lost at first, but also a huge relief. Having other people in my life to catch me made it way easier.
Mother Gothel and Frollo would make one hell of a duo
While both are manipulative parents, the only difference is one is a religious nut case and the other is a horrible mother to Cassandra who cares about herself and maintaining her youthful beauty.
It could get so toxic so quick; if Frollo didn't keep showing her with attention, Gothel would become insecure (and lethal), and if she flirted with anyone, Frollo would deem her unfaithful (and go crazy).
He would never work with them but Scar, like Mother Gothel, is very manipulative and both use allies (whom they manipulate to meet their goals) and manipulate a golden haired child.

Her reprise is one of my favorite villain songs. While "Tangled" isn't my favorite film, Gothel is one of the best villains. I hope the remake casts her right!

Seeing as I'm not a fan of Flynn Rider of most of the soundtrack (don't hate me), I'm curious to see his depiction in the remake and what new songs they have.
For Gothel, I'd want Meryl Streep, Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Cher (duh) or Kathryn Hahn to play her--but I don't know if KH or SS can sing. I'd also like Amanda Seyfried as Rapunzel (she can pass for her 20s, but I think Disney would want someone who could pass for 18).

I also like that the audience knew from the beginning she was the villain, yet it didn't take away from the story at all. Especially in the case of victims of gaslighting, which can be a bit more subtle, especially with the "joking", it isn't always as obvious, and if you're an ACTUAL victim of gaslighting, it's the sort of thing you hear a lot. As someone who's dealt with a similar situation, this movie did make me question my own situation, since mother gothel is a lot like my abuser, and if it weren't so clearly spelled out from the beginning that she was the bad guy, I wouldn't have gotten it, or I would have dismissed it as, oh, she became a villain at the end because of this. But she was the villain all along, there was no surprise reveal for the audience.
I don't have any gaslighting abusers in my life or family thankfully. But, I can't deny that when I saw Tangled in theaters. Even though I obviously knew that Mother Gothel is a villain. That part when she tells Rapunzel that she is beautiful yet points at herself in the mirror saying that she was there and acting like it was a joke.
I knew that it was supposed to be a villain move, but, I always felt like I could see people or even parents making that kind of joke innocently all the time.
Though, neither of my parents have ever done it.
Yet, still, Mother Gothel must use that kind of 'joke" on Rapunzel all of the time which makes sense and sadder for her. ;(

And now, cutting off Rapunzel's hair actually has a ton of significance to me now. Obviously, the hair doubles as Gothel's control over her, but also cutting it off makes you feel bad. The same way cutting someone out of your life that was supposed to love you and you them feels like a huge loss. You can brush off a break up, because a boy/girlfriend is not supposed to be your rock in the way a parent is.
Though I had a toxic relationship with my mom and even though I hated her by the time I left, it still felt like a huge lose. You get so used to their company and feeling like they are your only provider and friend that cutting their strings on you makes you feel lost at first, but also a huge relief.
Having other people in my life to catch me made it way easier.

This is a good video but I feel like it could have been better.
As a couple other people in the comments have pointed out, in Tangled the series we find out that Gothel is the biological mother of Cassandra. And while admittedly we don't get a lot of backstory between Gothel and Cassandra, of the stuff that we do see, she was doing the exact same thing to Cassandra as well.
It was revealed in season 3 (don't remember the episode) fat gospel gave Cassandra something important to her Cassandra ran off and then Gothel was like "finally that annoying kid is off my back." (I don't remember the actual line and I couldn't be bothered to look it up).
So that's how I think this video could have been even better had you gone into some of the details from Tangled the series as well.

Oh I was not expecting this one SO SOON......I already commented on the previous and mentioned this but is totally worth repeating, Mother Gothel is the most underrated of the rogue gallery of Disney villains and in my opinion, one of their BEST, She is the perfect representation along with Frolo and Gaston of a great human Villain, no magic, no powers, no brute force, pure genius, manipulator been able to deceive, Raps, Eugene, the Stabbington brother and get what she wants all the time, I love Gothel as a villain and in my humble opinion, the last GREAT pure Disney Villain, yes I know Turbo goes next but he is more of a great Twist villain, she is the last time a good one was use without hiding, just from the start to finish she was the main villain, she was amazing.... Tangled should have been a WAY BETTER 100th anniversary film than what we got.

Very good. Mother Gothel is definitely the scariest Disney Villain because he is actually like a real abusive and manipulative parent and unlike Frollo she is not a ruler, so in a way she is very realistic. I do like that may be beautiful on the outside, she is not beautiful in the inside. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Would’ve been interesting if Rapunzel said “All my life you told me the world is a dark and cruel place, but now I see the only thing dark and cruel about are people like you.”

In hind sight, I think my mom hated the way Mother Gothel was written because she saw herself in the villain. Everything down to relative isolation because 'the world is bad; (I was homeschooled).
Though she's my biological mom, and she wouldn't discard a child (likely just because the law would get her for it), it really seems like my mom is only self deluded enough to believe she loves anyone, and seems to have had us for personal gain (long story). Glad I moved out.
Edit: Cutting off Rapunzel's hair actually has a ton of significance to me now. Obviously, the hair doubles as Gothel's control over her, but also cutting it off makes you feel bad. The same way cutting someone out of your life that was supposed to love you and you them feels like a huge loss. You can brush off a break up, because a boy/girlfriend is not supposed to be your rock in the way a parent is.
Though I had a toxic relationship with my mom and even though I hated her by the time I left, it still felt like a huge lose. You get so used to their company and feeling like they are your only provider and friend that cutting their strings on you makes you feel lost at first, but also a huge relief.
Having other people in my life to catch me made it way easier.
Gothel has a lot of power without supernatural ability or political influence. She absolutely destroys and plays everyone she meets and is very flexible in doing that. She is also shown to be physically stronger than she appears, since she takes down the Stabbingtons, one shots Eugene and overpowers Rapunzel in a 1v1 (off screen). And as we know Rapunzel is extremely athletic and a lot stronger than she should realistically be, probably because of the sundrop power (looking at the series). It also makes sense if you consider Gothels background as a disciple of Demanitus/Zan Tiri. But that's probably too subtle for modern audiences.

About the hair, cutting off Rapunzel's hair actually has a ton of significance to me now. Obviously, the hair doubles as Gothel's control over her, but also cutting it off makes you feel bad. The same way cutting someone out of your life that was supposed to love you and you them feels like a huge loss. You can brush off a break up, because a boy/girlfriend is not supposed to be your rock in the way a parent is.
Though I had a toxic relationship with my mom and even though I hated her by the time I left, it still felt like a huge lose. You get so used to their company and feeling like they are your only provider and friend that cutting their strings on you makes you feel lost at first, but also a huge relief.
Having other people in my life to catch me made it way easier.
