Oh that crossed stitch is just what I've been looking for! I'm working on my first quilt after practicing and learning on smaller projects. I've been pondering how to quilt it and think this will be lovely. I'd not heard of Jen Kingwell before, thanks for introducing her to a new audiences!
My Great-Grandmother used to lap quilt and has done the cross-stitch method seen on here for one of her quilts. It’s an gorgeous, dad and easy method. I love that this is being shown on an tutorial as my grandmother is no longer here to show me these things and so I am trying to teach myself and it’s been a lot of hit and miss with the videos...people have their own way of doing things and some people aren’t very descriptive. Thank you die this helpful video. The quilt is gorgeous 🤩 the one in the background is beautiful too. 💜
I'm on my first lap quilt being hand quilted, and I LOVE these cross stitches for quilting! Thank you so much, there's a lot of goog information in this little tutorial! Love FQS!!
Seriously! I don’t know how this even popped up lol I never would watch something on hand quilting! I tried it ten years ago and thought it was for the birds, but this seems so doable !!!! I never thought to try NOT in a frame or with a large needle and just doing slightly larger stitches! I wouldn’t call this big stitch but doable stitch lolol yes!
Beautiful. I really love the little cross style shown in this tutorial. And it makes me want to try to do a kids quilt with these little quilting crosses. Thanks for this video enjoyed it.
How wonderful was her quilt . Thank you for sharing I think I’m to apply the tag gun technique and the cross stitch I’m excited I almost finish a top quilt so seen this video at the perfect time for me .
I'm so glad I found you! I keep looking for quilts and keep finding machine quilts and I learned how to do this for my grandmother but it's been years. I want to make a quilt the way she did so we are doing the running stitch or the crosses if I'm feeling a little less inclined to do this forever
Thanks so much for this video! I love how simple the explanation of hand quilting is. It is the first time in all the videos I've seen where cross stitched is mentioned
Thank you so much for this. I never hand quilted before but I was struggling with a lap quilt backing that I just could not get taut enough to machine quilt without puckering. When I saw the little cross stitch option in this video I knew that it would work well with my quilt pattern and design - and hand quilting is more forgiving so I don't have to worry about the puckering issue. It's going well. Thank you Jen!
Fantastic! I love how this looks, I can't find the right words to describe it, earthy, homespun, heirloom, bottom line it made me instantly feel like there was a spirit connected to the quilt vs a quilt totally done by machine. Which shocked me because I have always preferred the machine quilted look more. Thanks for showcasing this method and having this wonderful quilter on your show. I can't wait to give this a try.
I really want to try hand quilting now, Ive only ever done machine quilting but I think I might make a pillow or something for myself that's hand quilted. Would love to have a big hand quilted quilt for my bed but baby steps first I guess ;-)
Lovely video! I've recently taken up the technique with cross stitching, only I use fly stitches instead, so you get a little V. I plan to try cross stitches too. It's nice to see 12 wt demonstrated. I've been using perle #8, but wondering about the 12 wt as well.
Do you always start in the center of the quilt or does it matter where you start??? I am trying to teach myself how to do this. I have my quilt frame BUT still not quite sure on attaching my fabric's and batting, I know that backing fabric, batting and then the top. I have watched several tutorials but I have seen anything on how to center all the fabric.
Hi Barbara! I asked Jen for you and this is what she said, "I don't personally use spray baste for quilting but if you prefer this method of basting by all means go right ahead. Just spray lightly so as not to "clog" your needle." Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Love the little crosses. I have large quilt to hand quilt so I am going to use that method. Can you please tell me how thick the thread is that Jan used please? I quite like 'Jeans thread' for quilting by hand as it is quite thick so it shows up well. Is this thread similar? Thank you.
Elizabeth Cannon Hi Elizabeth - Jen is using Aurifil 12 weight thread. You can find out more information here on Aurifil's website: 149.210.145.82/products/cotton-12 Thanks for watching!

Brilliant tutorial!! Thanks so much - just starting to hand quilt my first quilt - will use the cross-stitch method looks really great!
Great tutorial, she makes it look so easy! I've been scared to try hand quilting but this tutorial makes me think I can do it. Thank you!
I like the idea of the tags for basting since as Jen stated, your needle won't get hung up in it. I have to try this.

Love the texture that the different thread gave that’s just what I’ve been looking to do. Glad I found this video. Love that “x” stitch she used!
That X stitch is awesome! I can't wait to start hand quilting!

I had my first ever hand quilting lesson from Jen last week, and she told me she had just shot this video with you, so I'm wrapt to have found it. :)

A fantastically helpful video from one of my favourite designers! Thank you!
I love to hand stitch ! It will be the small cross!
I really like the cross stitch method. I will try it out, look like a lot of fun
First of all that quilt is super beautiful!! Very useful video! Thanks!!
Thanks to both of you! Great demonstration. Really appreciate it.
Great tutorial!!!
Thank you, very interesting. 🌸
I love the little crosses and the whole hand quilting. Just beautiful and amazing:)
Thank you, very helpful.
I absolutely love this!
Love the yellow half square quilt. So cute! Will be making it soon:)
Thanks for another great video. I think I might try this!
Great video. What needle does Jen recommend and what type of batting?

I love the quilt on the table!! Is that pattern available anywhere? The link in the description doesn't work.
Hello Catherine! You could try ebay.
Before I saw this I assumed you HAVE to use a hoop! Thank you! I can start sooner!
Thanks for this great video. I had a question. Jen doesn't mention Spray Basting. Is that method not recommended for hand quilting?
Hi Barbara! I asked Jen for you and this is what she said, "I don't personally use spray baste for quilting but if you prefer this method of basting by all means go right ahead. Just spray lightly so as not to "clog" your needle." Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Fat Quarter Shop
Thanks so much for checking on that!
I love the half square triangle quilt. Do you all carry the pattern for it?
thank you a great help.
Amazing and wonderful!! Thanks so much :)

I love the little basting tacks! I see this is a year old - but Kimberley, it doesn't look like FQS carries it anymore. Is that correct?
Yes Sherry, we have sold out of the MicroStitch Tag Gun and currently it's not on our list to reorder. Sorry about that inconvenience.
Do you carry the Aurifil 12 weight in your shop. I looked for it a while ago and couldn't find it. Thanks!
Dc Rodriguez Currently we do not have 12 weight available, however, we will be stocking it in the very near future.
Do you have the pattern for the lively quilt on the wall behind you and Jen Kingwell? Thank you!!!
Hello Teri! That quilt is called Georgetown on my Mind by Jen Kingwell. We have since sold out of this pattern.
Ok thank you Kimberly! I appreciate the reply!
I’m amazed she isn’t using a thimble, or recommending one even if she doesn’t use one herself !
I love it. I will try it for sure. I just would like to know more about the tagging It is the first time I am seing it. where can I get it? Do you have it in the fat quarter shop?

Thank you!
How do you select a thread colour when hand piecing light and dark plain fabrics? Thank you
Hello Hilary! You match the lighter fabric or you can always lay a strand of thread on top of the fabrics and see what blends in best.
Thank you
Thank you so much :)
Where do I have to go to buy your micro stitch tagging gun???
Hello Claudette! Here is a link to the tagging gun: amzn.to/3gHm4ON
