thank you. the 'leader' of a community i was in just up and decided that he had the right to delete a discord that 'his' community was in - just because he felt like /he/ wasn't using it much. so like 500 people abruptly lost touch with one another and we barely got 60 or 100 folks into a new fan server. then refuses to acknowledge the fan server any more. it made me so fucking angry - because it gave the impression that he felt /he/ owned the community server. like,, hello there were conversations there and friendships and advice and resources that WE built. so yes. thank you for acknowledging that it isn't yours. it's ours - the ours includes you of course, but not solely yours. it gives me some reassurance! even though i'm not an especially vocal or active member of this community.

Hi Hank, You probably won't see this, but I just read your book and it helped me come to peace with the current complexity we are all living in. In the book, April learns or gets at that there is no one truth or way of experiencing a crisis. This made me think: if I must allow the world to be complex, I must give myself also the grace to experience the world complexly. I don't need to feel guilty about my spiraling anxiety about the world and my unwinding sense of peace and time for self-care coexisting. This time will be made no better by sinking fully into tragedy, but I must also acknowledge the tragedy and set it to the side to allow some beauty to come from all this. As Kina Grannis says, life is in the waiting. Thus, I better make the waiting worth living. Thank you for your excellent book and your excellent podcast and videos. This is what I kept thinking about during this video too. Very mixed feelings, but I'm trying to see it from John K's point of view. I guess I couldn't have expected him to keep making TH-cam videos from his living room for the rest of his career, given that he has so many opportunities as an actor. I suppose there were other options besides selling to CBS to keep the show going, but ...??IDK
Personally I'm okay with it. Here's why: it was an impromptu show that grew very large very quickly. John Krasinski is a busy guy with lots of projects and I don't think SGN is something he ever planned to continue for a long time. So if he didn't sell it to CBS then the show must likely would have just ended and that would be that. But now we will get more content out of it, even if John wont be the host. He will still be a part of the show in some way. And it is still free for everyone (it is not going to be behind a paywall on CBS Access like was initially reported)

@@gretchenbrugman9890 Mixed feelings too. The thing is, part of why it's so popular is that it's the right show at the right time. It was born out of a crisis. Home-grown, low-budget, maybe-the-world-isn't-the-dumpster-fire-it-appears-to-be. And seeing a celeb become a TH-camr was part of capturing the zeitgeist of this crazy situation we're all in. So, you take away the celeb, you take away the platform, then add a big budget - well, it's maybe just another meh CBS show. I was surprised it got sold, because I assumed at one point, it would just end. Like, it'd be a sign that things were getting better. John got to go back to work, we got to go back to work, people were on YT less...that kind of thing. If they can make it work, then hell yes. We need a TV show dedicated to good news. And if they do it right, there will be more of them on other networks. If they don't though, and it doesn't catch on, it'll just be seen as another cash grab that failed.
@@lunacouer I hope they can keep the fan/community connection because that was a lot of my favorite thing about it - the fan art, the segments by fans, etc. That seems inherently harder to do on a television network than on TH-cam, but I hope they can make it happen. I have a great respect for John and Hank Green for many reasons. Anyone who has ever done writing , filming , editing and any kind production you know that it is not an easy process , that is if it's something that you want to be proud of. Which takes me to another point those of you whom publish and post content on TH-cam, as Hank is pointing out provide an invaluable service in this age of the "inter-net of things " . Having to earn a living as oppose to living one puts us in circumstances good and bad unfortunately we all need money to have food, a place to live etc.. So. I'm not going to rag on anyone for "getting paid" but remember the inter-net is a powerful technology it has literally opened up the world. So thank you John and Hank, for your integrity to a principle and all of those that contribute to the brilliance that you've created . keep up the great work !

