Vivienne and I will be resuming our travels again next month! Super excited to get back out and shoot! Where’s your next destination and how are you preparing for it?
The next big trip for me is going to London, England. Right now, I'm setting aside money for the trip and waiting for Covid to claim down. Hopefully, I'll be able to visit next year with my friends!
so True Jason.. one of the worst mistake we have all made is "Not" including ourselves into our own pictures & I have learned my lesson. thanks for this great video..
I enjoy all of your videos, but I particularly enjoy the ones where you give advice. I feel like you're giving tips on photography, but really it's about keeping yourself happy while taking photographs. making sure to enjoy the process and not getting burnt out. Thank you for sharing advice based on personal experience. It has helped me more than you'll ever know.
I'm happy to hear that! I used to get so caught up with the technicality of images rather than how it made me feel. I attribute all of my best images to what it meant to me rather than the right settings. So I'm glad that's also translating into these videos :)
One of the natural side effects of being in street photo mode is that you are more aware of everything going on around you, which makes you and your gear safer. I never get so fixated on a subject that I don't pick up on other subjects or sketchy situations as they develop around me. With your head on a swivel you can stay out of other people's way and serve notice with quick eye contact and a nod that you are acknowledging people's presence around you. Normally it is just a social courtesy but can also ward off people looking for inattentive tourists. Not everyone is built for solo travel, but everyone should give it a shot to see if it is a good fit. Not only does it allow you to make fewer compromises, but you can change the itinerary in an instant. It gives me a extra tingle of adventure knowing its up to me (and a cell phone with a local sim card) to navigate through new territory. Not exactly Lewis and Clarke adventure level, but a lot of fun. 😅
Just came back from Puerto Rico. Until this trip, I'm not sure I would have agreed with you about the people aspect. But you're right, if it's dead then the usual vibe just kind of isnt there, instead replaced with melancholy
Jason, you’re an awesome dude! You two being so considerate of one another is not surprising at all. You are always smiling. My girl is the one pushing me to go the extra mile to get a shot or a time-lapse when we travel, because she knows I’m thinking about our experience together first and foremost (like you and Viv👍🏻).
This was so relatable and helpful! I definitely learnt the "take your chances" point the hard way. There was one time I was in Lake Tahoe and I wanted to photograph the sunset. There were soooo many clouds and it looked dreary so I left. By the time I got back to my hotel the sky was on fire with the brightest orange sunset!! I was so annoyed! Won't be doing that again! When it comes to your point about taking too long while other people are with you...I've solved that issue by solo travelling instead. Such a weight lifted knowing i don't have to rush because others are waiting for me!
Hey Jason! Seeing your video pops on my notifications and seeing your contents always put a smile on my face. Love your tips, especially the last few. My mum always goes like where are you in your shots and your advice immediately reminded me of my mum’s lecturing 😂 I be sure to do more of that in future! Please stay safe and onwards to more travels!
Day 1: leave your Cam behind, get out there and do some orientation. Shoot those HotSpots and Scenes with your Smartphone during the day. In the evening, dive into these pictures and plan them for your final shot. Daytime, Location, Position. Day 2: the 'Early Bird' day. Be there with sunrise, do your shooting and then enjoy the rest of the day. Day 3: All plans set for the sunset and night shots. Afterwards look thru your shots. Missed some or want to revisit? Then do it on .. Day 4: Check back on your favorite shots. Another light, another time, another perspective. Done.
I ONE HUNDRED percent can relate to the first point! I make travel videos too but sometime I catch myself focusing more on recording than actually enjoying so I end up putting the camera down. I am trying to really think about what my TH-cam video story is, shoot what I need to shoot and ENJOY myself! Love the content Jason, keep doing what you're doing.
Definitely needed to hear that last one! Going on my first photo/video trip in less than a month and was totally planning to only take footage of my travel partner who is far more picture worthy than me, ha! I'd regret having nothing to look back on with myself in it though, so I'll do my best to actually get in front of the camera at least a few times. :)
My limiting factor on travel photography is my wife, with comments like 'how many do you need to take, are finished yet, you have already photo that today, I am bored, I am hungry, I need a rnk, etc, etc !
I’ve learned to batch my photos schedule. During my last visit home in Alaska. I’ve shot during sunrise and sunset. So that it’s still a family vacation, rather than a photography trip. However, I’m going on a solo trip to Fairbanks, Alaska to do some Aurora chasing in October. My girlfriend doesn’t like the cold and my son wouldn’t like it either. Anyway, a lot of great tips Jason! Oh and Vivienne for the win on enjoying the cultures food.
Fuji always gets me with its clouds. Drove through traffic to the pagoda and it was nothing but clouds. I was already grumpy from traffic and drove back home. Check webcams and weather and the sky was perfectly clear. Should have waited.
very nice video my friend!! and I remember to always carry my tripod for the logical reasons (slow speed pictures) and also for I will be IN the picture!! I have being in Europe in some classical pleases and there is NO picture of me next to the Eifel tower...so now I do carry more but maybe just a gorilla pod and be ready!
