The game has 20 hours of amazing music, and it's really well suited for the game it fits. Graphics are great, good missions. It's a quality return of the 1990's space game (even late 80's) on my Amiga. It's the best 30 bucks you will spend on a game this year so far.
@@Hulkster84 Welp, their loss. I gave Epic Store one chance by buying Borderlands 3 from there, and that's the only chance they'll get, not buying any more games from them. Their launcher and their store are both abysmal compared to Steam and GOG.
It's Privateer with modern graphics. I'm in love. I play it in old-school mode though, I prefer Privateer style gameplay to the Freelancer style gameplay that the assists give you.
Everything from the cockpits, to the space stations, to the guild offices, and even the main characters outfit all look like they were 'borrowed' straight from Privateer and I love it

it's funny I was JUST playing Freelancer and thinking this is probably the last time I'm going to play this game because of RGO, when I got the notification for this video. It's about time a game like this came out! Thanks for the great review as usual
Picked up this game yesterday just out of curiosity. I have to say while I do take some issues with some aspects of the game, this has to be some of the most stylish space pilot combat I've seen. The vibrant colors as you zoom past stars and blow up enemy vessels is pretty damn satisfying. Love the cockpit user interface, and how you can drop in your own playlist of music, which honestly is a godsend because I personally didnt like most of the music picked out for the game. This title has a particular charm to it that I must havent seen in other space games. It's not perfect, but I think it's worth checking out
Of course music tastes are subjective. But, wow, do I disagree with your comment on the music. While certain radio stations are certainly not my style, there are some really great songs in there. And the country-style-radio really fits the wild-wild-west-in-space theme the game is going for. But, as stated, subjective tastes all around, so have an upvote for a good comment regardless.
Yeah I was looking forward to this game. Saw the review and was like sweet I didn't know it was coming out soon. Then he said Epic store and no fucks now given about this game at this time lol
I still play the hell out of the original Rebel Galaxy and have really been looking forward to Outlaw. That said, I'll be waiting a year, because I refuse to have anything to do with Epic. Damned foolish decision on Double Damage's part, signing on with those con-men.
I had a lot of fun with this game. if you're having problems early, get to the next system that has a cop shop and buy yourself a modified cop cruiser. one of the best fighter-type ships in the game, and you can get one really early.

The mod support is supposed to allow for full customization and replacement of ships, weapons, and campaigns. I hope it garners a community to actually do so.
The claustrophobic fixed-view cockpits and low-res Dos style panels and info screens is meant to pay homage to Wing Commander, and specifically Wing Commander: Privateer. In so, so, so many ways RGO is the same game. The number of easter eggs is immense. Also, running RGO on an i5-9600, GTX 1080 Ti at 2k resolution and everything cranked up to high and I'm getting butter smooth framerates, so there's another benchmark for you.
I love the face pace yet deep look into the games you do I hope your around for a very long time. The review you did on this game was spot on it made me buy it and I can't be more happy with the game.
Rebel Galaxy Outlaw definitely looks like an interesting title. Its nice to see a game like this get some much deserved attention. The $30 price point is a major plus of course. Thanks again Karak!
I had no idea you were such a Freelancer fan! I played the *shite* out of that game throughout Middle School and High School. To this day, one of my favorites. I've been looking for something to fill that slot and this review just told me how to get my fix in the modern world.
btw, the reason you noticed ships running into you was because if you are flying a bigger ship, or have your throttle not at max, they will use their thrusters and move well in front of you, then spin around for a head-on pass. if you want to stop them doing that, don't rely so much on the autosteer, and pay attention more to your distance to target. watch to see if the target you are following uses their afterburners, and if they do, you need to do that as well to stay with them.
Freelancer was amazing. It actually made me feel like Cowboy Bebop with the jump gates. But X2 the threat was one of my favorite space games ever. How does this compare to that? If you ever played it...
Easily worth a buy, once it comes to Steam. A bit underwhelmed at weapon, component and definitely ship variety (many things end up being straight upgrades rather than different types of "good"), though I'm interested in seeing if the mod community gives it some love.
Freelancer is one of my top 3 games of all time. It's such a shame after all these years there's really no sequel. This games footage really took me back to a time where bulky PC's and CRT's were the norm.
It was almost 13 minutes into the video when I finally realized that the ship outline he was shooting at the whole time was representing where his weapons would fire from, and not the outline of a ship he was chasing. Good lord
I'm so glad this game turned out well! I was hesitantly excited for it, and now I'm thinking I'll play this and hold off on the new No Man's Sky update until it's been patched.
I disagree. I think doing this would set a precedent that it's okay to have broken or completely incomplete games at launch for $60 as long as you say that you'll be working on it over time. NMS was an awful game at launch and Hello Games will never do enough to make up for the outright lies they put forth to gullible consumers imo.
I played the first Rebel Galaxy. RGO looks... not bad in general, but I'm afraid it's not my expectation. Gonna stick to Starpoint Gemini series, especially since they announced Starpoint Gemini 3. Maybe I'll give it a try once it's off Epic Store.
Hey Karak, great review as always. Just wanted to ask if you’re planning to do an update video to review the performance and graphics of the PS4 and switch versions since PS4 is the system I would be playing this game on.
Sadly, no capital ships, no buy for me. Broadsides WWII style drew me to the original title like a moth to a flame- broadsides and science fiction are my kryptonite.
Given that the most potent weapon in RG1 was the measly mining turret... :P I mean, more power to you, if that's your thing but the broadsides in RG, for me at least, were always that "extra" weapon you take on with you, rather than the main thing you punch holes with.
At 10:23 you mention "turning off dampeners". I assume this is the option that allows ships to fly in a way more consistent with newtonian physics? Question: Is this something that can be toggled (as with Freelancer), or is this a "hold down to turn off but default is on" option? To date, Freelancer flight mechanics rules with its combination of simplicity and versatility. Other games either forget that space is a vacuum, or just try too hard to turn every ship in to a 1960's complicated nightmare of controls, forgetting that "computer support" and "fly by wire" is a thing, even today, let alone in the far future in a spaceship. Still looking for a Freelancer successor, and have been eagerly awaiting this game, but I need to know about the flight mechanics before I jump in only to be disappointed. Again.
Good stuff! Would you say this is the entry to pick up to convince someone on the space sim genre or is this something you pick up only after you are already invested?