The whole thing reminds me of the old Hollywood model where studios would sign on actors/actresses for exclusive multi-year movie deals - kinda like streaming service are doing now mostly with directors (Ryan Murphy's Netflix deal comes to mind). I had a teacher called critical Al, and he liked to remind all of us to ask ourselves 'what are we willing to sell' as in where is your line. Because if you don't decide your line someone else will. It's just good to know and then you can go in the directions you choose.
I feel like podcasts have held on to the open format for so long cause the best ones aren't the ones with celebrities they're the ones where a specialist (either professional or hobbiest) talk about things that they love that seem boring at first glance but ends up super interesting. A forest ranger talking about my local plants and trees makes me appreciate the maple tree near my bus stop and how weird the root system must look tangled in amongst the buried gas and cable lines. A podcast about linguistics shows all the weird quirks and quibbles of a language that I speak natively but purely based on instinct and now I actually realize that I use "an" instead of "a" if then next word starts with a vowel instead of just shrugging and saying it just feels correct/incorrect. Celebs at Spotify aren't delivering anything I want in a podcast, and it's hard to see a large company investing money in what seems to be (at least in my podcast bubble) largely adult edutainment. Honestly even most of the non-learny ones seem to involve things that giant companies are hesitant of and that they would rather remain neutral about. It's difficult to market soft time filling edutainment as something people should be paying a subscription to a faceless company for instead of just directly supporting the people who make podcasts you already love.

At 1:41 PM on August 26, 2010, blue_beetle (Andrew Lewis) posted "If you are not paying for it, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold". I think this is the first time that statement was made; but, TV and radio has been doing it for years. Until Cable TV came along, nobody payed for TV or radio and; so, we were getting a free product by being their product. I appreciate your passion for your customer and not viewing us as slaves to your content that you own and can sell to the highest bidder; but, rather as partners that support you to provide you with the opportunity to express your art and content.
I'm not mad at creators for taking deals like these, but at the same time, I'm probably just gonna pirate their content going forward - they already got paid handsomely, I don't feel obligated to support them further! I quite like the Patreon model of funding - since that way creators are dependent only on keeping their audience happy, and not publishers or advertisers.
This reminds me of something Noam Chomsky said about the American media. In the case of the media, at first glance it appears that the product is the newspaper, and the buyers and sellers the readers and newspaper companies, respectively. However in reality the product is the audience, sold by the newspaper companies to the advertisers. But I think perhaps in this case the platforms want you to think that the content is the product, you the consumer, and they the seller/provider. ohhhh yes, some of my friends and I had this exact discussion the other day! There's a new show that Darren Criss is in, a lot of my friends have been fans of Darren since he was in Starkid shows, followed him to Glee, and then to his Broadway shows and other things he's been in since. So one of them posted a screenshot of his instagram advertising this new show. Then I informed them it was on Quibi and literally all of them (after I explained what the hell quibi was) were like, 'oh ew, no thanks. we'll find some other way to watch it' 😂
I was so sad when LPOTL moved to Spotify. I keep all my podcasts in one app (podcast addict) and I listen to the backlog most of the time. When they moved, so did their entire backlog. I was two years behind. I can't deal with going to another app for JUST one show, so I've sadly had to give up on one of my favorite podcasts for now until I have the mental energy to listen to two years' worth of episodes via spotify.
I'm incredibly tired after work & so I wasn't taking this in at all. I really wanted to hear it though so I tried slowing it down to 0.75x speed, & it worked! My frazzled brain could suddenly take it all in. So my top tip for any tired nerdfighters out there; if it is going too fast try slowing down a touch & see if that helps 😊👍🏼
Podcasting really is such an interesting beast, like you touched on. Even despite the fact it's called PODcasting, like, it began on iPod, it could've been exclusively held by Apple in that sense forever, but as far as I know, it's always been open like it is. But yeah, Spotify throwing down exclusivity is.... not great. I even get wary of iheartradio buying up the How Stuff Works podcasts and so many others, even if they never put them exclusively on the iheartradio platform, I've noticed a lot of changes that make me sad (all of the show notes and stuff being taken offline for How Stuff Works podcasts. I didn't go to the landing page on the specific websites for those podcasts often, but it was nice knowing they were there if I wanted them).
Just a healthy reminder that this is the 12th straight vlogbrothers video with an All-Star Smash Mouth lyric as the title and that may be the single best thing so far about 2020
I would love to see Hank go on Rogan's show to discuss this issue. I think they could have a very meaningful and productive deep dive into the whole thing that would be beneficial to both audiences. Once again Hank you provide a very thoughtful, reasoned, and at the end of the day balanced take rather than the hot takes that I'm seeing in most other places (not all...there are a few other good ones out there), and as always, I think you for that. Bottom line, there are many potential consequences/outcomes to an event ike this and we don't know for sure how it's going to shake out or how far the reverberations are going to be felt throughout the social internet as a whole. Only time will tell.
To be fair, Spotify is still free to use and you can listen to podcasts in order (which you can’t do with songs in the free version) so at least it’s not completely exclusive
I’ve felt weird about Last Podcast on the Left moving to exclusively Spotify, and while I’m glad they’re getting paid to make their show and hopefully this move making it so they can do more, you hit the nail on the head in explaining what I couldn’t really pin down. Podcasts feel like the most open and accessible platform right now, and this starts to chip away at that accessibility
I used to listen to Howard Stern (sp?) When he went to Sirius XM I did not follow. Didn’t want to pay for something I was getting for free. I feel like this whole thing started with paywall podcast providers like luminary and stitcher. Also - it's just as easy to post a podcast to Spotify as it is to post a video to TH-cam. I think the most interesting thing about the JRE announcement is that Spotify will have exclusive access to the video version on the Podcast. PS - I listen to Dear Hank and John and The Anthropocene Reviewed both on Spotify.
Hank, I really really reaaaaaaally wish I could agree with you on people not caring much about celebrities... unfortunately I have been running away from celebrity culture for all of my adult life and part of my teenage life without a whole lot of success. :P Then again, I don't live in the US, so perhaps there are some cultural differences there. But you can see the extent of how much effort and energy I have put into escaping my own culture which is majorly focused on celebrities. I spend most of my time on the intertubes consuming and writting stuff in a foreign language after all. I know celebrity culture in the US is the mainstream too, just that there are at least options for avoidance I guess. Or just in english in general, not only stuff from US. For me personally, that is the disease of the century. Societies give little to no recognition to those who truly deserve it, and tons of people dedicate significant part of their lives, attention and even life changing decisions to so called celebrities which are often unqualified, ignorant, and too full of themselves to care about others. Feels like we put ourselves right back into a caste system. Ah well, I'm ranting too much already. o/

