So they decided to proceed up Half Dome despite the ranger warning them about impending storms. My friend was in Yosemite that day and said that it was clearly getting cloudy. The ranger checking the permits at the base of Half Dome also warned everyone about the storm. Yet this father wants to take no accountability for his poor decisions? She herself was an adult and also agreed with those poor decisions. The father and his dead daughter are solely to blame.

We where in yosemite that day too. In the valley, you could see and hear the storm coming for some time before the rain started to fall. Yes rangers were on most trails letting people know about the storm front. I hate it for him but he is going down the wrong road. Making it we're nobody can go up half dome will just get more people hurt and never bring his daughter back.

I disagree. If you let people hike dangerous slippery rocks at a vertical climb up and down, particularly since these hikers are not professional rock climbers, the park should fix it. I have personally hiked Half Dome 5 times. It's a renown strenuous hike. Hikers are warned about inclement weather and strenuous conditions. Note: They were using the cable system and not rappelling. Perhaps they weren't used to hiking on granite which is very slippery when it gets wet? I have seen people freeze with fear on the cables and parents haranguing their children to get through this. It's very sad this iconic hike resulted in her death.

I had just spent the whole day with you beforehand, Friday, going out to get your favorite at Olive Garden and venture over to Big-5 to get you some gloves for the cables. I remember being so worried about it, asking "what if you fall!?". "It'll be alright, people will be there to grab onto me", she said this smiling at me, I'll never forget. What an unsatisfying answer that was. I never should've let you go. She was SO excited for this, it was on her bucket list for years, and she did it. She made it to the top. I'll never forget how you smiled at me, the nicknames you made for me, how casually you did crazy, crazy things. I'll never forget all the places we went, the moments we shared. I feel for his loss however, too many people wake up and decide they are going hiking and are not prepared or experienced enough. Plenty of people have gone on this same trail and have come out okay as far as we know. People need to do their research and stop taking risks until they have educated and prepared themselves. You see it in AZ where people are out hiking in 100 temperatures but have no clue what they are doing and always run out of water. Why doesn't he work with local hiking groups encouraging people to not go on hikes like this until they go with a group or take some basic classes. Let's not change the park system for those that aren't ready for this level of hiking in my opinion.

    Half dome - rounded rock.
TH-cam videos show nothing but the cable system. The wood planks are for traction and not meant to be a staircase. My friends ask me to climb it multiple times but I am afraid of heights. Many hikers use a carabiner safety rig to ensue if they fall they are attached to the cables. Carabiner safety equipment is used lot in mountain climbing. There is a selection of confident hikers that don’t use the carabiners and complain about those who do use it, it slows the hike. They rush up the middle occasionally grabbing a cable.
Round rock, domed granite slippery when wet.
So why did dad knowing a storm was coming in allow his daughter to climb without the safety equipment? She had commented people were going too slow. They were going slow because they were using carabiners and or holding onto the cables because it was raining, wet, slippery, and they were being extra cautious. She was trying to pass people, she was impatient and going faster. According to another article.
Take down the entire cable system, no matter what you do you will not slow someone down who is impatient and in a hurry. It is not a staircase. She caused her own death by trying to get down fast.
Dad is diverting blame in an effort to sue the park system or get a settlement. She’d be alive if he told her to be patient, hold onto the cables, and used the safety equipment.

Have you seen the cable system? There are wood planks every so many steps to all for a grip. You are climbing a rock calf half dome mean round, it’s not meant to be a staircase. Many people use a carabiners safety equipment on the cables while others just rush on by.
The system was allowed to help non professionals climbers get to the top. The planks in the granite is not meant to be a staircase. They are traction points.
When I go to Yosemite someone always wants to climb HalfDome, so I have watched many online videos only showing viewers the setup so they can make an educated decision if it is for them. It is a long hike and scary so I did not do it.
My question if they knew rain was coming why didn’t use the extra safety equipment of the carabiner system? Hikers climbed inside the two cables, which makes me wonder if she was on the outside trying to pass on the outside section. If she was on the inside section she wasn’t using two hands and she didn’t use the carabiner system knowing rain could happen. Sounds like they were trying to rush around slower more cautious hikers in the rain.
I rather the close the cable system down than make it yahoo proof. The cable system is unattractive and damages the beauty of the dome.

It seemed like the perfect storm. She won the lotto slot to go that day, there was rain in the forecast, she had new hiking shoes on, it started to storm, the people in front of them were going too slow. It's sad she lost her life. She fell right in front of her father and he couldn't stop it. I'm sure he feels guilty about that. There is always a Risk involved in doing things like this. I can't remember the exact number of people who died there before her. They should have just not went knowing if it rained it would be very slippery.

the cable system was not at fault and is safe, she slipped off the mtn but the cable system was and is still in tact and she clearly just opted not to hold on to it at a point while up there... the cable system is only installed there for added safety to all those who climb 1/2 dome and if they decided to remove the cable system then others who accept the challenge to climb up there without it would be even more at risk of falling... truth is its quite a high point and theres always risks in height so the easier they make it to get up then there the more other people who will go up and potentially fall down over time ... and since they charge large fees to enter the area they will be more than happy to create any new type of lure including a different designs of cable assistance systems to draw more visitors.

Jonathan Rohloff said a ranger told them storms were in the forecast, and they did see clouds at times. But the sky was clear when they reached the cables, and atop the summit there were panoramic views - until thunder boomed.
Silly, Silly, Silly. They were warned and disobeyed!

I worked at Yosemite National Park 45 years ago. I went to the top of half dome three times. I almost slipped off the cables too & that was over four decades ago. It is hard to believe in all these years, with all the other changes Yosemite park has made to accommodate cars, traffic, shuttle busses & parking, they have never improved the cable system on the back of half dome. Shocking. So sorry for the heartbreaking loss of this father. May your spirit soar freely Grace. No more descending, only ascending from now on, to new heights, to paradise, to heaven. You are loved. 💔

You use caribeaners to clip on each section. You need 2 sets so you are never exposed to falling. You never climb this if rain is a remote possibility. Other people are a risk to falling on you which makes this hike dangerous. I am not sure I believe you worked there..

Omg some of you people are infuriating. This broken man lost his beautiful baby and you all are saying “well it’s their own fault” and “no one can have fun anymore because of people like them” and “maybe we should bubble wrap everything.” There is nothing wrong with the park being empathetic and making things safer. WTF. Tough crowd and guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I bet you wouldn’t say that to the family’s face.

As a friend of hers, yes. Some of these comments are so ignorant, the family is going through so much right now. She had so much going for her, but due to circumstances it happened. He’s not going to “sue a rock or Mother Nature”, he just wants a safer path so that way, people can still hike without dying. People are saying “oh there’s risks in everything” yes there is, but we have the ability to make sure those risks minimize.

Very sad what this father is going through. He witnessed his own daughter’s death and enduring one of the greatest pains in life. I don’t think he’s the type of person that wants to put bubble wrap around people or make half dome inaccessible. His daughter loved adventure.
From how I understood the story was that they hiked on a cloudy day and it started to rain on the descent. Chances are they weren’t the only ones up there. Sounds like a series of unfortunate events. The weather in that area can change quickly. Very tragic story and dad just wants something good to come from his profound loss. I don’t fault him for wanting that.