The first game wasn't great, I did however enjoy it for what it was, I'm looking at this and everything seems so clean and neon/vibrant which I think is a shame as the previous showings industrial/dirtier look worked quite well.
Yeah, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a fantastic game. I just wish the save system would be changed to just save anytime like many pc games. Also looking forward to the modding scene for this game.
Great review, though i wish you spent a bit more differentiating it from the first one. It seems this one keeps you in smaller ships ... is that a plus or minus?
@@justinleonard1992 yeah, that's what i mean though. I loved the first, and wanted more. I liked the combat. Not sure if i should get this.. but probably will.
Ended up playing the old one on PS4 thanks to this review - it's actually a pretty great game so far! Look forward to the PS4 release of this game. Thanks for the review @ACG
Can somebody please answer these 2 questions: 1. Is it kind of open world - you can fly for long stretches rather than in small "spaces", passing multiple space stations/events around? 2. Do you only have small 1-man ships, i.e. no growth, nor armada of ships options?
If you play the "sound" in a game, that is exactly the same thing as music. Both are sources of audio. You play sounds and don't get copyrighted then you should be able to play music.
Once I finish few games I want in my spare time, and probably play Cyberpunk for a while then by that time most of the games that are postponed for one year to be released on steam for example will be available and steeply/heavily discounted :) definitely looking forward to jump on new Rebel Galaxy.
Since the game allows for outside music, can you connect it to Spotify or ITunes, like how Beat Hazard did it around 10 years ago? Also is it missable?

I have seen this game on preorder and it looks interesting. Review, is as always pure class.
You make some of the best game reviews on TH-cam. No BS straight shooter man !!, So tired of the GameS*it.com and I*N.com paid review garbage ! Thank you for sharing.
thank you
The first game wasn't great, I did however enjoy it for what it was, I'm looking at this and everything seems so clean and neon/vibrant which I think is a shame as the previous showings industrial/dirtier look worked quite well.
Yeah, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a fantastic game. I just wish the save system would be changed to just save anytime like many pc games.
Also looking forward to the modding scene for this game.
Glad to hear that it isn't a turd. Now just have to wait for the Epic exclusivity to end.
Best reviewer out here. Always watch your videos before playing any game. Cheers! \m/
Great review, though i wish you spent a bit more differentiating it from the first one. It seems this one keeps you in smaller ships ... is that a plus or minus?
The difference is night and day, in this one you pilot fighters, instead of the battleships like the first one. :/
@@justinleonard1992 yeah, that's what i mean though. I loved the first, and wanted more. I liked the combat. Not sure if i should get this.. but probably will.
does this game have ultrawide support?
Ended up playing the old one on PS4 thanks to this review - it's actually a pretty great game so far! Look forward to the PS4 release of this game. Thanks for the review @ACG
You bet
Old one is much better. This looks like a shitty game now.
Can somebody please answer these 2 questions:
1. Is it kind of open world - you can fly for long stretches rather than in small "spaces", passing multiple space stations/events around?
2. Do you only have small 1-man ships, i.e. no growth, nor armada of ships options?
If anyone knows … Would you say there's much longevity in the game? Are there worthwhile ships to buy that will take time to earn for example?
If you play the "sound" in a game, that is exactly the same thing as music. Both are sources of audio. You play sounds and don't get copyrighted then you should be able to play music.
Sadly thats not how it works
Once I finish few games I want in my spare time, and probably play Cyberpunk for a while then by that time most of the games that are postponed for one year to be released on steam for example will be available and steeply/heavily discounted :) definitely looking forward to jump on new Rebel Galaxy.
I’ve never played the first
Game, I do have it on my PS4 from plus, is it worth my time?
Scratches the naval battle itch for me. Think black flag without the lame AC extras。
Isn't this the Galaxy on Fire 2, back few years ago, on mobile devices?
I'd buy it, if not for Epic Store. Liked the first one, especially the music. Those bulky cockpits are pretty much taken from Privateer.
You are my favorite game reviewer. Legit and hilarious!
Am I the only one who laughed at the frozen hot dogs thrown against car doors?
More like choked on my beverage, but yeah. LMAO.
Since the game allows for outside music, can you connect it to Spotify or ITunes, like how Beat Hazard did it around 10 years ago? Also is it missable?