It seems like exactly the same model HBO and Showtime use, taking a well known IP or even celebrity, building a show, and having it on a new "platform" that requires subscription. I don't see any particular problem with it. If people want that person or show badly enough to follow them, everybody wins. If not, the platform loses. Long podcast rant: This is just a small part of the video, but I liked your point about podcasts. I've been podcaset listener since the beginning of Welcome to Night Vale (which in the grand scheme, isn't very long, but it's about 1/3 of my life, which is significant!) and podcasts like this have always felt like an escape from commercialized media, especially before they had actual sponsorships and only had wacky/surreal "commercials" during the show. But I also support artists getting paid. I don't mind listening to an ad midway through/at the end, or supporting artists on patreon or through other monthly donations (Max Fun -esque) because I want to support their shows and the artists behind them. I don't like that some podcasts are being put behind a pay wall (Amazon Prime, Spotify) because it feels so anti-podcast and goes against the way I've felt about them for so long. To me, Podcasts were an indie/nontraditional/acessible artform that I fear is losing touch with its roots, and I am so grateful to those that are staying more accessible and still finding ways for the artists to get paid (like DH&J, WTNV, Maximum Fun pods, etc)
The other portion of the Mixer move for Ninja is it set the precedent when it comes to negotiating power for streamers. Other platforms, specifically twitch and youtube, have now had to scramble to put together contracts that will keep their big names intact, whereas before there was little to no value placed on individual streamers. He's not my favorite, but he gave streamers a considerably bigger voice in the industry.

i don’t know why but i was very surprised to hear him mention last podcast on the left. When they switched to Spotify i almost stopped listening just bc it was yet another service that i had to download/interact with and i really didn’t want to do that. I still listen to them and i’m glad they can make more things now with that, but it still felt strange and weird...
Stitcher has been doing this for years, only the last ten episodes of any podcast that they're associated with are available the normal way, the whole back catalog is only available on stitcher premium. And you get access to bonus episodes and to normal episodes early. This is an interesting model where you don't have to pay to listen but you do if you want to listen to old episodes. Freakonomics is a good example.
Hank is MY celebrity who is telling me about Quibi, and telling me it is a silly idea. HE IS the famous person who is telling me about it. Lol. What shall I do? Well, I shall keep binging 1-year old Vlogbrothers videos on TH-cam!
I will say that the difference with podcasts, especially regarding switching to be a Spotify exclusive, is that you can can access everything for free if you don’t want to pay or can’t pay money. Obviously there are other podcast apps that you have to pay for, but I digress. Twitch and Mixr on the other hand, unless the creator is kind enough to upload their streams to their TH-cam channel after they air live, the only way you can watch their content is to pay for it

