The Führersonderzug was pretty much Third Reich's Air Force One but ran on tracks and on coal instead. The Fuhrer used it often to travel across Europe as needed, from visiting military headquarters to meeting foreign diplomats. The train cars also had his personal high command staff officers and radio stations to issue important strategic commands in quick notice during travel given his command over multiple fronts Germany were fighting on. And its schedule was kept confidential enough and its route patrolled enough no Allied fighter attacks or resistance attacks on its was ever reported - its route confined deeper in Germany lines also helped too.
The Railway Museum Bochum also claims to have a Wagon from this Train: Schlafwagen 10222 It hosted US-General Eisenhower, Queen Elizabeth, Schah von Persien and several Federal Presidents of Germany after the war according to the Museum.
The trouble with trains as weapons (offensive or defensive) is that they are somewhat confined to tracks. Any lone saboteur with the proper tools can immobilize it anywhere along its route at their leisure.
I used to think that but it's wrong. There are tracks everywhere and if you destroy them they can be re-laid in hours. It's actual very difficult to destroy a rail line. You have to take out bridges or tunnels and if where there are none you are out of luck. The British invented the bunker buster bomb precisely to collapse a tunnel after they realised that destroying a bridge was too difficult. Yes, to cut a rail line they had to smash a mountain!
@@francisboyle1739 usually saboteurs would target regular military traffic supply and troops transports so there was less security than this particular train. They usually waited until the train was to close to stop before blowing the rail line or doing it in a hard to see place like a sharp bend so the train didn't have enough time to stop. So you'd have the damaged track and the train wreckage to clean up as well. Bridges were harder to destroy but would take a lot longer to replace if it could be demolished.
