15:29 - "I don't think you could be a gay Nazi." You're both right - there were prominent Nazis who were gay. Ernst Rohm was, and Hitler eventually had him executed. But good catch by your mom - Captain K and Freddie, in the battle scene, are both wearing pink triangles on their uniform, which is how the Nazis denoted gay Concentration Camp prisoners. So it's a very subtle little confirmation that they were, indeed, a gay couple - and as gays were also persecuted by the Nazis, it's understandable why he'd cover for Elsa and Jojo when the Gestapo comes calling.
Ernst Rohm was also the only Atheist in the Nazi high command contrary to what Young Earth Creationists often claim and his obesity and irreligion were often a source of mockery amongst his superiors.
@@1993MovieMan Thats not true since Goebbles and Himmler where hard antichristians, among other Nazi commanders. Of course they never try anything since most Germany was christian AND the Fhurer knew it. Maybe you refer to the mystich belives of Nazis
Sad what happened to gay people or now LGBTQ community. I couldn't remember exactly but looked up and after the Nazis lost "Homosexual concentration camp prisoners were not acknowledged as victims of Nazi persecution in either post-war German state. Additionally, neither state contained a record of homosexual victims of the Holocaust.[6] Reparations and state pensions available to other groups were refused to gay men, who were still classified as criminals - the 1935 version of Paragraph 175 remained in force in West Germany until 1969 when the Bundestag voted to return to the pre-1935 version." "Holocaust survivors who were homosexual could be re-imprisoned for "repeat offences", and were kept on the modern lists of "sex offenders". Under the Allied Military Government of Germany, some homosexuals were forced to serve out their terms of imprisonment, regardless of the time spent in concentration camps." Freed but not totally... So yeah they hid that they were a couple because otherwise well they'd be in a camp. I think Sam's character hated what the Nazis were doing(burning the books, his speeches) , fighting then training for em, and especially their views and what was done to gay men like him(apparently much harsher then stuff done to Lesbians?)but bit his tongue and drank to ease it. But in the end showed what he was as he fought till his death
The three main groups targeted and killed by the Nazis were Jewish people, Romani (gypsy) people, and homosexuals. Many gay people were sent to the concentrations camps and murdered.

And, of course, I certainly don't like how people treat or ignore the poor. I just didn't like the family's dishonesty and decisions. I understand that the film wasn't taking sides on it, but I do think that the director was attempting to project a bit more sympathy for the family that I was willing to feel. Such a great movie. The shoes reveal gets me every time. The more I watch it, the more I love Captain K and Freddie; if I'm ever going out, I'm going out fabulously, like them.
Thanks for posting this! I'm glad that you both liked this movie. I think that some people disliked it because they didn't understand it. It isn't making light of the horrors of Nazi atrocities (as some critics suggested). In fact, I think that it is an intelligent way of showing the war through the mind of a 10-year-old who has been indoctrinated his entire life. "Adolf" isn't Jojo's "imaginary friend." Rather, he was more of his conscience -- a conscience that had been indoctrinated and coerced for his entire life. Yet, even that indoctrinated kid was able to see the evils of the Nazis. Remember: The German National Socialists (Nazis) obtained full power in 1933. By the end of the war in 1945, they had been in power for more than 12 years. Poor Jojo had grown up under their propaganda, coercion and indoctrination. Yet, by meeting a young Jewish girl hiding in the wall of his sister's room, he came to understand and see through the lies that he had been taught.
Captain K had obviously been reassigned from active duty after losing an eye. He is wearing the gold "Wound Badge". He also has a badge on his sleeve for destroying a tank with infantry weapons.
I just watched this last night because it's on HBO now. I wanted to see it before but something always got in the way. It's one of my favorite movies now.
Megan and Judy, you may want to watch a documentary from 2021 called "Final Account". It interviews people still alive from that era in Germany. It's interesting to see the different perspectives and what they knew of the Holocaust. It varied considerably. The German language teacher in my high school had been a pilot in the Luftwaffe (German Air Force). His parents were put in Buchanwald for not being sufficiently pro-Nazi. His mother survived the camp, but his father did not. He hated the Nazis, but he still did his duty. He knew his fate if he had deserted. Life under such a terrible regime affords ordinary people terrible choices.
Captain K and Frddie Finkel were in the German army, so not necessarily nazis. At the end Freddie had a pink triangle on his helmet which they nazis made gay men wear in concentration camps.
If someone told me that they made a comedy about Nazi Germany and not only is it funny but that it would be incredibly moving I wouldn't believe it and yet here we are. Came into the movie not knowing what to expect and I was blown away
The man who made this and Thor Ragnarok also made another movie called "Hunt for the Wilderpeople". CHECK IT OUT. Words cannot describe how good it actually is.
I thought this film was sublime. It mixed the comedy and drama perfectly. It wasn't what I expected at all. The best film I'd seen all year. What did you think about Taika Waititi's performance?
ir is interesting when you discuss who knew what about the concentration camps. there was extra ration (copious amounts) of alcohol sent for the troops in the concentration camps to help the guards cope with the horror of what they were doing. there was also a higher rate of suicide in those units than in any other unit in the nazi's expansive armies.
Captain K and his buddy wearing the ridiculous costume to go fight the Russians at the end, was symbolic of them finally being able to come out as who they really were. Captain K died liberated,. He was also Wehrmacht, not SS. Everyone in the SS was Nazi, but not everyone in the Wehrmacht was a Nazi, though many were. The Wehrmacht was the regular Army and the SS was a private Army created by Hitler, that was part of the Nazi political party.
They caught his mom and the officers knew and brought her bicycle home - and helped them - he knew they would come to check the house after they caught her

If it had only been one focus in on her shoes I probably wouldn't have predicted it happening even with the Gestapo showing up to their house. Still an absolutely awesome movie!