In the book, April learns or gets at that there is no one truth or way of experiencing a crisis. This made me think: if I must allow the world to be complex, I must give myself also the grace to experience the world complexly. I don't need to feel guilty about my spiraling anxiety about the world and my unwinding sense of peace and time for self-care coexisting. This time will be made no better by sinking fully into tragedy, but I must also acknowledge the tragedy and set it to the side to allow some beauty to come from all this. As Kina Grannis says, life is in the waiting. Thus, I better make the waiting worth living. Thank you for your excellent book and your excellent podcast and videos.

Discussion: John Krasinski selling SGN to CBS?
This is what I kept thinking about during this video too. Very mixed feelings, but I'm trying to see it from John K's point of view. I guess I couldn't have expected him to keep making TH-cam videos from his living room for the rest of his career, given that he has so many opportunities as an actor. I suppose there were other options besides selling to CBS to keep the show going, but ...??IDK
Personally I'm okay with it. Here's why: it was an impromptu show that grew very large very quickly. John Krasinski is a busy guy with lots of projects and I don't think SGN is something he ever planned to continue for a long time. So if he didn't sell it to CBS then the show must likely would have just ended and that would be that. But now we will get more content out of it, even if John wont be the host. He will still be a part of the show in some way. And it is still free for everyone (it is not going to be behind a paywall on CBS Access like was initially reported)

The thing is, part of why it's so popular is that it's the right show at the right time. It was born out of a crisis. Home-grown, low-budget, maybe-the-world-isn't-the-dumpster-fire-it-appears-to-be. And seeing a celeb become a TH-camr was part of capturing the zeitgeist of this crazy situation we're all in.
So, you take away the celeb, you take away the platform, then add a big budget - well, it's maybe just another meh CBS show.
I was surprised it got sold, because I assumed at one point, it would just end. Like, it'd be a sign that things were getting better. John got to go back to work, we got to go back to work, people were on YT less...that kind of thing.
If they can make it work, then hell yes. We need a TV show dedicated to good news. And if they do it right, there will be more of them on other networks. If they don't though, and it doesn't catch on, it'll just be seen as another cash grab that failed.
@@lunacouer I hope they can keep the fan/community connection because that was a lot of my favorite thing about it - the fan art, the segments by fans, etc. That seems inherently harder to do on a television network than on TH-cam, but I hope they can make it happen. I am glad John is staying on as executive producer!

I have a great respect for John and Hank Green for many reasons. Anyone who has ever done writing , filming , editing and any kind production you know that it is not an easy process , that is if it's something that you want to be proud of. Which takes me to another point those of you whom publish and post content on TH-cam, as Hank is pointing out provide an invaluable service in this age of the "inter-net of things " . Having to earn a living as oppose to living one puts us in circumstances good and bad unfortunately we all need money to have food, a place to live etc.. So. I'm not going to rag on anyone for "getting paid" but remember the inter-net is a powerful technology it has literally opened up the world. So thank you John and Hank, for your integrity to a principle and all of those that contribute to the brilliance that you've created . keep up the great work !

I had a teacher called critical Al, and he liked to remind all of us to ask ourselves 'what are we willing to sell' as in where is your line. Because if you don't decide your line someone else will. It's just good to know and then you can go in the directions you choose.
I feel like podcasts have held on to the open format for so long cause the best ones aren't the ones with celebrities they're the ones where a specialist (either professional or hobbiest) talk about things that they love that seem boring at first glance but ends up super interesting. A forest ranger talking about my local plants and trees makes me appreciate the maple tree near my bus stop and how weird the root system must look tangled in amongst the buried gas and cable lines. A podcast about linguistics shows all the weird quirks and quibbles of a language that I speak natively but purely based on instinct and now I actually realize that I use "an" instead of "a" if then next word starts with a vowel instead of just shrugging and saying it just feels correct/incorrect. Celebs at Spotify aren't delivering anything I want in a podcast, and it's hard to see a large company investing money in what seems to be (at least in my podcast bubble) largely adult edutainment. Honestly even most of the non-learny ones seem to involve things that giant companies are hesitant of and that they would rather remain neutral about. It's difficult to market soft time filling edutainment as something people should be paying a subscription to a faceless company for instead of just directly supporting the people who make podcasts you already love.
So you could almost say,

