"Art is never finished. only abandoned" - Leonardo Da Vinci. This helped me a lot with how I think about images now. The one thing I always struggle with is lighting a scene properly in Cinema 4D. It drives me insane, and easily what I spend the most time on. Thank you!

He and Marco bucci are truly doing gods work. They are actually putting out topics that artists want.
Proko was one of them but it seems he is too busy with managing his 'brand'
Ethan Becker is like a teacher to semi-professionals/ professionals, covering advanced topics.

I immediately thought of Marco Bucci when I started watching this video He recently did a very similar video to this one about rendering in layers. Marco talks about light in technical terms with shadow tones, halftones, ambient occlusion etc. A lot of theory which is great. This video carries much of the same info but in, what some might find, a more straightforward, practical, and accessible way. Both are good.

Gradient maps are great for blocking in color, but not getting a finished piece. It basically looks at your grayscale values and assigns colors to them based on what you select. It’s useful because you can make adjustments to your values if you want, you get your main colors into your piece super quick, and you can get hue variation in really easily (like shifting temperature cooler as you go into shadows). You don’t want to stop after the gradient map though, it affects your entire scene so going back on top with color layers to bring more contrast to your subjects is something almost mandatory.

I would highly recommend to anyone in digital or traditional mediums to play with actual light. Physically setting up different lights in actual environments creates learning experiences that will never be forgotten. An easy way to start is with small a maquette. If you try to re-create what you have in your head with actual lights, you will find out what is and isn't possible and therefore, what has to be enhanced with imagination. Plus by doing so, you won't be constantly glued to a computer screen.

  • @ny4nk0

    gradient map + layer mask!
you can get rich hue shifts and easily adjust the intensity of light/dark for different materials! i like to make a gradient map, then use a soft airbrush on the mask to gently apply it where i want it, rather than blocking in harsh edges. the neutral/uncolored zones will actually work to your advantage and make the image look more 'mature', in my opinion.

Hi Boro, I am quite intrested in what you do in this sky light color. Mainly in the way you painted the character, because I really want to know how to use the basic values, only using black and whites. Whereas the most interesting part for me, is how did you do the values in this painting. I am practicing with rererences like pictures, but I am also interested in color that are only in greys, not that white and not that black.
If you have any video with a similar content, this is the process I need to lear at this point.

On the topic of gradient maps - I usually put color mode gradient maps above my values and only define light and shadow colors with them (mid-ranges set to almost 100% white so they don't really affect anything). Every color you then paint over them in overlay/color mode automatically has the right light and shadow colors. It makes everything look much more precise, imo.

  • @suomar-art

Great video and I'm sure it's going to help a lot of artists! I'm glad to see you tackling the issue (I remember writing a lengthy comment on this subject under one of the Black Widow videos before and it is definitely a common and difficult thing to work with, I feel you there), but I feel like it could have used a few more rules to remember: The edges get sharper the closer to the light they are, and making them soft when necessary is going to help with the perspective, (for example in this case, with the foreshortened arm). It's also important not to forget to make the edge of the shadow the darkest part of the shadow, and to then add the reflections underneath. Yeah, you want to keep the reflections darker than anything in the light, but making them disappear entirely is going to kill some of the 3d shape.
Random thought: I have mixed feelings about using these cool Photoshop techniques to help with the lighting etc. I feel like using Photoshop to do the work for you might hinder the artist's own understanding of the fundamentals and what exactly is going on. Every decision in the painting should be carefully and consciously made, and imo doing it "with your own hand" makes it easier to learn, whether that's through pencil drawing, or digital painting, or anything else. It might help with the workload, but for studying it seems like an unnecessary shortcut to what the purpose of the piece is: learning.
All that being said, great video as always and looking forward to seeing how the painting progresses!

Insanely insightful video as always!! Thank you for doing these 🙏😁 btw, I’m a lot more focused on environment fundamentals than character, so my anatomy knowledge is not very on point, but I feel like one of the reasons your terminators are looking weird is because of anatomy? Like at least to me it seems really confusing from that angle, I can’t really figure out what’s happening in that shoulder region, where the trapezius begins and ends, where the deltoid begins and ends and where the biceps begins and ends, and how they insert into and come out of each other. To me it seems like your terminator is just a straight line going diagonally up to the right of the picture graphically, and doesn’t show much form. If the lighting is coming from above, wouldn’t the terminators in each form be mostly horizontal, so with the arm going up like that the forms would intersect and the terminator would look like a staircase almost? Also not sure you were already intending on that but the shadows seem too colorless to me, like there’s no sky color ir ambient light color, just sky light, as if the whole environment were completely pale. Please take this with a grain of salt, you’re a lot better than I am at this and I learned a lot from you haha maybe it’s just things that we see more easily from the outside. Maybe try and get some references of people in a similar pose and similar camera angle to figure that out. But maybe I’m completely wrong and you can disregard everything I said haha 😅

fun fact about sunlight ( I hope I get this right, I'm not a scientist):
The sun is really far away, but it's also really really big. Because it's surface area is so much wider than the earth, and all of that area is emitting light, the edges of shadows cast by sunlight get fuzzy as more light comes from further beside the object to dilute the shadow. It has something to do with the earth's penumbra, if you look that up you might get more information. This is also why the shadows of objects that are further away (for example, a big tower) will get fuzzier. If you walk up to a tower, at the base there will be a sharp edge but far away where the tip of the tower is casting a shadow, that shadow will be fuzzier. That's the best way I can explain it :P
This also happens with really thin objects, so wire fences and tree branches will not have defined edges in their shadows. I just noticed this going on a walk in a park and a friend sent a paper explaining it in more detail

Me, who does not have Photoshop and don't know how to paint like this:
"Yes, the terminator is fine. Maybe I should use more Color Dodge Layers as well."

i find it weird that i'm able to recreate my desired light effects on any 3D object but when i paint, everything has too much contrast. Maybe it's cuz in 3D, i have the software lighting my object automatically whereas i have to manually "create" the lighting effect...