Definitely appreciate the tips on time management for content vs enjoying the trip. This is something Iv still been trying to figure out with my girlfriend for when we go on trips 😅! Anyways, really enjoyed the video!
Great vid and great tips - doing some vacationing soon and will definitely refer to your thoughts! Quick question - what's the hot shoe phone mount/cabling you're using in the last tip? I've never thought about adding that to my gear! Does the camera snap sync up with the phone? Love the channel - thanks for all you share! ✌🏾
great tips! However, the idea of lugging gear makes me sad, so I LOVE the time blocking and using the best light of the day and use iPhone for the happy snaps in the middle of the day. What is the one lens you would not travel without....
Pack light. Pack small. Don't take all of yours gear. Accept imperfections of gear to create vacation memories. No one will pixel peeping your vacation pictures :-)
Beautiful photos 👍🏻 glad you enjoyed your stay in Korea! I know you brought crazy amount of gear. Were there any gear you ended up not using it or used gear just because you bought them a long way. Do you regret bringing any of the item or were they all worth and used to the fullest? I assume you are far from minimalist, how would you have packed differently as a minimalist! Maybe these questions answered on your next vudeo? Haha Thanks for sharing~~~
Great content as always, Jason! I like all the tips, especially #3! I see you had different cameras on had during this video. If you’re a person who wants to be ready to capture the moment, what cameras and lenses do you have ready on hand?
Balancing shooting and simply visiting during traveling can be hard to balance. This is more apparent when going to foreign countries where everything seems awesome.
i'm the same as you , i always take too much kit out with me as i never know quite what lens i'll need , i saw a utube video a while back , where a guy decided to use just ONE lens for a year , a 50mm , but i never know which lens to just take , if you had to take just 1 lens with you only , which would it be ? & why ? .
My camera is always on me and ready to go when we go out. My family knows that I’ll eventually catch up to them if I stop to take a pic or ten. Lately I’m getting better at including myself in pictures so my kids will know what I look like at all the stages of their lives lol However, people with all the pro set up do not necessarily take the best pic (gotta take our chances I guess 😆)
Yeah, i don't know how many times it happened to me, your tired and packing it all up, start walking towards the car, and bang. you see something really cool, where the light is perfect. You hate the idea of unpacking yr gear cos yr so tired so you go home. Later you will regret it, that you did not stop and pack up and take those shots.. that's life
For someone like us who like to take pic and shoot video. How do u balance it? For the same subject i would always take picture and video about it. I always take more time than i should.
Look up images of the places and get some ideas. You can always replicate the image you see on IG or Google but you can also figure out how you could do it differently. I always take the standard shots and then get creative by taking a different perspective of the same location. Also, the moment and time you're at the spot, there are other variables: obviously the season, the weather, & people so it's just finding and taking in different elements and working them into your shots. Hope this helps!
I'm heading to Japan late Aug 2023 for about 14 days. What do you suggest for the best lens/lenses to take? and what do you suggest to see? I will be using my Sony a7iv
You make a lot of good points! I have done some travel vlogs & photography for my Channel and it can be tough to balance your time especially with others on the trip haha
It is. The more people, the more complicated the schedule can be. I always let my group know that I have my own itinerary for photos/videos and will link up later for the important gatherings. And they are always more than welcome to join me on a sunrise or sunset adventure :)
This might be off topic, but for the landscape shots, what lens are good for those? I know wide angles are preferred but which ones precisely considering focus distance? You want something that can shoot something far away and still be able to preserve details right? So which lenses would you recommend? (I shoot on a Sony a7iii)
Sometimes traveller youtubers are using too much music. This is a good thing but i think they should talk more. Kind of storyteller traveller. This is the best in my opinion.
Love you, Jason Vong :D Hope one day, you will travel Da Nang - VietNam; I will become you volunteer tour guide :D hehe. Btw, did you have review the combo Eos Rp + Sigma 24-70 Art? I'm planning to buy it, but don't find any the review and the real sample images. Can you help do a review it. Many thanks
I don't shoot Canon as I'm sure you've noticed haha But I do have a video on the 24-70mm ART for sony!! I'd love to return to Vietnam soon! The last time I went was more than 20 years ago
@@JasonVong Many thanks. I’ve seen this review and also love this video review. I’m a Canon-lover, so I just wanna understand the real-life review about it. Hehe. However, with your experiences, Do you think this combo will be great?
How do you get paid for Travel Photography? haha or did I misunderstand? do you work in some other kind of photography? Haha I just came back from Venice and I took too many photos... So, yeah. I have to control myself.
I can’t believe Viviene is still your girlfriend. Why don’t you marry her already? You two look like a dynamite couple. All the best to both of you. PS, I love your videos.

How to be a Travel Vacation Photographer, Jason? I'm so interested. 😁