I think this is the first time that statement was made; but, TV and radio has been doing it for years. Until Cable TV came along, nobody payed for TV or radio and; so, we were getting a free product by being their product. I appreciate your passion for your customer and not viewing us as slaves to your content that you own and can sell to the highest bidder; but, rather as partners that support you to provide you with the opportunity to express your art and content.
I'm not mad at creators for taking deals like these, but at the same time, I'm probably just gonna pirate their content going forward - they already got paid handsomely, I don't feel obligated to support them further!
I quite like the Patreon model of funding - since that way creators are dependent only on keeping their audience happy, and not publishers or advertisers.

This reminds me of something Noam Chomsky said about the American media. In the case of the media, at first glance it appears that the product is the newspaper, and the buyers and sellers the readers and newspaper companies, respectively. However in reality the product is the audience, sold by the newspaper companies to the advertisers.
But I think perhaps in this case the platforms want you to think that the content is the product, you the consumer, and they the seller/provider. But really the product is the audience/consumer, effectively being sold by the content creator to the platform so they can then sell it to advertisers.

ohhhh yes, some of my friends and I had this exact discussion the other day! There's a new show that Darren Criss is in, a lot of my friends have been fans of Darren since he was in Starkid shows, followed him to Glee, and then to his Broadway shows and other things he's been in since. So one of them posted a screenshot of his instagram advertising this new show. Then I informed them it was on Quibi and literally all of them (after I explained what the hell quibi was) were like, 'oh ew, no thanks. we'll find some other way to watch it' 😂
I hope either John or Hank has a copy of the All Star lyrics with the bits that have already been used crossed off.

I was so sad when LPOTL moved to Spotify. I keep all my podcasts in one app (podcast addict) and I listen to the backlog most of the time. When they moved, so did their entire backlog. I was two years behind. I can't deal with going to another app for JUST one show, so I've sadly had to give up on one of my favorite podcasts for now until I have the mental energy to listen to two years' worth of episodes via spotify.
Both John and Hank showed up on my For You on Tiktok. John's tiktok actually made me laugh. If I was going to follow one, I would follow John.
I'm incredibly tired after work & so I wasn't taking this in at all. I really wanted to hear it though so I tried slowing it down to 0.75x speed, & it worked! My frazzled brain could suddenly take it all in.
So my top tip for any tired nerdfighters out there; if it is going too fast try slowing down a touch & see if that helps 😊👍🏼

Podcasting really is such an interesting beast, like you touched on. Even despite the fact it's called PODcasting, like, it began on iPod, it could've been exclusively held by Apple in that sense forever, but as far as I know, it's always been open like it is. But yeah, Spotify throwing down exclusivity is.... not great. I even get wary of iheartradio buying up the How Stuff Works podcasts and so many others, even if they never put them exclusively on the iheartradio platform, I've noticed a lot of changes that make me sad (all of the show notes and stuff being taken offline for How Stuff Works podcasts. I didn't go to the landing page on the specific websites for those podcasts often, but it was nice knowing they were there if I wanted them).

I would love to see Hank go on Rogan's show to discuss this issue. I think they could have a very meaningful and productive deep dive into the whole thing that would be beneficial to both audiences. Once again Hank you provide a very thoughtful, reasoned, and at the end of the day balanced take rather than the hot takes that I'm seeing in most other places (not all...there are a few other good ones out there), and as always, I think you for that. Bottom line, there are many potential consequences/outcomes to an event ike this and we don't know for sure how it's going to shake out or how far the reverberations are going to be felt throughout the social internet as a whole. Only time will tell.

