Low-grade ores contain a small percentage of the metal whereas high-grade ores contain a high percentage of the metal. Bioleaching uses bacteria (microorganisms) to extract metals. Bacteria are grown on low-grade ores. Biological and chemical processes form a solution of copper ions called the leachate.