To be fair, Spotify is still free to use and you can listen to podcasts in order (which you can’t do with songs in the free version) so at least it’s not completely exclusive
I’ve felt weird about Last Podcast on the Left moving to exclusively Spotify, and while I’m glad they’re getting paid to make their show and hopefully this move making it so they can do more, you hit the nail on the head in explaining what I couldn’t really pin down. Podcasts feel like the most open and accessible platform right now, and this starts to chip away at that accessibility

I feel like this whole thing started with paywall podcast providers like luminary and stitcher.
Also - it's just as easy to post a podcast to Spotify as it is to post a video to TH-cam.
I think the most interesting thing about the JRE announcement is that Spotify will have exclusive access to the video version on the Podcast.
PS - I listen to Dear Hank and John and The Anthropocene Reviewed both on Spotify.
Hank, I really really reaaaaaaally wish I could agree with you on people not caring much about celebrities... unfortunately I have been running away from celebrity culture for all of my adult life and part of my teenage life without a whole lot of success. :P
Then again, I don't live in the US, so perhaps there are some cultural differences there. But you can see the extent of how much effort and energy I have put into escaping my own culture which is majorly focused on celebrities. I spend most of my time on the intertubes consuming and writting stuff in a foreign language after all.
I know celebrity culture in the US is the mainstream too, just that there are at least options for avoidance I guess. Or just in english in general, not only stuff from US.
For me personally, that is the disease of the century. Societies give little to no recognition to those who truly deserve it, and tons of people dedicate significant part of their lives, attention and even life changing decisions to so called celebrities which are often unqualified, ignorant, and too full of themselves to care about others.
Feels like we put ourselves right back into a caste system.
Ah well, I'm ranting too much already. o/

I don't think any of this was confusing or unknown to people. It seems like exactly the same model HBO and Showtime use, taking a well known IP or even celebrity, building a show, and having it on a new "platform" that requires subscription. I don't see any particular problem with it. If people want that person or show badly enough to follow them, everybody wins. If not, the platform loses. And that's their gamble to make.

Long podcast rant: This is just a small part of the video, but I liked your point about podcasts. I've been podcaset listener since the beginning of Welcome to Night Vale (which in the grand scheme, isn't very long, but it's about 1/3 of my life, which is significant!) and podcasts like this have always felt like an escape from commercialized media, especially before they had actual sponsorships and only had wacky/surreal "commercials" during the show. But I also support artists getting paid. I don't mind listening to an ad midway through/at the end, or supporting artists on patreon or through other monthly donations (Max Fun -esque) because I want to support their shows and the artists behind them. I don't like that some podcasts are being put behind a pay wall (Amazon Prime, Spotify) because it feels so anti-podcast and goes against the way I've felt about them for so long. To me, Podcasts were an indie/nontraditional/acessible artform that I fear is losing touch with its roots, and I am so grateful to those that are staying more accessible and still finding ways for the artists to get paid (like DH&J, WTNV, Maximum Fun pods, etc)

The other portion of the Mixer move for Ninja is it set the precedent when it comes to negotiating power for streamers. Other platforms, specifically twitch and youtube, have now had to scramble to put together contracts that will keep their big names intact, whereas before there was little to no value placed on individual streamers.
He's not my favorite, but he gave streamers a considerably bigger voice in the industry.
This video has given me significantly more information about what Quibi is than any of their advertising.

When they switched to Spotify i almost stopped listening just bc it was yet another service that i had to download/interact with and i really didn’t want to do that. I still listen to them and i’m glad they can make more things now with that, but it still felt strange and weird...

Stitcher has been doing this for years, only the last ten episodes of any podcast that they're associated with are available the normal way, the whole back catalog is only available on stitcher premium. And you get access to bonus episodes and to normal episodes early. This is an interesting model where you don't have to pay to listen but you do if you want to listen to old episodes. Freakonomics is a good example.
Hank is MY celebrity who is telling me about Quibi, and telling me it is a silly idea. HE IS the famous person who is telling me about it. Lol. What shall I do? Well, I shall keep binging 1-year old Vlogbrothers videos on TH-cam!
I will say that the difference with podcasts, especially regarding switching to be a Spotify exclusive, is that you can can access everything for free if you don’t want to pay or can’t pay money. Obviously there are other podcast apps that you have to pay for, but I digress. Twitch and Mixr on the other hand, unless the creator is kind enough to upload their streams to their TH-cam channel after they air live, the only way you can watch their content is to pay for it
